"I/DH/MIL have "a hobby" which takes a couple of hours/3 nights a week/the whole of April"

What ARE these hobbies? And why so mysterious?

OP posts:
happilyahousewife · 23/02/2017 16:15

We spend hours with the kids watching rugby/ training/coaching rugby/doing things for the rugby club & we have horses, plus DD2 is very involved in the school band as well as rugby.

HereWeGoRound · 23/02/2017 17:08

Before having kids I sang in an amateur opera chorus, just once a year...so for a couple of months there were rehearsals several days a week. It was definitely a hobby. Now I sing in a choir once a week.

StealthPolarBear · 23/02/2017 17:14

I can only see a small photo- is that a teenage mutant ninja turtle? :o

Niskayuna · 23/02/2017 17:20

Foreign language class, occasional conversation club and language exchange associated with that.
Sport team, events a couple of times a year.
Martial arts.
Gym (everyone does that though.) PT sessions. Weightlifting coach.
Choir. Acapella group plus performances.
I took an art class once. Bit rubbish.
Took Japanese for a year.
Theatre for 10.

I agree maybe people think it's identifying and probably just use the word as a shorthand to prevent having to say "going to the gym" (but why?) or maybe, if we're using the example of the angry poster of the DH doing too much 'hobby', they're hoping not to identify the DH.

Rixera · 23/02/2017 17:43

I love warhammer!! I made a gaming table with scenery Blush my OH and I love painting together of an evening.
40k or fantasy though, that is the question...
And that cosplay is AMAZING!
I'm currently working on our outfits for a sci Fi con, looking forward to my toddler as a tiny Jedi :')

Westfox · 23/02/2017 17:46

Our hobbies revolve around our homestead so we keep bees. And tan leather and fur from the animals we hunt.

November was deer Season so we have 2 deer hides to turn into fur blankets

SmileEachDay · 23/02/2017 17:50

I had NO IDEA that hobbies were so wide ranging.

This thread was a bad idea.

Now if anyone says hobbies I STILL have no idea.

Rixera, DH does both. His table also had scenery haha. I'll admit I've painted a model or two. Ive known about his hobby for about 5 years (he hid it for the first 2 years we were together) and I still can't get over how expensive it is.

Rixera · 23/02/2017 18:25

He hid it? Bless!
I buy mine & OH's on ebay, much more reasonable, though takes some resolve not to go above set limits. Buying job lots or ones already very shoddily painted are the way to go.

WhatIsWrongWithMePlease · 23/02/2017 18:29

I know! He thought I'd judge him, poor thing. He uses eBay quite a bit too. Our she'd stinks of dettol because he soaks the badly painted ones so he can re do them.

Twattery I was very tempted to give Urbex a go a few years back...being a 35 year old, unfit Mother of two though I decided not to....mainly because of the fear of asbestos! Apparently it's common for young teens to go without any protective equipment etc but the pros wear breathing masks.

The ones I've met, spoken to and who have been speakers at camera club have all been the pros who do it properly and safely.
I think it's the ill prepared trespassers that give urbex a bad name - they're the ones who get caught out, put themselves and others into danger and cause all sorts of damage to old buildings. Near me recently there was a big fire (I think it took something like 11 fire engines to bring it under control) at a derelict asylum/hospital building and I heard these was caused by trespassers. I'm not sure whether they were photographers or not though.

I'd like to have a go but like you I really don't think I'm fit enough to be climbing up, in and over various crumbling structures - that's why the majority of my own photography is done in the comfort and safety of my dining room!

Gowgirl · 23/02/2017 18:37

Wow and I'm just mnetting watching dcs in the bath and fantasising about killing the various people that piss me off......
Wine!!!! That's a hobby right?????

LoveMyLittleSuperhero · 23/02/2017 19:29

WhatIsWrongWithMePlease he's taken me to games workshop more times than I can count, infact he took me in one on one of our first dates Blush feel kinda sorry for your dp hiding it, mine is older and loves it, nothing to be ashamed of! Grin
Rixera has to be 40k doesn't it? Wink

We're going to comicon in brum as joker (dp), Harley Quinn (dd 17 weeks atm), ivy (me), batman (younger brother), riddler (older brother). Not that we are at all weird awesome Grin

WhatIsWrongWithMePlease · 24/02/2017 07:32

If I go shopping on my own, DH will normally have me go into games workshop to get him something and (I know it's their job) I really hate the hard sell I get. He's made friends with the staff as he's in there so often Grin I was quite annoyed with him for hiding it. I did think it was a bit odd as I'd never heard of it before but I'd never have judged him for it.

WhatIsWrongWithMePlease · 24/02/2017 07:33

And I bet you all look brilliant dressed up together. Do you go all out?

PseudoBadger · 24/02/2017 07:37

My hobby is dogging. Training them, doing agility with them, walking them.

Beebeeeight · 24/02/2017 07:48

When someone says 'hobby' on mn I guess it's one of:

Football
Other sport
Car boot sales
Gym
PTA
Taking or teaching an evening class
Open Uni
Volunteering
Army reserves
Entering competitions
Writing
Gaming
Comics
Politics

MiladyThesaurus · 24/02/2017 07:58

Open university isn't a hobby. It costs a fortune per module these days (because the government are idiots) so people are unlikely to decide they fancy a bit of an ancient history course as a way to pass the time.

OneLumpOrSeven · 24/02/2017 08:05

The 'my DH spends 2 hours a day doing his hobby'.

There's just something irritating about it. Just say he's cycling (or whatever it is). You're hardly going to out yourself. 'He cycles? I know exactly who you are ha ha'! Hmm

A hobby to me is knitting.

ElspethFlashman · 24/02/2017 08:49

I know very little about Warhammer - I read a Caiphas Cane book once cos I heard he was a similar character to Flashman (see my username).

But I have to say the idea of painting wee models sounds very relaxing. I'm envious.

I really need a hobby. But I suspect it's really only possible if you have older kids and don't go to bed totally shattered at 9.30

Ev1lEdna · 24/02/2017 09:34

Doing sports is an activity. Jigsaws are a pastime. Family trees an interest as would be dogging. Making cards and knitting and other sucklike are crafting. I'm at a loss what would be defined as being a hobby though

Well thanks so much for your labelling - are these definitive? Maybe not.

The dictionary definition:
noun, plural hobbies.
1.
an activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation and not as a main occupation:
Her hobbies include stamp-collecting and woodcarving.

Eolian · 24/02/2017 10:24

What nonsense. A hobby is a pastime. An activity can be a pastime. Those are not all separate, rigid definitions at all. They are all just words for stuff you do in your spare time!

HicDraconis · 24/02/2017 10:35

We do karate - it's a family hobby. At least one or other of us trains daily and we all train together for 2-3h Saturday and 2h Sunday.

It's not a hobby though, it's a way of life :-)

2rebecca · 24/02/2017 10:37

For me anything you do in your spare time that you are interested in and do regularly and that isn't just an ordinary part of life like cooking dinner or vaccuuming is a hobby. Cycling, running, sewing, painting, playing chess are all hobbies. It's something you make time for in your life. Cooking can be a hobby if you enjoy putting on dinner parties or cake decorating. Just making an ordinary dinner isn't a hobby though, that's just life.

TaraCarter · 24/02/2017 10:42

You're hardly going to out yourself. 'He cycles? I know exactly who you are ha ha'!

Depends.
DH goes/I go running, not outing.
DH/I started off running alone and now he does/I do Parkrun, bit more specific
DH needs/I need to go out early on weekends because of volunteering at the running club/parkrun, at this point the penny might drop with any close work colleagues that it's you.

God, people are ridiculous parking. It isn't just outside schools, either. DH/I volunteer with a parkrun, and the carpark is mayhem with everyone trying to park as close to the entrance of the park as possible. Hmm You wouldn't think people were going there to keep fit. It drives me mad, everyone who heard you rant about this in RL recognises you.
