To ask if at 5'4 and nine and half stone I would be considered slim

Mil commented today that I'm in her words quite a high weight for my height. She is around the same height and over a stone lighter. I think I'm a good weight and that 5'4 is slim and not overweight at all. Am I in denial?

OP posts:
reallyanotherone · 18/02/2017 19:44

Fuck me we are screwed up about weight.

9.5st at that height is fine. Yes you are slim.

I was the same weight as a teenager. I was perfectly slim and fit, but certain family members would say i was "heavy".

One eating disorder later, which is what it took to get below 8.5 stone. They still referred to me as "well built" at my lowest weight. The problem was theirs.

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 18/02/2017 19:45

If you have a DD I would not be allowing your MIL to spend unsupervised time with her. Way to instil body hang-ups, stupid woman.

NobodyKnowsTiddlyPom · 18/02/2017 19:46

I am 5ft4 and am bang on 9 stone. I consider myself to be on the heavy side at 9 1/2 stone, definitely not slim. I struggle to run properly when I'm that weight and definitely don't feel as healthy as I could be. On the other hand, the rest of my family (mum, sister, brother etc) are all well over 15 stone and so they consider me to be skinny even when I tip the scales at almost 10 stone (which I tend to do every couple of years due to weight gain from steroids for my arthritis). I guess it depends on who you spend time with as to how you see your body shape, and it will also depend on your fat/muscle mass of course.

glitterazi · 18/02/2017 19:47

I'm several inches taller than you and you're a bit heavier than me. I would feel overweight at 9.5 stone.

How is that helpful? OP is a perfectly healthy weight for her height and MIL comments and shit like this is just what she doesnt' need.
At several inches taller you could possibly be in the underweight category (at not knowing your height impossible to say but likely)

ToastyFingers · 18/02/2017 19:50

I'm 5'2 and at 9 and a half stone I was a size 14 bottom and 12 top and didn't look slim.

Your MIL can fuck off though. You could weigh 3 time that and it still wouldn't be any of her business.

reallyanotherone · 18/02/2017 19:50

It's not about whether other people feel fat at that weight.

The o/p is a perfectly good weight. Other people saying "ooh well i'd feel fat if i were your size" really isn't helpful is it?

You might as well just agree with the mil.

Mistoffelees · 18/02/2017 19:51

I'm the same height as you and am trying to lose the weight I put on after losing it all for my wedding, I'll start feeling slim at around 10st3lb and haven't been below 10st, which is perfect for me now, since I was a skinny teenager, just to give some balance to the people saying they'd feel overweight at your weight Hmm

balence49 · 18/02/2017 19:51

I'm 5"3 and would be ecstatic to be less than 10 stone! What a rude mil, she would only make a comment like that once in my earshot! It'd be like sport to me to rip her to shreds. Hope if you have dds she isn't spouting crap like that to them.

Alwaysinahurrynow · 18/02/2017 19:53

At your height and weight, you would be absolutely fine whatever way you carry it for health reasons. People have lots of different views of what slim is!

Vinorosso74 · 18/02/2017 19:55

I think it varies from person to person. What's ok for one isn't for someone else. I'm the same height and at 9 and a half stone look a bit podgy but that's probably down to my frame. Just under 9 is ok for me.

Happybunny19 · 18/02/2017 19:56

There's some bullshit on here OP. I'm 5'5" and just under 9 and a half stone nine months after birth. I now consider myself slim again and am in size 10 clothes. I would prefer to shed another half a stone, but was much smaller when younger prior to kids, so probably have unrealistic expectations (now I'm old too). I've checked my BMI and I'm well within the normal range, so your slim, ignore the bitchy MIL.

And to those saying she's normal, that's bollocks. Normal in the UK is currently a size 14 or 16 isn't it? OP is way under what can be considered normal.

yorkshirepuddingandroastbeef · 18/02/2017 19:56

I'm 5' 4" and 9st 7lb is my resting weight.

I weighed about 8st 7lb at uni but I was very active and didn't eat a lot.

I'd ignore your MIL. Is she a diet bore? i.e. Can't ever eat anything because she is 'being good'? Yawn...

MrDacresEUSubsidy · 18/02/2017 19:57

I'm the same height as you but considerably fatter! Between 9-10 st for me is the 'right' weight. If I drop below 9 st I look gaunt and very unhealthy. The 'right' weight for you will depend on your build. I have big feet, broad shoulders and massive norks. My friend - who is also the same height, looks plump if she goes over 9 st, but she has tiny hands and feet and bones like a wee bird. It's all relative.

Dulcimena · 18/02/2017 19:57

I'm 5"4 and a half, and 10 stone atm and tbh feeling chunky Sad. 9.5 is ok for me, 9 is good. You've probably got more muscle than she does if she's a stone lighter and presumably quite a bit older.

Liara · 18/02/2017 19:58

I wouldn't say slim, but normal.

I'm the same height and 9st and I feel I could bear to lose half a stone, even though I am very muscular.

But then most of my life I have been well under 8 stone, so it's more about what I'm used to than anything else.

Dulcimena · 18/02/2017 20:01

Oh and just to add, my friend is the same height, a stone and a half heavier than me but 12 years younger and looks much slimmer, so what's on the scales really doesn't mean anything.

BeaveredBadgered · 18/02/2017 20:02

If you're happy it really doesn't matter. I'd say that your weight sounds fine for your height. I'm 5 foot 4 and probably feel happiest at around 9 st but I've been heavier and lighter than this. Really, who cares though and why it is any of her business?

Screwinthetuna · 18/02/2017 20:03

I would say 'slim' is visual, rather than weight, so wouldn't know without seeing you. Obviously, if you are a size 8, you are hardly large. She sounds pretty rude, who says that..

MeNeedSleep · 18/02/2017 20:03

Are you fit and healthy?

I'm same weight & height but it's mostly muscle, I have very little fat. I wouldn't be able to lose weight without losing muscle, which I don't want to do

BeaveredBadgered · 18/02/2017 20:04

She probably has lighter bones than you if she's post menopause and less muscle.

Aducknotallama · 18/02/2017 20:05

I am that height and weight, pretty muscular and toned as I go to the gym 5/6 times a week and am a size 8/10. I would certainly consider myself slim as I have a flat stomach. Honestly so much depends on build, I have been 8 stone and skinny with no muscle tone and 11stone and flabby. Ignore your MIL you know yourself if you are happy with how you look.

MeNeedSleep · 18/02/2017 20:05

So I might be heavier but slimmer than some

MyMrKnightley · 18/02/2017 20:05

Healthy weight range is between 7 10lb and 10 6lb according to NHS site so you're good

MaisyPops · 18/02/2017 20:06

I'd not say slim. More normal build.
Im 5ft6 and 8 stone 7. Im quite slim build.

Butteredpars1ps · 18/02/2017 20:06

As other pp's have said it varies on build and muscle percentage. I consider a size 8 at 5'4 is slim. I'm 5'3 and am happy at an 8-10.
