or at some point this month?

And I know there is a EU board tucked away somewhere but I'm interested in everyone's views.

Just going back up on this thread (sorry I can't keep up!) the prediction that TM will try and replace the HRa with a Uk bill of rights is very possible indeed. May said, in a speech back when she was home sec, that she had issues with the human Rights. And newspapers have reported that a new U.K. Bill of rights would weaken the rights of citizens. It is a distinct possibility. That way, the Torries could ensure that the rights of EU citizens be not recognised in the same way that the HRA is recognising it. It would be a very dangerous thing to do, in my opinion, but hey, who needs a strong and internationally recognised Human Rights Act?

notangelinajolie · 14/03/2017 19:18

If the UK Gov does a deal with Brussels which gives citizens from other EU countries the right to live and work in the UK would they want to stay? Or has the damage been done and they are leaving anyway?

GreenPeppers · 14/03/2017 19:26

Now that is a good question.
I suspect that those eu citizens who have family ties will probably stay.
Other will go away.
I'm not even sure it will stop Pepe from the eu coming because there is very little talk about Brexit in Europe. That means people have no clue about eu citizens used as bargaining chips etc...

NameChanger22 · 14/03/2017 19:33

I feel worried and a bit trapped. I want to leave but I know how hard it can be to move and set up in another country. I've tried to before a couple of times but I was never able to make it work permanently.

Most British people will have nowhere to go if it is all goes to shit, which it most likely will.

Brexit voters are utterly delusional. I work with a few - they weren't nice people before June 2016 and they're even worse now.

WrongTrouser · 14/03/2017 19:34

Elements I have said several times on these threads that I would like to see the gov unilaterally guarantee the rights if EU nationals in the UK. I'm not saying that everything the gov does is perfect, far from it. Does that mean I can't criticise the EU if I think it is not doing what it should/could to make Brexit as smooth as possible for EU nationals in the UK? Is it somehow above criticism?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 14/03/2017 20:06

I doubt leavers gave EU citizens in UK much of a thought in the polling booth last June.

Lalelou · 14/03/2017 20:07

"We are living in fast-changing times and the EU just can't respond quickly and flexibly." Just as quickly or not as the British government. Policy making takes time, lots of time, years, sometimes decades, such is the nature of complex negotiations and contracts. Look how long it's taken May to trigger A50, nine months, not a fast train either.

I agree however that the EU could be better organised and governed as well as governing better but we are better off in the EU shaping it from the inside.

Stripyhoglets · 14/03/2017 20:09

Gutted and glad I have dual Irish nationality - as do the kids.

Should leavers have voted against what they saw as their own best interests because of the possible effects of Brexit on EU citizens? Should they have prioritised EU citizens over themselves, their families and communities? We don't usually expect people to vote completely altruistically. I find it odd that some suggest that is how leave voters people should have voted in the referendum. Did remainers vote altruistically or did they vote for what they thought was best for themselves, their families and communities?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 14/03/2017 20:28

Yes i did vote altruistically because i believe Brexit will damage the economy and thus people and communities. I do not want to see EU citizens here removed when they contribute positively to British life. Brexit has bred hate and xenophobia - cancers on society.

WrongTrouser · 14/03/2017 20:34

That is voting altruistically in the same way as someone voting leave is, if they voted leave because they believe being in the EU is damaging people and communities.

A true altruistic vote would be one where you vote to make yourself worse off (economically, socially, whatever) because you believe it will make others better off. I don't believe anyone does it, and I don't see it is reasonable to expect anyone to.

WrongTrouser · 14/03/2017 20:36

And I don't want to see EU citizens removed either.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 14/03/2017 20:39

The EU isn't damaging communities austerity is. A vote that threatens people with deportation is not a side of history i want to be on. Brexit is only altruistic if you enjoy making corporations richer.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 14/03/2017 20:41

It's abit late to be worrying about EU citizens here. Should have considered that in June. Tell Gisela Stuart your concerns.

Badders123 · 14/03/2017 20:42

Well said ghost!

I'm too fucking angry/tired/upset to post coherently atm

midsomermurderess · 14/03/2017 20:43

Sad, very sad.

LaurieMarlow · 14/03/2017 20:43

Wrongtrouser, quite why you thought Brexit would help your family and community in real terms is beyond me. Can you give us more details?

Badders123 · 14/03/2017 20:44

Coty factory in Northumberland closing - 800 jobs gone

GhostofFrankGrimes · 14/03/2017 20:49

Also pissed off with leavers dismissing people's concerns and fears. Everything leavers believed in has been exposed as lies and a sham.

WrongTrouser · 14/03/2017 20:57

Wrongtrouser, quite why you thought Brexit would help your family and community in real terms is beyond me. Can you give us more details?

I'm not going to rehearse my reasons for voting leave just so you can tell me they are beyond you, when you've already said they are beyond you before you know what they are Confused

Although I have mentioned some on this thread already, eg I want to live in a true democracy with open and transparent government which I can understand, engage with and try to influence. I don't believe the EU gives us that.

I also want our country to be able to respond quickly and flexibly to changing circumstances. With global warming and resource shortages, we are heading into very uncertain times. I want my children to live in a country which can take its own decisions about how to respond to these issues, democratically, as above. I don't think this will happen if we stay in the EU.
