I'm a nervous wreck right now Sad

Will it replace sex as a protected characteristic? Does that mean that women will have no legal protection at all?

I'm scared Sad.

Given the tiny number of trans-people in this country, wouldnt one extra solitary unisex toilet be the solution? It's rarely going to get used anyway.

From what I have seen, the people pushing the agenda would find that transphobic. A transwoman is a woman and therefore must be allowed to use the specific female facilities. To suggest that they use a unisex facility, where female facilities are available, is to suggest that they are not women.

Given the tiny number of trans people in the country, is it worth spending money on something that's not going to get used?

There are not many trans people in this country.
BUT - this bill does change that.

OP thanks for highlighting. I can't believe I have seen no coverage. I have written to my MP. There is a petition against the bill at www.citizengo.org

GirlScout72 · 09/03/2017 12:22

it's really really really not about where people pee. I agree as a political and social priority toilets really are not an issue even worth prioritising (but given they are, that tells you how powerful this lobby is). Toilets are the trojan horse of all this.

it's single sex spaces, and sex as a protected characteristic - women's RIGHTS. That's got nothing to do with being anti trans, but anti gender self identification (ie really bad law) and being PRO women.

What we are seeing in the States and to some extent here is

Women losing their jobs for objecting
Women only organisations losing funding
Parents LOSING CUSTODY OF THEIR KIDS for not affirming chosen gender ID
Schools, work places, sports clubs, colleges etc changing policies that impact on women's advancement or opportunites (e.g. Title IX in the USA)

THAT's what we need to focus on. Gender ID is NOT LAW, sex is protected, there is a massive clash of rights, and personally I feel the only way we are going to sort it out is in court.

I'd also like some legal clarification on free speech

amispartacus · 09/03/2017 12:30

Isnt that for transgender people to decide

A toilet / bathroom where someone could get changed / shower / use the toilet without fear of assault or having someone look at them when they are in a vulnerable position.

Datun · 09/03/2017 12:31

I can't remember if this link has been posted previously. If you haven't read it, please do. It's guidelines to schools. They are explaining to adolescents that lesbians are people who are attracted to women - not to the same sex as they do with other explanations. They also use the words 'attracted to', not 'sexually attracted to'.

This is so a man/boy identifying as a woman/girl will fit the description 'woman', not 'same sex'.

So a young lesbian will have to consider her sexual orientation as not being attracted to the same sex, but being attracted to a 'woman', despite the presence of male genitalia.

And these are suggestions from Stonewall! Set up for LGBT people.

There is a very dodgy agenda going on here.

JapabSharted · 09/03/2017 12:33

amispartacus, you decide what your bathrooms get to look like and what the criteria are for who gets to use them.

As far as I can tell at the moment, you want bathrooms for people who ARE biologically female AND you want a privileged few people born male to be allowed access to them.

You don't seem to want unisex bathrooms.

You don't seem to want bathrooms where the only criteria is "I declare myself to be a woman"

So it seems you do want sex segregated places but an exemption for you to breach that sex segregation???

VestalVirgin · 09/03/2017 12:34

So a young lesbian will have to consider her sexual orientation as not being attracted to the same sex, but being attracted to a 'woman', despite the presence of male genitalia.

Or find another word to describe herself, because she knows that being attracted to "anyone who identifies as woman" does not describe her sexuality.

CharlottaBronte · 09/03/2017 12:36

Do look up hashtag cotton ceiling on twitter. Where, quite a few, transwomen, who I would say have an extreme agenda, explain why lesbians are transphobic for not wanting to have sex with transwomen who have male sexual organs intact, ie a penis.

I fully support and protect the rights of the transgender population to feel safe and accepted in society, to have access to good medical healthcare, etc. I do not accept their right to erase our biological sex socially and politically in this way.

I wondered if anyone knew if transwomen [men to women] can still be eligible for hereditary peerage, etc or whether they give up that right once they identify as female?

Datun · 09/03/2017 12:36

Or find another word to describe herself, because she knows that being attracted to "anyone who identifies as woman" does not describe her sexuality.

More redefinitions for women and girls because a handful of misogynistic men say so.

Elendon · 09/03/2017 12:44

Lesbian means you do not find someone with a penis sexually attractive. It means you find someone who has a biological sex determined at birth with which you are both happy with sexually attractive. Biological sex is the genitalia you are born with.

Everyone knows that Bruce Jenner, the male Olympic champion, is now identifying as a woman. And that her name now is Caitlyn. She has surgically enhanced breasts and her penis (a vestige from being born a male).

I wish I wanted to be female as much as trans women do.

SaltBae · 09/03/2017 12:47

Fucking hell the start of this thread could not possibly be any more pathetically dramatic. 🙄

Skooba · 09/03/2017 12:47

Yes this is the Crown Prosecution Service ........... so sad.

We are totally fucked.

Elendon · 09/03/2017 12:48

I have to use the pronouns otherwise I'm being triggering and abusive.

I just think we should all identify children as female at birth. If you wish to identify as male later in life then do so. All pronouns should be she.

But this wont work, because males can be aggressive and can impregnate women against their will. Pregnancy is a lovely time, but we mammals who give birth know the dangers involved.

Datun · 09/03/2017 12:49

bev

I'm with you there. I get so pissed off when people stay we're being hysterical, when the most chilling things are happening under our noses. It's like someone has put something in the fucking water.

I can only hope that the CPS didn't realise the nuances in the writing when they added their name to it. The deliberate, insidious, Machiavellian use of the language is just disgusting.

CharlottaBronte · 09/03/2017 12:50

where is that text from Diana ?

Elendon · 09/03/2017 12:51

Men hate their space being invaded. They like their male only spaces.
