To ask if at 5'4 and nine and half stone I would be considered slim

Worried61 · 18/02/2017 18:47

Mil commented today that I'm in her words quite a high weight for my height. She is around the same height and over a stone lighter. I think I'm a good weight and that 5'4 is slim and not overweight at all. Am I in denial?

OP posts:
StarUtopia · 18/02/2017 20:07

I would say you're slim.

When i'm that weight (still battling with losing baby weight) - I'm a size 8/10

I'm currently 10stone 8 and only a size 12 and in no way fat at all.

SuperBeagle · 18/02/2017 20:12

I think it depends on your build. Weight and height tell very little unless it's an extreme (one way or the other) weight.

I'm 5'7" and 8 stone even (51kg). Very slim. Dropped to 47kg a few years ago and looked like a bobblehead. I maintain weight, but struggle to gain it and will lose it very quickly. But I have a very slim build: narrow shoulders, small waist, not much in the boob department etc, so I've just accepted that I have my father's beanpole figure and I need to make sure I eat enough.

I'd probably assume your figure is "normal". Not necessarily skinny or slim, but certainly not overweight or nearing it. But it's very difficult to determine without further information about your body type.

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 18/02/2017 20:13

I hate these threads as they have such varying posts, no-one can possibly comment without actually seeing you I'm afraid.
That said your Mil sounds quite unpleasant.

blankmind · 18/02/2017 20:14

It depends how you carry yourself and how your body is proportioned. If you are any other body shape than apple, I'm sure you'll look fine.

As an apple at 5'3" and 9 and a half stone I'd have a very noticeable podgy belly, but still have small boobs, flat backside, thinnish arms and legs.
Hourglasses or pears at my height can be quite a lot heavier than me but look so much thinner.

I think referring to your clothes size is so misleading nowadays. I usually buy 10/12/14. I bought an 18-20 yoga top as it was in the sale and I thought a nice big baggy one would skim the midriff flab but it sits skin tight everywhere. The yoga leggings I bought are labelled "realistic" 10/12 and are fine everywhere apart from the waistband where they are a bit tight.

What matters OP is that you are happy with how your body looks, if you are happy, it's none of anyone else's business.

Octopus37 · 18/02/2017 20:16

Ignore your MIL. Llike others have said it depends on build and is well within the healthy range. I'm 5ft5 and about 9st at the moment, for me this is a bit too big but has happened for various reasons, I am about a size 10/12 at this weight were as others might still be a size 8. I think at the end of the day it is how you feel within yourself, please dont let your MIL knck your confidence.

MsMarvel · 18/02/2017 20:16

I'm 5 foot 4 (and a half!) and am 10 stone. I'm fairly slim, and am within my healthy BMI, but am currently in the process of trying to lose weight. Not too much, but I think my ideal weight would be around 9.5 stone.

justgivemethepinot · 18/02/2017 20:23

I'm 5'4 and 9st 10 and wear a size 10 (in most shops), never thought my weight was too high so neither is yours.

oldlaundbooth · 18/02/2017 20:24

I'm 5'5 and that is the weight I am aiming for. 6 weeks pp at the moment so a bit to lose. It's a healthy weight, I'm a size ten at that weight. Medium build, big boobs.

Much less and I'd look ill.

You mil sounds rude and blatantly wrong TBH.

scoobydoo1971 · 18/02/2017 20:24

MIL sounds like she is projecting her own eating issues (disorder?) onto you? You mention she is focused on diet etc. Your weight is fine. I had a 'friend' in my 20's who bought me a weighing scales as a birthday present when I had polycystic ovaries which make me tank the weight on. She kept on about how much weight I had gained like it was a sin. I was hurt at the time but upon reflection, she had some bulimia type issues and it makes you wonder...

Your BMI is not the whole story. Your bone frame is also important as the ideal weight for a lady with a large skeleton is different from a small skeleton. So much focus on weight and appearance these days, very sad. If you eat the right foods and do some gentle exercise then you are being healthy so don't be focused on your scales. I am 5ft 8 and 9 stone 10. I do look like a bag of bones even though I have a normal BMI. I would prefer to be 11 stone, but illness stops me gaining weight at the moment.

Next time MIL asks about your weight, tell her life is too short to worry about superficial things...a side swipe might shut her up.

PickAChew · 18/02/2017 20:24

Lljkk the 6 stone one clearly is slightly built, but has bony looking shoulders and little obvious muscle. The 130lb one is very slim but very very firm (and keen to show this off!)

The 90lb woman did say, when she submitted the pictures that she's glad to have gained 20lb since they were taken.

reallyanotherone · 18/02/2017 20:25

Shit.

If 9.5 st at 5'4 isn't slim i feel fucking obese now.

Or are slim and thin the same?

HerveLeger · 18/02/2017 20:25

How lovely of you. We are not talking obese proportions - and even they need to be dealt with in a different way. Can we all try to be kind ?

Pissedoffhousewife · 18/02/2017 20:30

Your MIL is rude, it is not nice to comment on anyone elses weight. According to this calculator you are about average for your height. I had just worked out my own when I saw your thread so thought I would do yours - hope it helps :)

To ask if at 5'4 and nine and half stone I would be considered slim
VibrantAmI · 18/02/2017 20:42

Whether you are 6st or 30st, your MIL has no right to judge and comment. It's none of her business and it means absolutely nothing. Your weight is your business, and yours alone.

AudreyBradshaw · 18/02/2017 20:45

Your MIL is rude whether you were 6 stone or 16 stone.

I'm 5,3 and 10 stone. (12 weeks post partum and the morning I went into labour i was 13, 6.) I'm happy with my weight. I'm healthy. If I can shift another stone by the beginning of June I'll be made up. If not, I still feel awesome!

HappyAxolotl · 18/02/2017 20:52

BTW, when I'm hitting the gym and walking regularly I can put on a stone but stay the same size with a slightly slimmer middle. I gain muscle quite easily especially on my legs. I look and feel good like that but wouldn't pass the BMI test.

BalloonSlayer · 18/02/2017 20:59

Mumsnet is very weird about weight. Most threads would put 9st 7 at 5'4" as really quite thin (although slap bang in the middle of the BMI range).

Not this one! Everyone seems tiny.

The photos up thread - gorgeous!- by Jaimx86 looked like me when I was 8 stone not 9 and a half. I am less than 9 st 7 now and still don't look like that Grin

But I do have v thin lower legs and lower arms

CrabbyJo · 18/02/2017 21:03

I'm that height and weight and I'm uncomfortable with my size. I'm over a stone heavier than I've ever been but it depends on your frame I guess. For me I'm too big

RosyGold · 18/02/2017 21:07

Errrr I am 5 foot 3 and weigh 9 stone 7 pounds - I still think of myself as slim and wear size 8/10 clothes!! I do have 300cc of silicone in each tit but don't know if that would weigh more than a normal tit?

murmuration · 18/02/2017 21:11

And to those saying she's normal, that's bollocks. Normal in the UK is currently a size 14 or 16 isn't it? OP is way under what can be considered normal.

But I'm that exact height and weight, and I am size 14. In my adult life, I've never been less than size 12, and was size 10-12 as a skinny teen (8.5 stone). It definitely is 'normal' as far as underweight/healthy/overweight goes. Whether it is 'average' is another question...

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 18/02/2017 21:16

For comparison I weigh between 9 and 9 and a half stone (not pregnant!) and am 5'7. I'm a size 10.

TaraCarter · 18/02/2017 21:18

Just to add a counter-balance, I weigh 4 pounds more than you and am an inch shorter, and this week someone asked me how I stayed so lovely and slim.

Therefore you must be slim. Case closed!

runninglikemad · 18/02/2017 21:38

Oh it's all so subjective though isn't it? I am 7.5 stone at the same height as the OP and would love to put on another stone. Everyone is bigger than me so I have a skewed idea of what is thin, slim, big, overweight etc. It all depends what your starting point is really.

TaraCarter · 18/02/2017 21:53

Yep. It all depends on where your body stores your fat, whether you're good at dressing for your shape, your body's fat to muscle ratio and whether the person judging you has a rational viewpoint. Wink

jaggythistle · 18/02/2017 22:45

Your MIL is an arse.

FWIW I'm the same height and almost 1/2 stone lighter. But I just lost 3 stone to get here so definitely feel slimmer!
