Lending money with conditions

Dh has been made redundant (bloody brexit) & frantically searching for another job but its really difficult as his work is very specific. I work but low paid & we have a max mortgage that we can only afford with his salary. I also have two pre schoolers at home.

Dm has very kindly offered to tide us over if it comes to that, they are very well off & adore the grandkids & extremely generous with gifts for them etc

The only thing is she has insisted we stop shopping at Waitrose, Boden & our favourite shops basically she is a reverse snob (?) and doesnt miss an opportunity to tell me what a waste Waitrose is. I am very particular about food & what the kids eat. We dont have a freezer or microwave & i find it so much easier to shop fresh somewhere i trust. I spend approx £150 a week for the four of us.
We hardly drink & rarely buy clothes for dh & I but obviously the kids need new clothes regularly. She's basically said i don't want you to waste my money!

If husband now unemployed get mum buy him a spade and fork and dig up your garden no need Waitrose at all then.

sparechange · 22/02/2017 10:00

Waitrose don't actually produce the food! It would be impossible!

Actually they do! They have their own farm which produces a lot of stuff for them - fruit, vegetables, chickens, eggs
www.waitrose.com/content/waitrose/en/home/about_waitrose/our_company/leckford_estate.html

But it isn't organic so if you want organic stuff, it is still possibly coming from the same farms that supply all the other supermarkets

LurkingHusband · 22/02/2017 10:01

Nobody here died from eating at Aldi.

Actually, it's the reverse Grin.

100% of people who eat at Aldi will die.

One day.

Smile Thanks OP, i needed a laugh today. BillSykesDog simply fantastic.

I can't believe you shop in Waitrose tbh, shouldn't you be shopping daily at the local organic farmers market, you're really letting the side down.

I think you should stick to your guns 100% on this one. If you can't have your Boden and Waitrose, its much better to simply starve to death.

RusticMEGan · 22/02/2017 10:03

Yabu and the kind of comments you have made make me think you don't actually need your mums money. If you were my daughter and said i feel sick at the thought of discount food I would be ashamed.
Ps, lidl and aldi arent discount food, they sell the same food, just cheaper Hmm

p5oebe · 22/02/2017 10:05

A chicken is a chicken is a chicken, whether you buy it from Waitrose, Tesco or Aldi. It's a bloody chicken!

Its not though Confused most chickens are pumped full of water & god knows what crap

I don't make my own squash that's one reason i check labels just one example i meant. Thanks I will look into making my own pb.

I didnt know that about woodburners thanks ill have a read up.
Microwaves have been proven to cause cancer Shock

Never seen any good quality clothing second hand...

BlueStockingUK · 22/02/2017 10:06

Hilarious.. I think the OP is bored and taking the piss! Or, too self entitled to not see the wood(land) for the trees.
Either accept the money with the conditions, or don't.
You could still shop at Waitrose for less, swop the foie gras for pate and the Pruner caviar for the lumpfish. Try swapping the Tattinger vintage for the Landon when soaking with fresh peas.
How awful for you, I know, grin and bear it, you can do it dahling.🆘

Rollonbedtime7pm · 22/02/2017 10:06

Just right now I am wearing a lovely thick Primark sweatshirt that cost £5 and munching on good old SunPat peanut butter on white bread (of course Grin) - I hope i'll still be alive by sundown.

Honestly, my 7 year old talks like this, how mean I am because he can't have this or that.

You obviously have absolutely zero clue about the way some children are brought up - that is, facing genuine hardship and neglect. That is not the same as being fed by Aldi and wearing George. Confused

Miserylovescompany2 · 22/02/2017 10:06

I think your mother is being more than generous. £150 is a ridiculous amount to spend on food per week. Especially if its someone else's money!

Step down from your high horse.

p5oebe · 22/02/2017 10:07

Report me then, MNHQ will tell you im not a troll

OP posts:
sparechange · 22/02/2017 10:07

most chickens are pumped full of water & god knows what crap

They're not though, are they
Because there are pretty strict labeling requirements in the UK, as well as strict controls on the use of hormones (unlike in the US)

Plus, you mean you are spending £150 and not even buying organic? How is that even possible?

For someone who is preaching about palm oil and aspartame, you are pretty ignorant about food standards Hmm

krustykittens · 22/02/2017 10:08

If you are cooking from scratch you don't need to check labels. Fresh veg is fresh regardless of where it is from. If you eat meat and it to be ethically produced, you ain't going to get that reassurance from any supermarket, regardless of how posh it is - I suggest you start eating your own chickens. Ebay is great for second hand clothes and you can still shop for the brands you want. Don't want to eat palm oil? Then don't buy anything with palm oil in it. Simples. I cannot believe that someone who is facing the prospect of not being able to make their mortgage repayments is fighting for their rights to continue shopping at Boden.

p5oebe · 22/02/2017 10:09

I don't for one second believe that labelling standards are upheld anyone remember horse meat scandal?

Anyway off to work

Except at Waitrose, where they are all up to scratch?

You sound like really hard work, OP.
No wonder your mother is trying to make you see a bit of sense with the conditions attached to her lending

I'm sure the bailiffs will be very pleased they can have a cup of tea and a biscuit from Waitrose when they repossess your house

GrinGrin

krustykittens · 22/02/2017 10:11

I also want to add, I buy all our clothes on ebay and they are very goo quality. But then, I set my standards much higher than Boden when buying second hand.

Goondoit · 22/02/2017 10:12

Shop in aldi for meat you can get organic and even rspca approved meat! Or go to Morrisons for their 3 for £10 and stop being such hard work

MagicMoments22 · 22/02/2017 10:12

I should qualify that with - if you are going to blather on about the differences between food in supermarkets. You do not know where your food comes from unless you are there from farm to plate

Fishface77 · 22/02/2017 10:12

You need to leave hansel and gretel in the woods.
They will forage for themselves.

OllyBJolly · 22/02/2017 10:13

I work with several food producers. Many of the same producers supply both Waitrose and Aldi or Lidl. Aldi or Lidl treat their suppliers well and take a real interest in the provenance of the food. Tesco, Asda, Morrisons not so much.

The carrots will be well packaged and look nicer in Waitrose, but may well come from the same farm as those in Aldi. The people that sneeze over the bread in Waitrose may be posher than the schemies who sneeze in Lidl, but it's still flour, yeast and water.

You do need a reality check. £150 per week on a family of four is not sustainable with one low wage coming in and a heavy mortgage. You don't have to accept your parents' very generous offer, but you do need to cut back.

Birdsbeesandtrees · 22/02/2017 10:14

No one is this much of a snob with such a lack of self awareness. No one.

c3pu · 22/02/2017 10:14

So basically the overwhelming consensus is that YABU.

Will you adjust your attitude/shopping habits in the light of this, or cling on until somebody agrees with you?
