Family Wedding and School term 😡

My parent is getting remarried, in the Lake District which is about 6-7 hours away from where we live in termtime it's not even a few weeks after a school holiday.

They are getting married on a school day so it's a two day round trip midweek! For this wedding and I will have to take my twins out of school year 8 for two days. I am objecting as I feel they should be in school, as the wedding could have been held in a school holiday at lest. It's two days AL for my husband and myself ( we don't get much), and need to save it for sick children and our family holiday.

I have said I will go by myself, as I cannot afford the fines and I think school is more important. AIBU? Family are angry about my choice but my husband supports me

Weddings are not generally counted as exceptional. If it's key that children attend then the wedding is expected to be arranged for weekend or school holidays.

Yeah just go on your own.

OP - I think you're upset because while they seem to expect you should be there, no consideration has been given to whether it might be convenient for you. A mid-week celebration with grandchildren in school, if it's that important to them, is pretty daft.

I agree with the other posters who've said this is probably bothering you for other reasons than the fact it's term time and far away.

We don't know the characters though so it's no good coming out with a patronising: "Try not to take it personally" blah, blah, blah. My parents are still togehter but I can imagine how it might sting a bit.

YANBU getting annoyed they're ANNOYED WITH YOU for not coming, if they didn't even bother to ask whether their was any obstacle to you attending, prior to booking.

I think that going alone is a great compromise.

They know it is a school day, and a work day - they presumably did not even check if you and DH and kids would be available/able to get leave on those days. So they took that chance with a mid week booking.

I personally would not go at all as I hate travel - especially to see people I had a strained relationship with, so well done on going despite that, no need to drag the kids along too. I agree with you also on the fact that school is school - the kids go unless it is absolutely necessary for them to be off. To me this is not one of those occasions. Good compromise.

Personally I wouldn't let the school/county rules dictate. You seem a sensible parent so must be able to gage what's best for your family

BeyondThePage · 27/02/2017 13:53

School/county rules are a very valid excuse that the OP can use to minimise flack for not taking them out, when she does not want to take them out.

Thank you all, I will not be taking them ( they are not bothered actually) and it's a complete faff x
