Pantene - It's PAN-TEN surely? Not PAN-TEEN as per this glam old ad.

MaryMarigold Do the yanks also say 'erbivore' and 'ard of earing'

No we do not. Quite a few Americans do say 'erbs' instead of herbs though. I think that might be a carry over from the French fines herbes, after all a lot of the Southern US belonged to France at one point and its the third most spoken language in the US after English and Spanish.

Shouldn't it be Panteen because there is an 'e' on the end? If it was supposed to be Panten it would be spelled Panten not Pantene.

MongerTruffle · 14/03/2017 18:09

A1Sharon

I'm also a person who will say chorizo, croissant etc as they are meant to be pronounced.

seafoodeatit · 14/03/2017 18:12

Silly bong!? no that has to be a joke surely? I might casually throw it into conversation with DH this evening.

SuperFlyHigh · 14/03/2017 18:12

Drop I was brought up near to Nestles HQ in a big town in SE. We always called it (and I temped there), Ness-lay!

DieSchottin93 · 14/03/2017 18:23

Ooh people who call Primark Preemark really annoy me....you wouldn't say pree-mary school or pree-mates for example....hence why Primark is NOT pronounced Preemark Angry Grin

notaflyingmonkey · 14/03/2017 19:13

@superflyhigh me too. And I can't work out if we misprounounced it due to being from 'Ayes, or whether that was generally what it was called then?

ohidoliketobebesidethecoast · 14/03/2017 19:13

I think of it as ness-lay, but I'm sure when I was a kid they had an advert for milky bars, where they sang 'nessulls milky bar'. Maybe they got more French over the years :-D!

Mrsleighdelamare · 14/03/2017 19:27

Reiss - I thought it was pronounced Rice as in the German way, but now everyone pronounces it Rees.

SuperFlyHigh · 14/03/2017 19:28

notaflying 'Ayes, no "whispers" I'm originally from near Croydon. shudder!

SuperFlyHigh · 14/03/2017 19:29

It was always Ness-lay too, I think as a kid I may have used Nessells.

cherish123 · 14/03/2017 19:30

L'oocitaine is lock si tan but the people in the shop don't always pronounce it correctly.

cherish123 · 14/03/2017 19:31

Chorizo is chore ee tho.

Limer · 14/03/2017 19:33

Tob-lerone or Tobe-lerone?

I say Tob but most people say Tobe.

BabychamSocialist · 14/03/2017 19:35

Everybody knows it's not Primark, it's Primarché (OK, maybe that's just a joke we have...)

Don't even get me started on how to pronounce Dacia. I've always said "Dayceeah" but apparently it's "Datshuh" - urgh! What?!

BabychamSocialist · 14/03/2017 19:39

Oh and I still delight in making my American colleague say Leicester. 10 years and he still can't say it. No, it's not "Lie-cest-or" Grin

Watto1 · 14/03/2017 19:40

I was just about to dispute the Cillit Bang pronounciation but fortunately I read the whole thread first and realised Silly Bong was a joke! I was part of the team that brought Cillit Bang to the UK and we definitely pronounced it the way it is on the advert. It actually originated in Poland so we probably got it totally wrong Blush

Nomorechickens · 14/03/2017 20:09

In the south of Ireland the official pronunciation of Lidl is Lye-dl. That's SO WRONG! Because it would be spelt Leidl if that's how it was pronounced

treaclesoda · 14/03/2017 20:26

Ooh people who call Primark Preemark really annoy me

Well the TV adverts called it Pree-mark so I'm guessing thats what the company call themselves.

MDFalco · 14/03/2017 20:27

IAmNotAUserNumber
I always thought it was pronounced tortus, but what do I know?

trinity0097 · 14/03/2017 20:42

When I was a kid I used to think that VO5 was said 'voz thinking the 5 was a S!

Advicewouldbelovelyta · 14/03/2017 20:46

Now I shall get a glass of mo-wet and continue to enjoy this thread Smile
