To park outside my neighbour's house and refuse to move?

We live on a busy road and as such parking spaces are always at a premium, but we usually take up the same spaces. Anyway when I got home earlier there was nowhere to park as someone had parked right outside my house.
I had to park about 4 houses down as it was the nearest space available.
About an hour later the person who lives in the house (who has never spoken to me before and I have lived here 5 years) knocked on my door and asked me to move my car, I refused as I had just washed my hair and was in my pyjamas.
He walked off calling me ridiculous.
AIBU or would you have moved your car ?

He's ridiculous. He needs to do what you had to do - park somewhere else. It's lovely to be able to park outside your own house but it's not a right on a public road.

However, even though YANBU this does not absolve you, OP, of the duty per MN parking thread law which states you must provide a diagram.

Probably not. Where did he want you to move it to? Was there now a space in front of your house? (Where the neighbour could park anyway) Or were you supposed to find another space somewhere else?
If they were about to unload a van full of heavy boxes I would but not just a general 'i like to be in front of my house' type thing.

Nope. They don't own the road. Did it occur to you to find the 'offending' driver parked outside your house and ask them to move their car? I'm figuring not because you know that would be unreasonable.

When he knocked there was space outside my house but as I was in my PJs I didn'tt want/couldnt be bothered.
Its not like it happens all the time.
My first thought were "Get a Life"

Unless it's a designated parking space then of course YANBU. I've lived on a road where we didn't have drives and it was a case of parking where there was a space.

He's ridiculous.

It IS majorly annoying but it is what it is and as long as he doesn't have a drop kerb/driveway he can't insist you move.
We have this issue around here all the time. People always park their vans/mini hgv trucks/minibuses/whatever contraption they've got next week. The thing that annoys me is I don't drive and because surrounding neighbours know this, they think me and NDN obviously will never need access to those two spaces.

They know I'm ill and sometimes an ambulance needs access to get to me but it doesn't stop the world and his dog from parking outside though (the last time they had to come they had to park across another houses driveway as there was no room and the man came out being abusive to the paramedics Shock ).

They know, and I know, that there's nothing I can do about it until I can afford to have a driveway installed as they are legally parked. Whoever was outside your house was legally parked and you were legally parked outside his house. If he wants exclusive rights to outside his house then he should invest in q driveway, like I'm saving up for Grin

YNBU. I wouldn't have moved either.

When the roadworks truck thing parks outside our house. The man with the fleet of bloody minibuses has to park across the road and few yards up to the left. I have witnessed him, on more than one occasion, go over to his parked safely car a few yards up to the left and drive it over to outside my house. Just because he can. I think it's just so he doesn't have to walk a few extra yards to his house on a morning.

Also OP. I would have said if you didnt need the space yourself to hire a skip for a week or two but im petty like that. Also OP. The Mumsnet golden rule is it's not officially a parking thread until there's an accompanying diagram Grin

Ugh no. You did the right thing. There's a woman on our road who knocks on doors and asks people to move so that she can park outside her house. Makes my blood boil. She once demanded my mum move her car at which point I headed over to her to suggest if she felt that strongly she should probably pay to get her kerb dropped. "I'm entitled to ask." was her response. Entitled indeed...

If he just parked outside your house, he'd have had to walk exactly the same distance as he did to ask you to move. Why did he even bother! Also weird that he knew it was your car.

I once reported a neighbour in a previous house to the police because I parked outside his house and he threatened to trash the car and come after me. I also complained to his workplace as his company name was on his work van and he exited that to shout at me.

Don't move it now on principle!

ooohHorlicks we have similar. We once got asked to move my Dads car from outside my house so 'Tracy' (not real name obviously) could still park there, outside my houss and get her car seats out okay. My Dad was living with us at the time as he was recovering from a heart attack. She'd asked the other offending driver parked outside her house and he'd told her to fuck off get over herself.

I wouldn't have moved it without a good reason , only because if I did it once, he'd feel like he could ask me anytime it happened.

Our neighbour asked me to move as I was blocking her light!! She said she didn't even park her own car there - parks outside next doors window instead!! Asked me to park across a huge green - 6 kids to load in car every day. Mm think not. Scowls every time I see her! Mad bint. .

Maybe there was a valid reason he wanted the space outside his house? Delivery, disabled visitor etc.

He must have been cross for a reason (which he failed to communicate).
