When the new rules on tax credits / universal credit come in ie when no one can claim benefit be it top up or otherwise for any more than 2 children

Sadly I am helping a good friend cope who has just had an early abortion, she did not plan the pregnancy and one of the main reasons is she and her DH are low earners/ They already have 2 at school, and won't be able to afford to have this baby. She is devastated and has admitted they could have squeezed another DC in if it wasn't for the new rules. I think this will happen a lot. :(

In times gone by people would adopt out children that were unplanned that they couldn't afford and I really feel that this is what we are headed back to. Not adoption but, you get my drift

I also think the government fully know this and its one of the reasons they have brought it in. Simple population control Angry

Well I figured it out and spoke out because what they are doing is very very wrong. I was also concerned that her DP is controllering her, which he is, however you deal with that by leaving him, not going along with his fraudulent scheme.

The worst is that if caught it's her who has been paid the benefits so it's her who would be punished, not him.

Unless you have access to someone's bank statements you know nothing.

Also a general point of info
Housing benefit is not paid to those that have a mortgage. Some help may be given on mortgage interest.

Polly That is correct however they have him as the owner and her as the tenant who is the one claiming HB.

Lottie I didn't need access to her bank statements to figure out what was going on. She asked me for help with taxes with the changes with BTL. I was perplexed as to why she was asking me. It was her DP who needed the help and it totally exposed them. Accountants are required to report any tax avoidance scheme to the inland revenue. She was worried an accountant would report them for benefit fraud.

Quite frankly there should be a legal obligation for any professional (lawyer or accountant) to report any benefit fraud or tax avoidance plus tax evasion to the relevant authorities. Currently, only accountants are required to report tax avoidance/evasion so the wealthy hire lawyers to do the work for them, who are not subject to this rule.
