This is about London so no comments on how crap and expensive it is from non Londoners.

Aibu to get annoyed when people describe places that aren't London as London?
Sidcup and Bromley are in Kent!
Croydon is in Surrey!
Stratford is Essex!

Living in these areas is suburban. It's not living in London is very different it's suburban living.

Yes the tube map is huge just because it's on the tube doesn't make it London the metropolitan line goes to something like zone 6 I think it's further away than Brighton is the other way.

People who live in Bromley pay their council tax to london borough of bromley (and portion to the GLA) not to kent county council - why do such idiots think they live in kent?

sparechange · 24/02/2017 16:56

I've never eaten in Hobbycraft before. Is their food nice?

(They specify 'Greater London'! Which is clearly the greater bit around actual London!)

RagingSquirrel · 24/02/2017 16:58

sparechange that neck of the woods, yes.

LBOCS2 · 24/02/2017 16:58

I live in Croydon and don't feel like it's really London, having grown up in z2, and neither does DH (also a born Cockney FWIW). But by any official measure it is considered to be part of London. It's a London borough, I have an 020 telephone number, I voted in the mayoral elections, I pay the London bit of my council tax, I use my Oyster card to get around on red buses and when my car got nicked it was the Met that turned up.

conserveisposhforjam · 24/02/2017 17:02

Croydon is so fucking up and coming I think it may have up and come. ..

conserveisposhforjam · 24/02/2017 17:02

Ditto tooting

LBOCS2 · 24/02/2017 17:02

Ah yes sparechange. Shroedinger's Greenwich, both in Greater London and zone 2 at the same time Wink

You really have to knit your own lentils there Wink

Lilyargin · 24/02/2017 17:13

Stratford is not Essex. It's zone 2 and postcode E15. What are you on about?

m0therofdragons · 24/02/2017 17:17

I live in the south west and interviewed a lady a few weeks ago who was "relocating from London." My family live in Surrey and greater London borough and I know London well so asked where abouts. Her reply? "Reading" Grin

SoupDragon · 24/02/2017 17:21

Oh, do only restaurants govern what is London and what isn't?

(They specify 'Greater London'! Which is clearly the greater bit around actual London!)

No they don't, they specify London.

Zizzi, on the other hand, do specify Greater London in which they include Covent Garden. Canary Wharf, Paddington, Marylebone, Notting Hill Gate, Tottenham Court Road.... so I'm not sure what your point was there.

Phoebesgift · 24/02/2017 17:23

I live on the border of Plumstead and have a SE postcode. Literally 2 streets away it changes to Welling in Bexley. The house prices significantly drop in price when the postcode changes to DA.

Phoebesgift · 24/02/2017 17:25

I also bought my first flat in Stratford. It really feels like "proper" London. Used to take me 20 minutes to get to St Pauls tube station.

OneLumpOrSeven · 24/02/2017 17:26

Ditto tooting

Tooting erm...upped and came a long time ago. When no one could afford to live in Balham. Same with Streatham.

LBOCS2 · 24/02/2017 17:31

And Croydon still has a way to go, despite the new Boxpark.

thewholeplacestinks · 24/02/2017 17:31

stratford IS in east london and not essex. i live in what might seem like essex but it is east london as i have a post code that starts with e18. stratford is even more east than me as closer to london on the central line so YABU

growinganotherhead · 24/02/2017 17:31

I live in Newcastle upon Tyne. Waaaay up north. Where Manchester (3 hrs by car), Liverpool (3 hrs 15 min), Leeds (2 hrs), Lancashire (2 hrs 30 min) and Sheffield (2 hrs 30 min) also claim to be. Now that is confusing. Grin

MalletsMallets · 24/02/2017 17:44

motherofdragons
Thats brilliant!!

I do think commutable to london is growing, i think it now covers a huge area.
Where before you would only really commute into london if you lived within the M25 now its a huge area

sparechange · 24/02/2017 17:45

Soup
Hobbycraft include Staines and Romford in their list of 'London' branches
I'm not sure you picked the best example there to back up your point...

But surely you can see a boundary of 'Greater London' is a much bigger one that just plain old 'London'?
In the same way that 'Greater Manchester' is much bigger than Manchester?

TurquoiseDress · 24/02/2017 17:48

Well Bromley is the 'London Borough of Bromley'- it is defined as part of Greater London.

For postal address I think most parts of it has Kent as part of it.

Bromley is most definitely part of London suburbia!

TurquoiseDress · 24/02/2017 17:50

To add- Kent makes me think of Tunbridge Wells and even down to places like Margate. They are most definitely Kent!
