I work in education so I am off work at the moment - along with my 13 year old daughter as it's half-term.

We've already been out for the last few days and so we're having a lazy day today before going out tomorrow. Despite stocking up she fancied a sandwhich with the one filling I don't have and I fancied a walk - albeit a 5 minute one. The shop is literally a 5 minute walk from our cul-de-sac.

I didn't lock the door because a) you can't break wind in this road without everyone knowing b) both sets of neighbours are in and b) I worry about locking the door and there being a fire.

I was gone less then 15 minutes. When I came back my daughter shouted, as I came in 'is that you? Someone opened the door and came in'. When I looked the postman had left a parcel in my hallway.

I don't know what to think for a number of reasons.

He's a decent guy and we've chatted on several occasions. He's been on this route for years.

But also: when I'm in work his collegue leaves one of those awful cards where I have to go all the way to the sorting office. However, this postman always leaves parcels in my lean-to between the wheelie bins. Why on earth would today be any different? It's a quite close so why would he even try the door and not leave the parcel in the usual place?

Schwifty Tue 21-Feb-17 17:15:46"one of those awful cards" So you're not happy for him to come in, but leaving cards is awful? I'm confused.

Sorry to have confused your tiny mind. Did you read the whole post? Usually he leaves the parcel in the lean-to which is preferable to the awful card.

NavyandWhite Tue 21-Feb-17 17:21:24 I think you're on a wind up here OP.

Absolutely not. I've been a member of this site for many years - mostly lurking as work takes up too much of my time to post. Today with the Postman scenario it crossed my mind to ask for opinions on this site.

I don't understand the lock your front door thing. Our front door closes and you can't open it from the outside without a key, though you can open it from the inside no problem. You can "extra lock " it at night from the inside (or outside) if you want to but someone can't easily come in from the outside anyway without a key so during the day I would not usually do this or do it when I leave DS (12yrs old) at home for a few minutes

I have always had front doors like that. Obviously it can be a bit of a pain if you lock yourself out but on the whole I prefer to to the whole lock out possible intruders vs ease of getting out in a fire dilemma

Ouch! I'll be sure to grow my brain later. Just report him if you're that bothered! And I'm happy for you that you're living in a non door locking area, just maybe advise your 13 yo dd to lock the fucker when she's home alone.

bumblingbovine49 · 21/02/2017 17:32

Sorry - on the actual question . If it bothers you I would talk to the postman and just explain that your daughter got a fright so not to do it again, just leave in the lean to. I wouldn't spend any more time thinking about it than that but I might get a new front door (if I could afford it and it was my house)

An alternative is to get a chain for the inside that your daughter could use when you are out, though that has it own issues as well

strawberrisc · 21/02/2017 17:37

Schwifty - just maybe advise your 13 yo dd to lock the fucker when she's home alone.

Can you not use your words?

Navy I agree again. Nearly jumped at that last comment by OP before your post but stopped myself.
Bumbling, our doors have to be locked with key, assume OPs is the same, chain sounds an idea if a key is too hard for her 13 yr old.
OP you asked for opinions, you got opinions, you don't like opinions so you've been rude to people posting opinions. Job done?

Schwifty · 21/02/2017 17:40

strawberrisc

Ha! Autocorrect. Obviously I swear too much. lock the door

strawberrisc · 21/02/2017 17:43

Pigflewpast I genuinely welcome opinions. I don't think I've been rude to anyone despite being misquoted on several posts and having been likened to the McCanns.

You 'effed' at me. No need to be tentative now!

Pigflewpast · 21/02/2017 17:55

Ok we obviously have different opinions on what is rude as well as locking doors.

Schwifty · 21/02/2017 17:57

strawberrisc

I made a typo. You were already being rude. Please get over yourself.

strawberrisc · 21/02/2017 18:03

Schwifty just maybe advise your 13 yo dd to lock the fucker when she's home alone.

I will 'get over myself' when you point out the typo.

so, not going to answer my post then??

I repeat, I fail to see what your problem I unless you are accusing the postie of inappropriate behaviour

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia I did answer you at 17:20 - not that I was aware that it was a requirement of the thread to answer your post. This is a very strict post.

Turned out nice again Hmm

Op, I wouldn't be happy with my postie opening my door either, are you sure it was your regular one? He might not have known about the lean to arrangement?

What has that to do with the postman doing it? It wouldn't bother me overly but it does cross a boundary. No.pun intended.

Navy what if, what if, what if, if we all lived like that, none of us would cross the street, drive a car, or eat sausage (I choked on a bit of sausage when I was about 8)

BastardGoDarkly · 21/02/2017 18:29

Saying that, my kids are too young to leave alone yet, locked in or otherwise.
