From what I've read, the average cost of a wedding is now £20,000-30,000! This can't be true surely? 😫

How much did your wedding cost? Any tips?

Thanks!

Getting married next April. Budget is £15k, not including wedding dress (which is my wedding gift from Mum!)
So far the venue, registrar and food and drinks are booked and it comes in at just over £8k- looks like we might be under budget!

champagneplanet · 21/02/2017 22:14

About £13k all in, no big honeymoon as DD was too young, just a night away for me and DH. Had 80 day guests, sit down meal with wine, extra 50 night guests with buffet.

Did the 'works' but shopped around. Auntie made my cake, did my own invitations, order of service, table plan, favours, as I enjoyed it. Didn't scrimp was just clever with the budget, eg: didn't pay £200 for a veil from wedding shop when I could get one for £20 on eBay Wink

About £1400, of which £600 was rings.

Dress and shoes - £150
Honeymoon - 2 nights in Bath £400
The rest went on drinks in the pub next to the registry office, and two meals in the restaurant next door. Had about 25 friends there - registry office (a beautiful one in a park) and everyone paid for their own meal in the restaurant.

Been married 18 years and have happy memories of the day.

My first one...about £8000 (it was 1994...)
My second.....less than a grand. First wedding was done for other people (exh family, mostly....).Second was done the way we wanted it and only invited those that mattered!
Second was a hundred times better than the first!

Babyroobs · 21/02/2017 22:19

In 1999, ours was £1000 on a tiny Fijian island ( we lived in new Zealand at the time). The £1000 included the honeymoon. It was cheap because no-one else was there.

£6k Inc honeymoon to Maldives send singapore, 1998.

Lesley1980 · 21/02/2017 22:20

I think the total in magazines usually include honeymoon, wedding rings & outfits for mothers, fathers etc. I remember getting married & looking at one of the list & everything was way our.

Our wedding was about £16,000. Hire of country house, 80 for meal, 100 at night, band, photographer, video & 20 people staying over.

LouBlue1507 · 21/02/2017 22:23

Thanks everyone! I can't believe the price of somethings! Such a huge range too!

About £30k including honeymoon in 2009
I am totally embarrassed by this now!
220 guests, church wedding, reception in a beautiful hotel.
If I knew then what I know now I never would have done it. We had an amazing day from start to finish but being a bit older and wiser and truly understanding the value of money, I really wish I hadn't!

Jenniferb21 · 21/02/2017 22:27

About £25-30k including the honeymoon 2 years ago. We have a big family had about 150 day guests and it was about £100 a head.

Tips are decide what's important to you and do a list of priorities. Then you'll understand what you could compromise on. So for me I was happy to see how I could save on flowers so asked advice and got 3-4 quotes, ended up using mainly gypsophelia and roses rather than all big flowers.

Also bought highstreet bridesmaid dresses (didn't match and loved it) I didn't have a block colour theme which made everything flexible. Photo attached.

Could've spent so much more I really shopped around and was happy to say 'if I order this week what's your best price?' Most suppliers will do you a deal!

Have a fabulous wedding! Xxxx

$55, not sure what the exchange rate was back then but that was the total cost of the license and paperwork. We were already on holiday in the US so decided to go and get married. We both just wore clothes that we'd taken with us, nothing special.

MommaGee · 21/02/2017 22:31

Married 4 years ago, 12k plus honeymoon. 70 day, 150 evening, church, canapés, 3 course lunch, buffet and evening disco.

eurochick · 21/02/2017 22:35

12k, 6 years ago

50 day guests and a few more in the evening. Lovely small stately home with significance for me. We spent money on the stuff that mattered to us - good food and booze - and skipped the stuff that didn't (bridesmaids, fancy ring, elaborate cake).

I'd guess we spent another 5 or 6k on the honeymoon, which was amazing (Borneo).

BadLad · 21/02/2017 22:37

Disappointingly few "we all shared a cup of warm wee and a Saintsbury's economy pie, so it was two quid and everybody said it was the best wedding they'd ever been to" posts on this thread.

Limitededition7inch · 21/02/2017 22:38

About 20k including honeymoon. Had 130 day guests with a further 50 at night, although did get married out of season. Saved on a few bits as talented and very lovely friends offered to design/bake/dress the room. Also had high street BM dresses and because my dress was last season they sold me the sample in the shop as they needed to get rid (it only needed a few alterations) for half price. But this enabled us to spend money on a band, a jazz singer for drinks and a shit ton of enough alcohol for our guests - all stuff which we felt was quite important.

We didn't spend on favours or anything like that. I've also been to weddings where there was a casino, or kids entertainment. We wanted good food, good music, good company and lots of wine, which is what we got. It's perfectly possible to get this for less, but also very possible to spend a lot more!

jennymac31 · 21/02/2017 22:40

Less than £10k for our wedding including honeymoon to Egypt (including nile cruise) 6 years ago. 100 day guests plus 50 evening guests. Caterers and decorators etc. Had an amazing day and honeymoon and was happy we kept to wedding budget of £10k.

icelollycraving · 21/02/2017 22:40

Around 20k. We had a destination wedding & paid for us & 7 family to come too,all expenses paid. Mum & stepdad felt they were too unwell to go just as we were about to pay the balance so would have been more. We saved it in less than a year. I miss having so much money, things changed financially but would love to take ds to see where mummy & daddy got married.

JaxingJump · 21/02/2017 22:41

£20k wedding. £10k honeymoon.

nomorehamplease · 21/02/2017 22:41

Mmmm an awful lot. About £80k I think not including the rings but I think inc the honeymoon. Blush

There was no warm wee, alas.

SanityAssassin · 21/02/2017 22:43

800 dollars plus 500 dollars for photos (exchange rate was great then too so really cheap 10 years ago). £150 for a dress and that about covers it! No guests, no cake. A lovely holiday after (which we would have had anyway)

SpiritedLondon · 21/02/2017 22:48

12k about 6 years ago not including the honeymoon ( another 5 or 6k) for about 50-60 guests in a hotel in Cornwall ( not local to any of us so a bit of weekend away too!) At least it wasn't Maui.

AllFurCoatNoKnickera · 21/02/2017 22:50

About 30k for a destination wedding but that included full board accommodation for 70 guests

BoopTheSnoot · 21/02/2017 22:51

Our small, intimate wedding got out of control as soon as our families got involved, and ended up being a big white affair that cost £24000 excluding honeymoon.
It was an amazing, wonderful day and I did end up loving every minute of it. But it's an awful lot of money- if we'd had to pay for all of it ourselves it wouldn't have been possible at all.
Ultimately we'd have had just as happy a marriage no matter what kind of wedding we had. It's horses for courses really.

skerrywind · 21/02/2017 22:56

£180. Total.
