I'm a nervous wreck right now Sad

Will it replace sex as a protected characteristic? Does that mean that women will have no legal protection at all?

I'm scared Sad.

Tumble did you read the link advising schools of that? & could you email them & tell them you pov on that? (If not asking too much)

Skooba · 10/03/2017 08:46

This bill has to go for more readings and then to The Lords.

Will everyone just say 'ohh, look what a kind inclusive society we are here in Britain' and nod it through?

Perhaps in 5-10 years time this bill could go through but right now it is too draconian and too soon. We need time to test out this stuff.
I can just see the DM headline next year 'Number of women on women rape offences sky rockets since new gender bill enacted'.
The response to that of course will be 'modern women are more aggressive and competitive due to enforcement of gender equality rights' - or some such mistaken explanation.

Bambambini · 10/03/2017 09:26

Well, it was passed in Ireland so not sure why so many folk think it couldn't happen here.

PageNowFoundFileUnderSpartacus · 10/03/2017 09:43

Wobbly You can set up a Facebook account with a fake name - or at least you certainly used to be able to - and as you need an email address to register it's best to set up a free webmail account that you don't use for anything else, and then there's no risk of accidentally importing your contacts or similar.

Facebook is different to Twitter though as generally only FB friends can see what you post (depending on your settings) so you won't be able to share anything to an audience without sending out some friend requests, which people are unlikely to accept if they don't know who you are. It would be useful for joining groups or following pages though (e.g. the Radfem Collective).

Thanks I will think about it. Not sure why I feel twitter is safer. If any of these fb groups head to twitter pls pm

I had to read that report twice, but I think they are saying that:

Biologically male prisoners, presenting female, in male prisons are at risk of rape and must be protected.
Biologically male prisoners, presenting female, in female prisons are threatening rape, but 'those concerns are not warranted'.

Eh?

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 10/03/2017 11:16

That story is horrific, Bev. Seems a transgender prison wing is what's required.

WankingMonkey · 10/03/2017 11:25

The answer to males raping males is to put males in to rape females and tell the females that their fears are unwarranted. Great. Not surprising though.

DJBaggySmalls · 10/03/2017 11:26

Why are US prisons so violent? Why is the rate of male on male rape so high? Its a known problem so why doesnt the prison system do something about it?

QuentinSummers · 10/03/2017 11:30

I'm annoyed that the spokey person for the lesbian group said ^Those concerns are frankly not warranted and they come from prejudices and biases from people who view transgender as not being fully human,”
Since when did not wanting to be stared at, not wanting to have sexually suggestive comments directed at you or have people expose their penis to you become a prejudice?

MeMyself1 · 10/03/2017 11:31

Caroline Flint was the ONLY MP to raise the question of women's (sex based) rights during the last debate on the Bill and now there's a thread asking MN to invote her here for a webchat - thought you might like to support the thread Wink and pass it on ...

thanks will have a look at it. (and save it!)

They have done something about it.
Now the males rape women, as God intended, so problem solved.

That is patriarchy.

WobblyLegs5 · 10/03/2017 11:33

Quentin she hasn't met magalena burns then.

Most lesbians groups, along with intersex groups, have been highly opposed to TRA's

BetsyM00 · 10/03/2017 11:36

Bambambini

I didn't know Ireland had already legislated for gender self-identification. Google says the law came into force in Sept 2015 - what have the effects been since then?

QuentinSummers · 10/03/2017 11:37

Hmmmmm. I'm not sure most lesbian groups are opposed to TRAs. Most lesbians I know are the same as other women, with an added sympathy to trans people because they've shared the "coming out" pain, so they stick their fingers in their ears and go "La La La can't hear you!" At any mention of cotton ceiling/the more extreme TRA agenda.

WobblyLegs5 · 10/03/2017 11:43

Maybe not most, but alot from what I can see. They seem to have caught onto this sooner than us, the constantly treats if rape from TRA's probably did it.

And, are there any TRA's who arn't exteeme? Those who are trans who support female rights (but obviously stand up against trans discrimination) are the likes of Yardley et al who stand with us, only more vocally and publicly

CharlottaBronte · 10/03/2017 11:46

Miranda Yardley gets constant abuse on twitter from other transwomen. Not aware of any other vocal transwomen who support female rights.

kua · 10/03/2017 11:57

@streetvoiceuk is another transwoman who gets it and is very vocal on Twitter.

CharlottaBronte · 10/03/2017 12:01

thanks kua

Skooba · 10/03/2017 13:25

The thing to do is to write/email your MP or Ms Miller stating your views.
Debating here is not going to change things.

Most radical feminists I know over the internet are lesbians, and I know plenty hetero libfems who are fully supportive of transwacktivism.

I would assume the lesbians who support transwacktivism are not member of lesbian groups but of LGBT groups.

Skooba · 10/03/2017 13:43

In Ireland www.thejournal.ie/trans-people-ireland-2655496-Mar2016/
That states 113 people are legally trangender in Ireland. Out of a pop of approx 5 million that is, I think, 0.00226 percent of the pop.

300,000-500,000 are estimated for UK. That is 0.666 percent approx, 300 times more than in Ireland.
