Pantene - It's PAN-TEN surely? Not PAN-TEEN as per this glam old ad.

L'Occitane isn't a French word, it's Occitan (Langue d'Oc in French), a regional dialogue spoken in the Languedoc. So it's pronounced LOX-EE-TAHN, not how it would be in French.

I remember Nestlé being Nestle too!

PyongyangKipperbang · 13/03/2017 13:49

My grandma always called pizza Pitsa, and ever since the first time my mum came home with a different type of frozen peas and my dad didnt know how to say the name, they have been know a pet it poise!

Lartay grinds my gears too.

However.....I always get an irrational rage for people who make a huge fuss about pronouncing things correctly when there is no need. We all know that Chorizo isnt really pronounced Cho-ritz-oh but everyone does and its quicker at the deli counter than waiting behind some tit who insists on trying to sound Spanish when they come from South Derbyshire!

Oh and while I know that Chipotle is pronounced chip-oat-lay, it desont stop me wanting to say Chip-ottle when I see it written down, its one of those "takes two attempts" words like hyperbole and persephone! :o

PyongyangKipperbang · 13/03/2017 13:52

Do the people who say brock-o-lie buy it at a del-eye?

No because they dont sell brocoleye at the deleye, only salameye and pepperoneye.

How do people pronounce ASOS? I thought it stood for 'as seen on screen' so the 'A' should be pronounced like an 'a'. But I've heard people pronounce it like Asos??

MrsHughesCarson · 13/03/2017 14:01

My DH is French and says it is pronounced Lock-see-tann.

thepatchworkcat · 13/03/2017 14:23

Any thoughts on Kütchenhaus?!? Supposedly German kitchens but the German for kitchen is Küche! Kutche is coach or carriage as far as I know. Drives me mad when I see the ad. Willing to be corrected if someone knows it's a regional word or something but I suspect they've made it up!!

thepatchworkcat · 13/03/2017 14:24

Kutsche is coach that should say, with an s

IAmNotAUserNumber · 13/03/2017 14:32

The little plastic box divided into days to put your tablets in - is it a doce-ett box or a doss-it box?
I say it has to be doce-ett because it's measuring out doses. Others say differentlyConfused

IAmNotAUserNumber · 13/03/2017 14:32

And I hate lartay too!

ChuffMuffin · 13/03/2017 14:33

Adidas is very definitely Adi-Das as it's named after the founder, Adolf (Adi) Dassler. Not A-dee-das. Shit fact, Adolf Dassler's brother Rudolf founded a company called Ruda, which is now known as Puma :)

The CEX thing as SEX pisses me right off. It used to be Complete Entertainment Exchange, so it's C.E.X. I have no idea why they're trying to pronounce it as SEX other than to be edgy. Their advert makes me cringe.

MerryMarigold · 13/03/2017 14:39

Do the yanks also say 'erbivore' and 'ard of earing'

PageNowFoundFileUnderSpartacus · 13/03/2017 14:43

IAmNot I say dose-ett based on the same logic as you.

SherlockPotter · 13/03/2017 14:55

@Bluebell878275 I pronounce it ay-sos. I know some people pronounce it as ah-sos 🤔

SherlockPotter · 13/03/2017 14:57

@Bluebell878275 it did used to be known as As Seen on Screen but that got dropped a few years ago!

6demandingchildren · 13/03/2017 15:10

Huawei
People pronounce to as hoo-wah-wee
It's actually pronounced wah-way

K425 · 13/03/2017 15:10

Pantene - UK pronunciation currently Pan-ten. Since the range was developed in Switzerland I'll stick with that Smile.

L'Occitane - I work on similarity with other words with 'cc' in them. Success, occipital, accent, Carluccio are all pronounced 'ks' so I'll stick with L'Oksitane!

MerryMarigold · 13/03/2017 15:14

Car-looks-io? Confused??

Always thought it was 'chio'

Ilovetea33 · 13/03/2017 15:21

Kütchenhaus is definitely not a German word. Researching it on the web, I found this:
Kütchenhaus was established in 2004 at Trafford Retail Park, Manchester to allow homeowners in the North West to buy the highest quality German designer kitchens at the lowest possible price without sacrificing quality or service.
The German brand name seems to be Nobilia. So you're right, somebody made up the UK name.

VintagePerfumista · 13/03/2017 15:47

It's very definitely car-luch-io.

(think of it as the opposite rule to Chicco!)

I am going to buy Cillit Bang from now on just to be able to call it Silly Bong. I may even change my user name to it I love it so much!

amusedbush · 13/03/2017 15:50

Pree-Mark in Scotland

I'm Scottish and I only know one person who calls it pree-mark. I asked her if her kids go to "pree-mary school" and she accepted my logic Grin

elQuintoConyo · 13/03/2017 19:40

Sorry about the Silly Bong guys Blush

thepatchworkcat · 13/03/2017 21:26

Thank you ilovetea33! I knew it!

Carluccio is defo Car-loo-ch-io. It's Italian, L'Occitane is French.

BaggyCheeks · 13/03/2017 21:37

Primark is Pry-mark in this part of Scotland Grin

Anyone up for convincing people that lasagne is meant to rhyme with champagne? Or vice versa?

DropZoneOne · 13/03/2017 22:19

Where I grew up there was a Nestles factory, always smelt of soup rather than chocolate. Was referred to by everyone I knew as the "Nessles" factory. I was an adult before I heard it pronounced Ness-lay.

MrsCobain · 13/03/2017 23:35

Thumbwitches I am. Ds will NEVER say 'erb. Angry
