To make the boys share a cabin

MrsWatt · 12/03/2017 18:48

We have booked our holiday and have decided to go on a cruise around the med. I have booked two staterooms for our family of six and it is causing a lot of problems among my kids.

In the first cabin.
We have me and dh + DS(aged 4) and DS (aged 15). We booked a large room with a balcony since we all need the space,

The second cabin is going to be my stepson and my son both aged 17. I booked an interior since balconies were sold out and ocean view was only available on the lower decks and what I've read is that it can be very noisy. So me and dh upgraded the room to a luxury cabin. It isn't the biggest room but fine for two people to have enough space. The problem we have is that when i upgraded the room two singles became a double (i thought it would be a choice it wasn't).

My son doesn't want to share with Dss and instead wants to sleep on the sofa in our room. Aibu to think he is being a massive brat or should i let him. We have spent a lot on this holiday and changing arrangements at this point isn't an option ainu

Which cruise line OP?

marmiteloversunite · 12/03/2017 19:48

Would there be room for a blow up bed on the floor of the double? You can get double height ones now which are quite comfy.

donadumaurier · 12/03/2017 19:48

Sharing a bed with someone you're not comfortable with is a really, really horrible experience. I never sleep when I've shared beds with friends in this kind of situation. Please do not make them do it.

expatinscotland · 12/03/2017 19:49

Then contact the cruise line and see if the beds can be pushed apart.

'tbh I would rather my son sleep on sofa than not have dh with me.'

And you think your son is being precious?

Chloe84 · 12/03/2017 19:49

Yes, as pp said, ask steward if beds can be split. If not, as Hermione asked, would 15yo mind sharing bed with DSS?

Or would you be ok with your DH sharing with DSS?

So what if your stepson has no issue with it Mrs watt? Your son does.

You need to fix this.

Magicpaintbrush · 12/03/2017 19:52

There is no way I would make two 17 year old boys (nearly men) share a bed. They are at that age where something like this would be mortifyingly embarrassing.

callmeadoctor · 12/03/2017 19:53

Ah looks like you are ok with ages in cabins. Still think the easiest is for your DH to be with css or you share with youngest, easy peasy to sort. Can completely understand the 17 year olds not wanting to share. That would feel really wrong to me.

ButtercupChain · 12/03/2017 19:53

Another vote here for taking a sleeping bag or blow up bed. PLEASE don't expect your son to share the bed with his stepbro OP.

midcenturymodern · 12/03/2017 19:54

It's not being a massive brat not wanting to share a bed with someone who you don't want to share a bed with.

Could the dcs not have the big room and you and DH have the double, or the 15yo share with his dsb?

MrsWatt · 12/03/2017 19:54

It's a Norwegian cruise.

callmeadoctor · 12/03/2017 19:56

Which ship OP?

Moltenpink · 12/03/2017 19:57

Can the £1000 be given to you as cruise credit, to spend on food & drink?

Frustratedboarder · 12/03/2017 19:58

If DS has happily shared a tent-size floor space with DSS previously maybe it's the prospect of shared bedding that just seems too cosy, and if so why don't you suggest they both take sleeping bags and top and tail? Would definitely feel less like sharing a bed...

MrsWatt · 12/03/2017 19:58

I think I will share with ds (4) and dh and ds, ds and dss can have the balcony room.

Ring your travel agent, check on all the details. Is it a cruise travel agent? Normal agents aren't always up to speed with ship layouts and cabins. Alternatively ring the cruise line direct. I am sure it can be sorted. (Also the sofa in a balcony cabin will be TINY!!!!!!!!!) Believe me Grin A cruise is a FABULOUS holiday though, don't spoil it for the boys by making them sleep together PLEASE!!!!

Frustratedboarder · 12/03/2017 20:00

Could also throw in a roll mat or sleeping pad along with the sleeping bags and the boys could take it turns on the bed if even the idea of proximity was so abominable?! Grin

MrsWatt · 12/03/2017 20:01

Okay dilemma two my son doesn't want to be in same room as dss wants him and his brother in luxury cabin.

expatinscotland · 12/03/2017 20:01

'I think I will share with ds (4) and dh and ds'

That makes no sense at all. Why on Earth don't you contact them and see if the two beds can be pushed apart? Or if your 15-year-old will share the bed with his step brother or if your 15-year-old will share the bed with his brother and your SS stay in with you all.

callmeadoctor · 12/03/2017 20:02

Have a wonderful holiday. If you are with RCI, P and O or Princess, you will have THE BEST time Grin

ChippieBeanAndHorro · 12/03/2017 20:03

You and your DH obviously should take the double bed...

He is definitely not U.

YABVU.

What the fuck?!

He isn't spolied or a brat at all. He's ok with sleeping on the couch!!

MrsWatt · 12/03/2017 20:03

Oh I've suggested sleeping bags. He doesn't want to share a room with dss at all regardless of bedding.

Can't have him and brother as dss won't share with me and four year old.

Bit of a risk but if the cruise isn't sold out it's worth contacting the operator/TA in the month/weeks prior to departure to enquire about a change/ upgrade (can be surprisingly inexpensive). Others will likely be doing the same creating availability in each category of stateroom.

As a pp said Cruise Critic forums are a mine of information. They have forums for every operator and someone may even have info on your specific cabin Grin
They also have sections on every major cruise ship.

I googled a particular ship/cabin no. for a relative and found some insightful reviews!

expatinscotland · 12/03/2017 20:05

I'd not want to use a fucking sleeping bag or blow up bed on a cruise. Really not seeing hte big deal with your h sharing with his son if you won't contact the line and see if the beds can be pushed apart.
