To ask if at 5'4 and nine and half stone I would be considered slim

Worried61 · 18/02/2017 18:47

Mil commented today that I'm in her words quite a high weight for my height. She is around the same height and over a stone lighter. I think I'm a good weight and that 5'4 is slim and not overweight at all. Am I in denial?

Lochan · 18/02/2017 19:23

Your MIL is deeply rude.

Despite some of the previous posts you are not overweight.

I'm 5ft 4 and a (slim looking) size 8 at 9.5 stone. At 9 stone I have hollow cheeks and everyone asks if I'm ill.

The most important question is are you happy with your weight?

If the answer is yes then what anyone else says it feels is irrelevant.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 18/02/2017 19:23

NHS choices BMI calculator gives the healthy range for this height as 7st 10lbs to 10st 6lbs so you are not close to upper limit!
Big range as big variety of builds, bust sizes etc.

HerveLeger · 18/02/2017 19:24

Why does your MIL even know what you weigh?! And as for all the "helpful" people telling you what they weigh... People's metabolism and body shape are so individual so as to be absolutely pointless as comparators, especially those who are trying to score points. Because "lighter" is always better... :-(

randomer · 18/02/2017 19:24

I am 5 foot and 16 stone.

eddiemairswife · 18/02/2017 19:24

It's the dress sizes that intrigue me. When I was young I weighed 8st 1lb at 5ft 3 and a half ins, and was in a size 12.

Happyfeet1972 · 18/02/2017 19:25

All depends on your build. I'm 5.4 and at 9 stone would be a size 8-10. I'm well built, wide shoulders and carry my weight in the right places (boobs, bum). I could get away with up to 10.5 at a nice size 12. Oh what I'd kill to be 10.5 again.

demisphere · 18/02/2017 19:26

Yes re dress sizes...20 years ago I weighed 8 stone and was a size 10.

Today I weigh 10 stone and am still a size 10.

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 18/02/2017 19:27

It's fascinating how we carry the weight so differently. I'm 5'5" and 9st 4, and size 10-12 depending on the shop. I have to go below 9st to get near a size 8 and that takes too much deprivation for me to sustain it.

PickAChew · 18/02/2017 19:27

And I'm obviously built very differently to worriedmum at 41-32-37!

My arse shrinks fastest when I lose weight.

Bogburglar75 · 18/02/2017 19:28

NHS BMI calculator says that weight and height is BMI of 22.4 i.e. slap bang in the middle of the healthy range.

www.nhs.uk/tools/documents/healthy_weight_v3/healthy_weight.html?variant=phone

Nothing to worry about!

murmuration · 18/02/2017 19:28

Woah, there's a lot of people at this same height/weight and size 8-10! That's me exactly too - and I'm a size 14. People obviously carry weight differently. I knew this, but slightly boggling at the idea that there are people 4 sizes smaller than me at same height/weight.

I don't think I'm "slim", but I'm confident that I'm a healthy weight. I don't look slim until below 9st, but look reasonably fine until about 11st (which is slightly over healthy BMI).

honeyroar · 18/02/2017 19:29

IT depends on your body type Eddiemairswife, whatever size I am I still have big hands, feet and limbs, yet an hourglass figure. Someone else the same size waist may have a more athletic figure with slimmer limbs and tiny hands and feet..

Kennington · 18/02/2017 19:30

I think it depends on where you are. In Italy and Spain and France I feel more overweight than in the U.K.
Am 5'5 and 8.5stone.
I would say slim but not really as have large chest. I think it is all relative. Am a size 10 and am a good stone heavier that 20 years ago when I was a size 10.

Chippednailvarnishing · 18/02/2017 19:32

Maybe we should all start concentrating on health rather than slimness.

LittleMyLikesSnuffkin · 18/02/2017 19:33

I'd say that's a healthy weight for your height going by bmi.

I often wonder why certain people say the things they say to others. In what universe is it not considered rude to make personal comments about others like that? Hmm my (thankfully) ex MIL is obsessed with weight. Hers other people's it's all she talks about and is often rude. It's so boring. And how she hasn't got a smack in the mouth by now is beyond me.

Gabilan · 18/02/2017 19:34

You're right in the middle of the healthy range of BMI although that is only a guide. Unless you're carrying a lot of muscle * you're probably more an average build than slim as such but does that matter? It's not your MIL's business.

  • Since muscle is denser than fat. Muscle and fat weigh the same. A kg of fat and a kg of muscle both weigh a kilo. By definition. But there will be less volume of muscle.
littlefrog3 · 18/02/2017 19:34

What a great weight for that height, I bet you look lovely. And what a nasty comment for the woman to make. Is she horribly insecure and full of self-loathing? She sounds it.

Cantusethatname · 18/02/2017 19:34

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery - I read these and wonder, at 5'6 (and a half) and 9.5 stone I am always a 12. I could never fit in an 8-10. Yet if I lose any weight I get a really bony chest and neck which looks awful.

lljkk · 18/02/2017 19:36

This is kind of cool. Height-weight picture chart.

The problem is, I think some of those are lying!! I can't see much difference between 90-140 lbs at 5'4".

Alargegarden · 18/02/2017 19:37

That gives you a bmi of around 23 which is towards the upper middle end of the healthy range for a woman of your size.
You are the best judge of whether you have surplus pounds or not. Ignore your MIL. She sounds rude.

Rugbyplayersarehot · 18/02/2017 19:39

Have to confess haven't rtft.

And your mil is rude.

However I would feel fat at that weight and I am 5/2 so a bit smaller than you but only feel slim at 8 stones.

Your weight would b too heavy for me

spellingtestmess · 18/02/2017 19:39

I'd LOVE to be that weight. Haven't been that since I was 18. 10.5-11 and I'd look well (heavy boned Wink)

RedastheRose · 18/02/2017 19:40

No one can tell from height weight ratio because they just don't work. Different builds and body shapes are all important. IMO your mother in law was being a bit of a bitch. If you feel healthy and comfortable at that weight and with your shape then just ignore her. As teenagers my friend and I were the same height and similar slim build could wear the same size 10 clothes but I weighed almost a stone more.

ActuallyThatsSUPREMECommander · 18/02/2017 19:43

It's a good healthy weight for a mature woman of that height. Back in the seventies it might be considered "well covered" - at the fuller figured and mature side of normal. Nowadays it counts as slim and in some offices you'd be "that skinny cow from accounts" but it's never been overweight by anybody's standards.

junebirthdaygirl · 18/02/2017 19:43

My dd 23 is 9 stone. Very very slim. Size 8 in jeans but size 6 in a dress. Very small bust and tiny waist but very strong. She is the same height as you and looks fab. Runs regularly and in great shape. Your Mil manners could do with growing in size.
