To dare speak about Vaxxed on MN?

NC for this but a regular.

So I've just watched the documentary Vaxxed. I know how vaccine threads unfold on MN, so I'm ready to be told IABU however I feel like everyone should see this whatever your views - it's about the cover up around studies into autism and MMR

There is an admission from a CDC insider that he worked on the study and hid data which proved a link (a strong an quite frankly astounding one) and the data was sent to an external biologist who saw it for himself. There are first hand accounts from parents, scientists, doctors and politicians. The CDC haven't denied anything or called their lawyers despite it being an allegation of the biggest medical fraud ever (not exact words but something along those lines)

I just can't believe it's not been in the news! AIBU to ask if anyone else is planning to watch it??

Bumbly you can selectively quote what you will. Wakefield was struck off, not because the world (or in this case the BMA) were against him, but because his research was proven to be a)wrong and b) unethical.
He was paid to manufacture evidence against the MMR.
The children were referred by a circuitous route that involved a solicitor trying to do a class suing of the makers of the MMR vaccine and an MMR anti vax group.

isadoradancing123 · 20/02/2017 16:32

They denied that the whooping cough vaccine caused damage also, however in the end it was admitted and vaccine changed

I've always been curious about this debate.
Hasnt the MMR been out for over 30 years? Wouldn't that mean everyone will be autistic??
What age do you get the MMR? I'm trying to remember when my dc got it.

This shows a complete misunderstanding of science. One study cannot prove anything.

Watch Derren Brown flip 10 heads in a row. This does not prove that the coin has 2 heads. If you flip a coin enough times, you will get 10 heads in a row.

That's why we need large-scale studies with thousands of children over many years. And when you look at the big data picture, it's obvious that autism rates have increased even where vaccines are not given.

I remember the thalidomide causes abnormalities. And the polio of whooping cough, can't remember which one, causes brain damage at one point, I think when they was new out. But they was proven cases.

helpimitchy · 20/02/2017 16:37

I think we're entering an era of post rational thought where scientific research will be dismissed and crazy theories will be accepted without question Confused

The world seems to be becoming more religious, more paranoid, more superstitious and more stupid.

Oh, and more intolerant.

OurBlanche · 20/02/2017 16:37

They denied that the whooping cough vaccine caused damage also, however in the end it was admitted and vaccine changed But no one man stood to make millions by lying and abusing children in doing so. Wakefield, on the other hand did!

User1483300717 · 20/02/2017 16:39

Isadora- I remember that. Do you think it is the MMR also? Just wonder with it being out such a long time. I thought it would be save since its be out 30 years. Surly we would all be autistic? Very interested in thin.

Majority of scientists say vaccines are safe = proof that Big Pharma has its evil claws into everything & orders Big Govt around or fools everybody else.

A few people with scientific qualifications say vaccines are dangerous = Heroes of the People, truth seekers, fighting Big Pharma.

I mean... why? Why is it easier to believe the majority are fools or heartless, than to believe in a minority who are fools, quacks & dishonest?

I dunno. I think most educated people are half sensible & only a few are stooges. It's a world that makes more sense.

I won't watch the film because my blood pressure can't take it.

Dawndonnaagain · 20/02/2017 16:43

Isadora it was changed because the evidence started to stack up. In this case it absolutely hasn't.

Peppapogstillonaloop · 20/02/2017 16:43

Brilliant isn't it! I love the doctors on the video.. my husband was egging me on to post it on a local mums anti vax thread that I'd gotten embroiled in..didn't quite dare!

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/02/2017 16:44

I said, the CDC have not stepped forward and said they are false or even commented on the film

Arguing with idiots just means there's two.

UndersecretaryofWhimsy · 20/02/2017 16:45

the documentary very very clearly calls out for widespread availability of a single measles vaccine.

Which is a bad idea, which will cause death and disability, whatever rhetoric about 'parents' choice' you put on it. The NHS rightly will not support this, because the scientific case for it is non-existent and the scientific case for harm is substantial.

TeenAndTween · 20/02/2017 16:46

Surely we would all be autistic?

No. A medicine or vaccine can increase the chance of something happening without making it certain it will happen.

e.g. If usual rate of heart attack is 1 in 1000 in the course of a year, then taking pill A may double the chance/risk to 1 in 500. So not everyone has a heart attack who takes pill A, but double the number still have one.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 20/02/2017 16:47

Is that the vanity project directed and staring Andrew Wakefield?

specialsubject · 20/02/2017 16:49

to answer the actual question, YANBU to 'dare to discuss'. The MN 'waah! don't like you! Shut down the discussion' is the playground attitude that is so prevalent on this site.

YABU to believe conspiracy theories and Andrew Wakefield - if you do.

and no-one, certainly not 'scientists' says vaccines are safe, life isn't safe and we all die. What vaccines are is (grammar?) generally less risky than chancing the disease they usually prevent or reduce.

OurBlanche · 20/02/2017 16:49

Yup!!

OurBlanche · 20/02/2017 16:51

That's true special and the answer is no, YANBU because, yes, you do dare. Because, all in all, there is a discussion happening!

KatharinaRosalie · 20/02/2017 16:51

A few people with scientific qualifications say vaccines are dangerous = Heroes of the People, truth seekers, fighting Big Pharma. -

People saying vaccines are dangerous and Big Pharma is only trying to make money, while at the same time selling 'vaccine detoxes' and other unproven, potentially dangerous snake oils - just in it for the goodness of their hearts.

OurBlanche · 20/02/2017 16:54

What would we have without Big Pharma?

Given the costs, that no government is willing or able to carry, the 'evil' that is business must commodify medicines in order to carry out the research.

Oh yes, those same snake oil sellers would have to step up.

User1483300717 · 20/02/2017 16:55

Ourblanch- wouldn't that mean everyone who's had MMR would be autistic? :/
