I've been here for a looong time. I namechange regularly now after being quite spectacularly outed in rl.

Dh reckons I'm still very obvious despite name changes. As in, family and friends would recognise me and all the many MNers I know in real life will instantly know it's me.

So here's an experiment. This name is fairly fresh and I've only posted a bit. Do you recognise me? Should inbe much more circumspect? And is it a bad thing if I'm recognisable, really?

Posting pictures of your wallpaper isn't the best way to stay anonymous either.

I read on my phone and can't read names easily, so I don't bother trying.

Oh no one visits me so that's probably ok.

As I said, this is a throwaway name so if I am that obvious I'll name change and be more subtle.

Your post of 22.00 makes me think that maybe yes, I do know a previous name. Which is actually quite impressive given that I have the memory of a guppy. But I can certainly think of a lovely poster who was outed by family members. Was there a SIL from hell?

Maybe don't mention you use mumsnet to anyone? I've never mentioned to anyone other than DH in RL I use it. And even DH knows it only as the-website- we-do- not - name

I ignore poster names largely. I also try to take each post/comment/thread on it's own merits. If I spot 'a style' I try to ignore that too.

A couple of years ago I disagreed with a poster who was/is rather frequently referred to in almost reverential terms, and the sharp intake of MN breath was almost palpable.

But it was only those specific facts, rather than a posting style, IYSWIM, that made me remember. If you don't share the facts then you're fine, I reckon.

My sil has joined this week and recognised me straight away by my username! Every post I'm on I'm looking for her now, she has given me a slight clue but still can't find her the COW Hiya E if you're on this!

Sorry that sounded really stalkers, I recognise you, not in a bad way, you just post in a similar style no matter the name change :)

I think I know but that's based on the details you've given rather than the style of your writing. I've been posting since 2009 but not prolifically and have NCd a few times, so if I'm right you're quite identifiable in terms of content.

It's the style of posts, the phraseology, the odd quirks of grammar and sometimes the repeated misspelling of a word that makes some posters recognisable. Even if they post under different names.

Your 'ex' story is familiar, however, due to fact I have a memory like a sieve these days, I can't think who that belongs to 😂 No show whatsoever of knowing who anyone is if they name change.

As to whether you should care or not, that's up to you. I prefer people IRL not to know this is me because I post all kinds of very personal stuff & school gate mates in particular do not need to know about my showering habits/sex preferences/previous partners etc. Family need know nothing.

I wouldn't have a clue. I recognise a few names from a long standing chat thread I'm on buried in the MN basement and a few prolific posters who don't name change like AF but mostly I don't pay attention to names. I'm fairly sure I'm recognisable very easily but I've stopped giving a shit. I don't post anything here I wouldn't say to someone's face so meh whatever.
