To think some people just come on here to argue?

I swear some people just come on here to argue and make other parents feel like utter shit! Almost every post on here someone comes onto and finds a way of giving the OP some abuse.

I thought this site was to help each other and give advice. You know a support network.

I could literally write something like 'saw a cute kitty today' or 'had a banging cuppa' I bet someone would cause an argument! I wish some people would just get a grip! Bet it makes them feel really big hiding behind a keyboard!

To be fair bluntness the OP is moaning but not making anyone else feel like shit so not sure that is irony?

reup · 20/02/2017 22:26

Didn't the older sister (Mary?) in Little House on the Prairie go blind? She was very good too. I am basing this on the tv series - I think I only read the first book. I'm sure there's a thesis somewhere on female illness and goodness in late 19th/early 20th century American children's literature.

TheWinterOfOurDiscountTents · 20/02/2017 22:26

Why else would you be on AIBU?

Maudlinmaud · 20/02/2017 22:31

reup you are my type of pedant.
I loved the Pollyanna series and the movie. I may just order the books for dd. Mary did go blind, when I used twitter I had a tweet from the actress who played Laura. It made my year.

forfucksakenet · 20/02/2017 22:32

That sounds like a delightful read. If you find the name please post! Women are always ill or mad. When you mentioned that it made me think of the poor woman in The Yellow Wallpaper and also poor Bertha in 'Wide Sargasso Sea'!

forfucksakenet · 20/02/2017 22:34

And that is not an example of my aggressive sarcasm! I genuinely would love that book 📚

Applebite · 20/02/2017 22:34

I love Pollyanna and Laura. But not the tv series. Just the books!

I read that a trainee dr said confidently in her classes that scarlet fever makes you go blind, and her teacher said, er, no it doesn't. And she said, "but... it was in little house on the prairie!!!"

They now think Mary actually had meningitis, but Laura (or rose, depending on whom you believe wrote most of the books) thought scarlet fever was more likely to be understandable to readers!

Bluntness100 · 20/02/2017 22:34

Sorry op. Its The title of your thread, then following it up in the body with insulting posters, I think is an example of coming on to cause an argument, its passive aggressive, that's the irony. 🙄

By the way I sort of agree with uou I think s tiny minority kinda do, but not all the time, just sometimes a subject matter angers someone. I'm not sure if they come on just to argue as such, but the additional factor is if you're having a bad day you might get more annoyed that otherwise you would if you read something sensitive or that irritates or angers you.

GinIsIn · 20/02/2017 22:37

reup she did indeed go blind, but as she was a real person I'm not sure it would fit into a thesis on fiction?

DesolateWaist · 20/02/2017 22:40

I swear some people just come on here to argue and make other parents feel like utter shit!

I'm not a parent, waits for then question, can I argue anyway?

ilovesooty · 20/02/2017 22:41

I seem to remember we had a thread complaining about mean girls and veiled references to regular posters only a few days ago. I think those continued references are tiresome at best and shit stirring at worst.

Applebite · 20/02/2017 22:42

Fenella - I think it's more what you'd call faction, would that count? I'm reading this, it's fascinating to see what was kept in and what was taken out (dead brother, domestic violence, running away without paying rent etc):

paxillin · 20/02/2017 22:42

Goadyfuck away, DesolateWaist, would you like me to insult your non-parent status or should I be nasty about an old post I will find on AS to get a fight going Grin?

Applebite · 20/02/2017 22:42

This too (disclaimer, I don't work for amazon, other retailers are available!!):

GinIsIn · 20/02/2017 22:44

Applebite it's fascinating isn't it - I've read it too.

forfucksakenet · 20/02/2017 22:45

Can you link the thread?

measles64 · 20/02/2017 22:45

I think sometimes posters could be more tactful, some of the threads are made by people who are upset, going through something traumatic or just asking for constructive advice.

DesolateWaist · 20/02/2017 22:53

like me to insult your non-parent status

Ooooh I love it when I get asked to justify why I am here. Use that one please.

RachelRagged · 20/02/2017 22:54

I agree on the whole OP

Sometimes though, with the written (typed) word, its difficult to know how to take it sometimes .

Other posters are defintely the type who would start an argument in an empty room though . its usually those who are argumentative or harsh . (Again that is to do with how one sees it. Some think argumentative, others would think constructive criticism) .

mymilisbatshit · 20/02/2017 22:54

lol I'm dead!

OP posts:
reup · 20/02/2017 22:55

Sorry - I just meant I imagine there is a thesis somewhere, not that I've seen one! I remember seeing this one referenced once at university - we studied Wide Sargasso Sea.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Madwoman_in_the_Attic

I never knew Little house on the prairie was based on reality. I feel v stupid now.

I enjoyed My Antonia -set on a prairie - such a hard life. Just googling it I forgot she write others - I'll have to put it on my wish list.

Sorry OP for derailing part of your thread!

mymilisbatshit · 20/02/2017 22:57

Reup no problem you carry on Hun lol x

OP posts:
measles64 · 20/02/2017 22:59

I have been a mod on another forum, the more disagreeable members who argue that their comments were constructive criticism/difference of opinion when they had been reported many times by others does make me think that some people genuinely do not see how the written word can be construed.

forfucksakenet · 20/02/2017 23:03

Madwoman in the Attic is one of my favourites but actually doesn't focus so much on illness.

There must be ... that will be me googling away all night!

forfucksakenet · 20/02/2017 23:04

Yes sorry mili!
