To ask if at 5'4 and nine and half stone I would be considered slim

Worried61 · 18/02/2017 18:47

Mil commented today that I'm in her words quite a high weight for my height. She is around the same height and over a stone lighter. I think I'm a good weight and that 5'4 is slim and not overweight at all. Am I in denial?

Slim-normal depending on build. Tell her that muscle weighs more than fat and as people get older they loose muscle mass, so by her age she's bound to weigh much less Grin Then never disclose your weight to her again (or just deduct 12 pounds before you do). Seriously provided you are in the healthy range it's none of her business.

Hopelass · 18/02/2017 19:14

I'm 5'5" and 9.5 stone and a size 10. I'd say I'm certainly not overweight but slim to me would be about 9 stone or under. It's very subjective though! Also depends where your weight is carried.

glitterazi · 18/02/2017 19:14

I'm 5ft 4 and know 9 and a half stone is perfectly in the middle of the BMI healthy weight range for your height.
Ignore MIL.
I'm considerably over 9 and a half st now Sad but this was always my perfectly healthy weight.

DeliveredByKiki · 18/02/2017 19:15

Totally depends on body type - BMI wise you are in the healthy range so it's totally up to you to happy with whatever size you are. Ignore MIL

FWIW I have 5inches in height on you but sit comfortably slim half a stone more, but I look chunky fairly quickly over 10.5stone. I have a friend the same height but different build who looks gaunt under 11stone so it's all bollocks really

thecatneuterer · 18/02/2017 19:16

Hopelass I agree with you entirely. I also agree that it is fundamentally subjective and I wish I'd remembered that word for my post.

EweAreHere · 18/02/2017 19:16

I'm several inches taller than you and you're a bit heavier than me. I would feel overweight at 9.5 stone.

Chippednailvarnishing · 18/02/2017 19:17

I'm 5'4 and 8st 10.

Tell your mil to stop being so rude and tell yourself to stop worrying about what other people think.

namechange20050 · 18/02/2017 19:17

Your mother in law sounds like a cow. Is she rude to you about other things?

honeyroar · 18/02/2017 19:17

I don't think it is, I'm a size 10-12 at that, however the airline I work for had 10 stone as it's upper weight limit for 5'6 people. I only scraped in!

MrsBernardBlack · 18/02/2017 19:17

I'm the same height and in my 20s was 8 stone. The heaviest I have ever been was 11stone +. I'm now about the same weight as you and I think it looks fine, and am size 10/12.

I am in my 50s, and if I only weighed 8 stone now I would just look ill and scraggy.

Valentine2 · 18/02/2017 19:18

You can probably loose somewhere around 2-4kg if you want to achieve the absolute ideal of BMI at that height. You are at the upper limit. Depending on your body type, you may or may not look slim.

ThisMorningWentBadly · 18/02/2017 19:18

I'm that height and when 9.5 stone I'm slim - I look unwell if lighter. I have very wide shoulders and hips (think Jessica bunnies ugly sister)

demisphere · 18/02/2017 19:18

I'm 5 foot 3 and a half...at 9.5 stone I would be slim by most people's standards. I feel truly slim when I'm between 8.5 and 9 stone though. Less than 8.5 and I start to look scrawny.

MikeUniformMike · 18/02/2017 19:18

I'm a couple of cms shorter than you and I would say that it depends on your build (you say broad) and whether you're muscly or not. It definitely doesn't sound overweight. I look best around 8 st 4 and a tub at 10 st. When I worked out a lot I looked great at 9st 4.

Chickydoo · 18/02/2017 19:19

Back in the 1960's 70's when your MIL was younger 5'4 and 91/2 stone was probably a bit sturdy.
Things have changed & now with BMI charts etc it's considered fine.
It is fine, it is healthy, it is ok. Not very slim, not fat at all, just fine.
If you feel fine & are happy with your weight that is great.
Most people seem not to be happy with their weight.

Jaimx86 · 18/02/2017 19:19

Depends on body type. I was hovering around 9stone in these pics and thought I was fat at the time... I'm also 5'4. At my lightest since being 16 years old I've been 8 and a half stone, and wasn't eating regularly. I looked awful! I think you height and weight sounds far from being too heavy, Op. people should keep their comments about weight to themselves.

PickAChew · 18/02/2017 19:19

Your mil is rude. I'm 5'4 and aspire to be 9.5 stone. That would put me at about middle of the healthy weight range. I'm currently 10 stone and far from fat.

PollyPerky · 18/02/2017 19:19

A lot depends on your frame size and whether you carry the weight as muscle or fat.
I'm 5 3" and under 8 st , have been all my life and still have a good covering of fat.

BabyHamster · 18/02/2017 19:19

I'd say slim side of normal. Your MIL was very rude, does she often make comments like that?!

Lunalovepud · 18/02/2017 19:19

Your MIL is a cheeky cow.

My PILs have also got a bloody nerve and regularly ask me how much I weigh. She constantly asks me how much weight I am gaining when I am pregnant too.

I laugh it off because I am fit and healthy and workout three times per week so even if I am a bit soggy around the midsection (after I had DC1) I am in a better physical state than they are. Wink

demisphere · 18/02/2017 19:19

But yeah it does depend on build. I am an hourglass with big boobs so can probably still look slim at a higher weight than somebody flat chested.

IrnBruTortie · 18/02/2017 19:20

Yes, ignore your mil.
I'm exactly the same height. Anything below just under 9 stone and I look ill. Ideally I'm about 9 1/2, when I'm an 8 bottom and 10 top. currently slightly larger

Marmitelover55 · 18/02/2017 19:21

I'm the same height as you and currently weigh 10'7 which is very overweight, although I have lost 11 pounds recently. I am aiming for 8'7 (so another 2 stone to go). At 8 stone I'm a size 8 and a size 10 at 8'7 which is where I want to be. I'm looking forward to being under 10 stone!

manicinsomniac · 18/02/2017 19:22

Gosh, I hope you count as slim!! I'm very underweight but my doctors would like me to weigh just under 8 stone. As I'm 3 inches shorter than you, that's the same as you weighing 9st 4.

It's actually making me hyperventilation a little to know that so many people would consider that flabby! More reasons not to gain weight, I guess.

Seriously, this place sometimes. Makes me double check I'm reading MN and not MPA!!

Valentine2 · 18/02/2017 19:23

Sometimes you can put your body under pressure if you try to reach the ideal BMI. I can't do that for example. So I am happy in my own skin. I am sure men don't care about a couple or two kg plus or minus. Smile
