"I/DH/MIL have "a hobby" which takes a couple of hours/3 nights a week/the whole of April"

What ARE these hobbies? And why so mysterious?

When someone says 'my hobby', I get a detailed mental picture of them painstakingly doing a giant Technicolour needlepoint of Windsor Castle.

Rixera · 22/02/2017 23:00

Or this g.co/kgs/VjnFJf

clumsyduck · 22/02/2017 23:01

Having said that though it feels weird to say hobby I mean it is one but I feel like I'm 12 again saying it

BathshebaDarkstone · 22/02/2017 23:01

clumsy wtf hobby is "identifying"? Confused Are you the only person in the world who does it? I'm a member of the Tolkien Society. I don't think that's identifying. Grin

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 22/02/2017 23:02

I know loads of out and proud LARPers! Hard to miss anyway as they all have proper full length beards, not these short, manicured, feeble hipster beards.

Although, for the record, I don't LARP myself. Or Plush. Or Dog. I do walk my dog though...

ArriettyClock1 · 22/02/2017 23:03

It's the word 'hobby'. It's a bit puerile for an adult.

My dh is obsessed with cycling. We've never referred to it as his hobby though.

Honeybee79 · 22/02/2017 23:04

I go to dance classes about 4 times a week. DH cycles and plays guitar. He does 30 mins practice a day!

girlsyearapart · 22/02/2017 23:04

Winner I also go to the gym so I now have two hobbies Grin

BathshebaDarkstone · 22/02/2017 23:06

steff I know a furry! He's not very secretive about it though! Grin

clumsyduck · 22/02/2017 23:06

I won't say it ! Stop trying to make me !! Wink

It's not that strange but for example if it was skydiving ( it's not !!) and Iv also posted about other stuff I talk about in rl you could easily spot me if you knew me . Yea I'm paranoid Grin

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 22/02/2017 23:06

Saying what your hobbies are is as identifying as saying you have two blue eyes and symmetrical arms. (As long as they aren't the only body parts you have, that is)

Something about the word 'hobby' is just irritating. The whole 'doing my/his hobby' makes me cringe.

Why does 'while I was at netball/ while I was organising my new stamps' need to become ' while I was doing my hobby'?

Pinkponiesrock · 22/02/2017 23:08

Hobby is a really odd word, for some reason I can't apply it to sports!
In my weird mind hobbies are things like knitting, collecting things, doing family trees etc but not sports, they are, um, sports Confused I'm confusing myself here!

Yamadori · 22/02/2017 23:09

I'm puzzled. What's the difference between a hobby and a pastime?

BathshebaDarkstone · 22/02/2017 23:09

I used to LARP. That's where I got my NN from. Grin

tigerdriverII · 22/02/2017 23:10

naranciata

It's the misery of the hobbyless May to August I can't stand, especially in odd years with no Euros/world cup SadFootballGrin

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 22/02/2017 23:12

I'm puzzled. What's the difference between a hobby and a pastime?

And when does a hobby become an hobbsession?

Now that's a niche reference... Can niche references to old BBC dramatisations of children's novels be a hobby?

Rixera · 22/02/2017 23:12

I'm just jealous of the LARPers, all I have is tabletop gaming.

I do get the fear of being outed (I'm just not worried about it.) People who know me could immediately recognise me from details about myself, my family, and my crafting and roleplaying habits dropped across this site, and if they didn't already know some details about my MH and things it would feel quite on the spot to have them recognise all that without my controlling the flow of information.
I can see why people would want to stay on the safe side.

Farandole · 22/02/2017 23:13

I started a similar thread a couple of years ago. Turns out 'hobby' is short for 'playing video games on to for hours every night'.

QueenLaBeefah · 22/02/2017 23:14

I'm an arsehole for several hours a week. Can I just claim it is my hobby (instead of a personality defect)?

Rachel0Greep · 22/02/2017 23:15

Love it! Grin

Kikikaakaa · 22/02/2017 23:15

I go to gym or classes. Other hobby is getting pissed on wine

I suppose my BF has hobbies but they are sporting although he isn't always taking part and it isn't really competitive

girlsyearapart · 22/02/2017 23:15

Maybe you could do it with some needlepoint on your lap queen ?
Or some other disguise ..

LittleStripyBee · 22/02/2017 23:17

Well I'm learning tonight! Funnily enough I've dug out my cv tonight and actually thought having hobbies on is a bit wanky so need to look at what's the acceptable thing these days.

Rixera · 22/02/2017 23:18

I also love needlepoint, and cross stitch Blush

AuntMatilda · 22/02/2017 23:18

What classes as a hobby? I mean, I run. But not competitively or collectively I just grab the dog and head for the park 5 mornings a week.
I like drinking wine with friends. That isn't a hobby is it? That's a guilty pleasure.
I like researching crimes and interesting (to me) things on the net. Guilty pleasure/relaxation not a hobby.

I like baking cakes even though I'm not a fan of cake myself. ..

Er.. I'm really boring aren't I. .. :)
