To be fascinated by "hobbies"

"I/DH/MIL have "a hobby" which takes a couple of hours/3 nights a week/the whole of April"

What ARE these hobbies? And why so mysterious?

This is a hobby. It's a small, cross-looking falcon and its scientific name is Falco subbuteo. 'Subbuteo' means 'Under buzzard', as it's smaller than a buzzard.

Subbuteo is also the name of a tabletop football game, and it was called that because its inventor wasn't allowed to trademark his first choice of name. Which was 'hobby'.

Taking bird and wildlife photos is one of my hobbies Grin

I sew. I knit. I crochet. I paint. I sketch. I people watch. I walk on the beach.

But I don't belong to any groups, so it isn't 'Thursday night is X night'. Although I do try and meet a friend once a week for stitch and bitch.

I like to take pictures, especially at cemeteries. I also knit. And read. But nothing that I dedicate a set amount of time to.

From now on when someone refuses to identify their hobby, I'm going to assume they're furries.

My hobby is drinking wine and watching box sets. But for some reason that doesn't count as a hobby.

It does if we make it a club. We could have a MN drinking wine and watching TV club that we must all attend for 2 hours every Wednesday night but never mention it in posts.

I think it is because they don't want to admit that their DH spends all day Saturday and Sunday train-spotting. Too humiliating so they stick with "hobby" instead.

To be fair I'm not really that arsed if someone works out who I am IRL so I wouldn't ever consider being secretive. I mean, I've just told you all I run and read and I'm the only person in the world who does both of those HmmGrin

I think going to the football is a hobby. Particularly if you're a season ticket holder because to get your money's worth you do have to properly commit to a lot of Saturday afternoons out the house.

And then if you go to away games as well, it's basically every weekend from August - May/June.
