I agree - people who go on such a course are more than likely aware of the issues.

I know what 'othering' is. I can go into full details about 'othering' and how to demonise a group, to make them 'other'. I can explain how othering can lead to radicalisation and increase attacks on 'other'.

How the hell do you explain this to people who do 'othering'? How do you get them to see the consequences?

People are being 'othered' right now. Once you create 'other', then awful things can happen to 'other'.

peaceout · 27/02/2017 12:24

"asked the question which groups are oppressed in British society, I got the answer 'white men'*

Presume that for them oppressed group means people who don't get the respect and deference that we think they should automatically get?

On the subject of the different approaches used by the republicans and the conservatives to dismantling the public sector this is an interesting example of how the Tory government works. Whereas Trump is being very open a about putting in people who will actively dismantle the EPS, etc May does lots of small things that slowly chip away. This example of changes to tax rules meaning agency workers employed by the public sector will have to pay more tax does not effect the private sector. They will result in public sector organisations such as local councils and the NHS who employee a lot of agency carers and such like having to pay more just to keep pay the same and not lose staff to the private sector.

This alongside the minimum income threshold for immigrants that is placed at more than a nurses pay will have a huge impact on the ability of the NHS and public sector to recruit staff. It will drive up costs and result in them struggling to maintain services. However, it is complicated and hard for people to digest the impact of changes like these if they don't have experience of the public sector and glaze over at the mention of tax rates. In this way it is easy for the government to put through a death by a thousand cuts without anyone really catching on until it is too late.

Here is the tax article from the guardian www.theguardian.com/society/2017/feb/27/tax-changes-uk-public-sector-workers-salary-exodus-nhs

Thanks for the West Wing link ami there are just too many good moments! I do love that episode, and the one that follows. The way the President and Josh get one over on "Mr Speaker" is just perfect!

DFRlab - uncovering the media botnet - twitter bots generating revenue out of trump support.

Pausing thanks for copying that well-articulated piece on Hate speech and 'othering'. As we discussed when the pro-Trump troll was on the scene a few threads back, words matter. Always have, always will.

If Trump's hardcore fan base is 'disappointed', it's because it's been 30 days and there are still 'brown' people in the US, that wall ain't finished, those 'good jobs' (i.e.those 6 figure salaries they're expecting) haven't materialized, everyone on the street isn't totin' a sidearm, the wimmin aren't back in the kitchen making sammiches, and they're beginning to realize they may just lose their health care. But they will go to their graves (or the poorhouse) believing it's 'just around the corner'. I think the more 'reasonable' of them are realizing it's a case of 'be careful what you wish for....you may just get it'.

(oh sorry - I wasn't very clear - it doesn't show the actual video, but it does talk about it)

Deejoda · 27/02/2017 15:16

Across if in 30 days, they are disappointed, imagine how much worse they'll feel in a year's time when the mid terms come around. No matter how hard scrotus tries, he cannot keep too many of his promises especially getting rid of all immigrants/non-white people from America or bringing back obsolete jobs like coal mining. So either way, this is positive news for all sane people opposing the current administration.

Just seen a CNN tweet quoting -

""Nobody knew that health care could be so complicated," President Trump remarks during meeting with US governors"

AngryAngryAngry

Lweji · 27/02/2017 16:18

"Nobody knew that health care could be so complicated"

I tend to read his sentences as the opposite.

So, "Only I didn't know that health care could be so complicated."

Or was that a CNN lie?

nicenewdusters · 27/02/2017 16:21

Natsku that link in your post today at 08:41:15 is so interesting. That's exactly why this thread is so valuable. I would probably never have learnt about that otherwise, and can now look out on Tuesday to see if it gets any press coverage.

Destiny love the picture of Hillary's "win". The whole Best Picture mix-up could be a metaphor for Trump winning over Clinton. "There's been a mistake"....."No, I'm not joking". If only indeed.

CussingQuim · 27/02/2017 16:22

Not just CNN - Bloomberg and others have picked it up.

The Hill - "I have to tell you, it's an unbelievably complex subject," Trump said after a meeting with conservative governors at the White House. "

I have to admit that this made me swear out loud in my work corridor where I was checking my phone, and come right here. The TOSSER.

Lweji · 27/02/2017 16:24

Trump remarks at the Governors Ball:

"I want to just congratulate the First Lady on having done a really beautiful job. The room, they say, has never looked better, but who knows. I’m sure it’s looked very good many times. So, Melania, congratulations."

Now, seriously, everything with him is the best ever. In this case, maybe, maybe not? He's he putting Melania down?

"So I can say that after four weeks they were a lot of fun but we’ve accomplished almost everything we’ve started out to accomplish."

Such as?
But, no, mostly promises and promises.

SafariSoGood · 27/02/2017 16:26

Wow Cussing it's a bit bloody late now!

A man who has spent his whole life getting exactly what he want or buying his way out of situations is perhaps FINALLY realising how complicated the real world is.

Lweji · 27/02/2017 16:30

It was kind of clear he had no idea when during the campaign his "proposal" for lowering prices was to remove state border limits for health insurers. Basically, free competition was supposed to make it all better. Obviously a silly simplistic view. More fools those who bought it.

So what's he done today? I've need glued to my work computer do the world has passed me by. I'm assuming due to lack of balloons and marching bands that he is still in charge?

BiglyBadgers · 27/02/2017 16:44

He has realised that health care is complicated Mavis. Cue spontaneous breakouts of slow hand clapping across the world.

merrymouse · 27/02/2017 17:02

"Nobody knew that health care could be so complicated"

How can people hear that sentence come out of his mouth and still think that he is capable of being president?

Is he trying to lull people into a false sense of security by just pretending to be stupid?
