CNN - full transcript.

I've only skim-read it so far but anyone who thinks DT wrote that script or that that's his "real" tone is batshit. The only bit that sounds like him is "bad ones".

CussingQuim · 01/03/2017 07:00

Ah sorry for x-post, started writing then went back to read pain Smile

Anyone else just feel sort of tired at the weird feeling of inevitability of it all?

Roussette · 01/03/2017 07:17

Yes Cussing totally agree. I still feel the same but it is quite exhausting that he just ploughs on. As a headline said today "Almost every big claim he made in his Joint Address today was false". And yet he's the one banging on about fake news. He creates it.

  • No, you werent the one to reduce the price of the F35 jet
  • No, immigrants do not cost billions of $ a year
  • 94million out of work is a false figure because it includes retirees, those not looking for work, students, mums at home, etc
  • No, the vast majority of terrorist related incidents are not individuals from other countries, they are US citizens
Lweji · 01/03/2017 08:09

@Out2pasture

I actually like the speech

What do you like about it?

I started watching it and decided that it wasn't worth staying up for it.

It was still the same speech as ever, only in a slightly better suit and tie, and with better words and complete sentences. Every single statement I hear was a lie and the promises as vacant as usual.
The only interesting part was trying to figure out what Pence and Ryan were thinking behind him. Pence looked bemused at times and Ryan swallowed at times. They had the same rehearsed smirk throughout.

I was only happy for Melania. I hope she's feeling more comfortable in her role. Despite wearing all black. :)

So, I'm relying on you in case there were any shockers.

CussingQuim · 01/03/2017 08:23

It's not (as his speeches go) a terrible one (although I don't like the content and think it contains some whoppers). But bits of it are very nicely written, clearly by a professional, so hats off to them.

And I guess at least some waffly bullshit about a failing newspaper won't go straight into the records.

Part of me wonders why he doesn't rely on that all the time. Another part of me thinks it makes him/his team more sinister. At least so far they've been bluntly stupid and open with their desires.

BiglyBadgers · 01/03/2017 08:24

Let's give the guy some credit. He managed to stick to an actual script, with complete sentences and real words in, for the first time ever. We should all pat him on the back and tell him what a clever boy he is Hmm

Roussette · 01/03/2017 08:32

I wonder why he doesn't do that all the time too, but let's be glad he doesn't. We need the unconscious stream of bullshit to know where we are.

The two behind him looked ridiculous in their matching ties with their stupid expressions. I had this unbelievable urge to keep thinking about a punch in the gob for the both of them.

Megatherium · 01/03/2017 08:34

The Radio 4 report was fairly positive about the speech. It sounds as if someone managed to get through to him that he really has to make the effort to start sounding a bit presidential rather than ranting and raving, and then sending out furious tweets when everyone points out that he rants and raves. Though he did sound much more within his personal comfort zone when he started on about the ridiculous wall, you get the feeling that that's about the only part that he actually understood.

I also noticed the radio 4 coverage this morning was quite positive. It was more about the presentation than the content though and seemed to be mostly saying that it was a success because it wasn't a complete raging screw up. It rather shows how low standards have sunk when a speech is given rave reviews because he managed to tell lies in complete sentences.

Donald Trump ended his first address to Congress by signing autographs
Donald Trump has completed his first ever speech to Congress as President. And almost every major claim made in it appeared to be false.

He appeared to wrongly claim that he was responsible for a vast reduction in the price of the F-35 jet, as well as falsely characterising a report into the problems of immigration.

The President's speech made contested claims about the value of immigration, his success in office, his plans for tax reform, and healthcare coverage.

While much of the speech was focused on the same rhetoric that Mr Trump led his campaign with – including a commitment to bring jobs back to the US and boost the military – he also made a number of factual claims about his work as president.

The controversial orders Donald Trump has already issued
10
show all
Here are some of those false claims in full, as fact checked by the Associated Press.

———

TRUMP: "According to the National Academy of Sciences, our current immigration system costs America's taxpayers many billions of dollars a year."

THE FACTS: That's not exactly what that report says. It says immigrants "contribute to government finances by paying taxes and add expenditures by consuming public services."

The report found that while first-generation immigrants are more expensive to governments than their native-born counterparts, primarily at the state and local level, immigrants' children "are among the strongest economic and fiscal contributors in the population."

The report found that the "long-run fiscal impact" of immigrants and their children would probably be seen as more positive "if their role in sustaining labor force growth and contributing to innovation and entrepreneurial activity were taken into account."

———

TRUMP: "We've saved taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars by bringing down the price" of the F-35 jet fighter.

THE FACTS: The cost savings he persists in bragging about were secured in full or large part before he became president.

The head of the Air Force program announced significant price reductions in the contract for the Lockheed F-35 fighter jet Dec. 19 — after Trump had tweeted about the cost but weeks before he met the company's CEO about it.

Pentagon managers took action even before the election to save money on the contract. Richard Aboulafia, an analyst with the aerospace consulting firm Teal Group, said there is no evidence of any additional cost savings as a result of Trump's actions.

———

TRUMP: "We will provide massive tax relief for the middle class."

THE FACTS: Trump has provided little detail on how this would happen. Independent analyses of his campaign's tax proposals found that most of the benefits would flow to the wealthiest families. The richest 1 percent would see an average tax cut of nearly $215,000 a year, while the middle one-fifth of the population would get a cut of just $1,010, according to the Tax Policy Center, a joint project by the Brookings Institution and Urban Institute.

———

"TRUMP: "Ninety-four million Americans are out of the labor force."

THE FACTS: That's true, but for the vast majority of them, it's because they choose to be.

That 94 million figure includes everyone aged 16 and older who doesn't have a job and isn't looking for one. So it includes retirees, parents who are staying home to raise children, and high school and college students who are studying rather than working."

I do wonder if he intends to force these people into work, or if he understands what unemployment is.

From what my Dbro has just told me - busy morning so he's been telling me the highlights - still no real clarity on how he's going to do it? Off to read the transcript now - thanks for posting it.

Dumdedumdedum · 01/03/2017 09:17

Digressing - there's a trending thread on MN now which I keep thinking is about Trump as I mistake the 'H' for 'He' : "H stepped the f*ckery up to another..."

I can't bear to watch or listen to Trump, I turn off immediately. I'm not sure I can face reading that transcript, either, so thank you, Lweji, for that abbreviated fact checked version!

originalbiglymavis · 01/03/2017 09:22

There are never any facts! No strategy, no tactics, no facts!

Its like talking to a four year old who is adamant that they are going to sprout wings and fly. They won't tell you how, but oh yes, it's gonna happen (and be a big beautiful thing).

Well, he's lowered everyone's expectations so that anything not totally insane brings a sigh of relief. In one sentence he tied together jobs being outsourced to other countries to the collapsing infrastructure. No connection whatever. The infrastructure is crumbling because the USA has a low tax economy, and he's promising an even lower tax economy.
But his scriptwriters are obviously working overtime.

MsHooliesCardigan · 01/03/2017 10:05

I agree that it shows how low the bar is when a speech is deemed to be good because it contained complete sentences and didn't derail into a rant about journalists and fake news.

Congress hasn't done anything yet to cross Trump, so he is treating them with respect. Wait until they've voted down a few of his proposals and I suspect that State of the Union addresses will become far more testy.

Destinysdaughter · 01/03/2017 12:05

I haven't been on this thread for a while as I needed a break from it but coming back has made me Angry

After reading the post about all the lies in his speech ( and how Radio 4 was positive about it), it makes me want to start a petition demanding that the BBC, ITV, C4 news etc, stops reporting on him so impartially and fact checks and challenges the things he says, which are blatant lies.

What do pp think?
