DH has bought me one as a surprise, it's just a random letter and number followed by my initials (wasn't mega expensive)

But I'm just not sure about it! He thinks it's the best gift ever 😳 But he says we can just not register it and sell it on if I don't want it. I don't want to be ungrateful but what's the general consensus? Are they for twats or not?

My friend has a quite rare and valuable plate consisting of three characters. Her father bought it for her years ago when they first came out and were very cheap / not in high demand.

Now she has it on a 15 year old Ford Fiesta which is v amusing...... the plate is worth about fifty times more than the car!

My dad bought my mum one as a surprise. She wasn't a huge fan but he was so they had one each on their respective cars. Now she's passed away, I've got it on my car and I'm surprisingly attached to it. And it has the added bonus of disguising how old the car is!

TortieandWhite · 08/02/2017 10:53

My DH has got one; had it years, way way before they became popular. He was offered 32k for his a few years ago Shock

WhoKn0wsWhereTheTimeG0es · 08/02/2017 10:54

I don't think they are tacky, naff or any of those things. I just don't like how noticeable they make a car, I know a few people with them and always notice whdn they drive past or I see them in car park.

I remember seeing H07 5HIT getting pulled over by the police once though. Maybe that one was a bit tacky.

Foxesarefriends · 08/02/2017 10:55

Yes, Dds plate makes her car look older than it is.
It makes me like it even more to know that people think that they are naff. It's like saying that you shouldn't choose a colour that you like when buying your car unless you sit staring at it all the time. Or the shape, or anything that isn't strictly functional, because you are doing it for other people Confused

Purplebluebird · 08/02/2017 10:57

I think they're a bit daft, but can't say I get my tail in a fluff about it :)

Sidge · 08/02/2017 11:05

I liked the one near me that was on a beautiful Mercedes - Y5AVE. Grin

ALemonyPea · 08/02/2017 11:06

I think they can incredibly naff.

One local to me reads KI55HUG and there is also an UGB00TS or something similar, can't remember the exact spelling.

Just your initials with a number seems fine, not too try hard.

namechangedtoday15 · 08/02/2017 11:07

I agree they are chavvy if they're just your name or your initials.

Having said that, I think some of them which are supposed to be amusing or as kind of advertising are fun.

The owner of William Hill betting shops had a Rolls Royce when I was growing up and his number plate was "BAC 1T".

Recently in a traffic jam on the motorway and noticed that the driver was a stunning redhead - her number plate was "G1NGE" Smile

Sparklingbrook · 08/02/2017 11:10

I don't like them much but a lot of my family have them.

I also think unless they properly spell something then they can be a bit confusing and naff. Like replacing letters with numbers etc

If they spell a name it's useful for when you comment on their awful driving. Grin

Llanali · 08/02/2017 11:11

I love them! Always have done, I've got my eye on a new one.

My dad has one, I have my late mothers one now.

Norland · 08/02/2017 11:11

There's a woman in my locale, driving around in a Mercedes with 9 UPU as a plate. I think the car is newer than 1971 though.

OP why on earth would you care what a bunch of random strangers on the web think? If you want to be different, get a plate with three letters and three numbers, i.e. pre 1963, where the letters and numbers don't relate to you at all.

"My name is available and it's not expensive. My reservation is that makes you recognisable on the road. A road rager for example may see it parked after an incident and key it or worse know where you live/work ... extreme but not impossible."

this 100 times for me
personally not keen on them, think they're a bit.....weird really

Note3 · 08/02/2017 11:15

I have one...wish I didn't. Costs me approx £100 every time I change my car just cos of swapping the plates and then there's a faff of having to recontact insurers once plate on new car to update record and has to be done within 28 days of taking out policy or they charge you an extra £30 or so administration fee!

Mine was bought for me as a present years ago and I tried to sell it but the family member who bought it took great offence to this so I continue to be stuck with it.

It's like the gift that keeps on giving...just not in a good way!

I also don't like that if someone takes issue with my driving, instead of being a generic car with a generic plate I am instead an easily identifiable car for the future!

SoupDragon · 08/02/2017 11:17

Ohh! Someone's mentioned "Chavvy"!! I call BINGO!

SoupDragon · 08/02/2017 11:18

A road rager for example may see it parked after an incident and key it or worse know where you live/work ... extreme but not impossible

Or, you might get kidnapped by aliens.

ALemonyPea · 08/02/2017 11:19

Navy, if it's a new new car you can ask the dealership to try get a number plate with your initials when it's registered.

busyboysmum · 08/02/2017 11:19

They are really noticeable. I have a couple of friends who have them and you drive past them and clock them.

So I would worry that if there was a road rage issue you are so easily identifiable.

I do not like drawing attention to myself in this day and age. There are some funny people about.

Unless you sit staring at your number plate in the privacy of your own home, it quite clearly is sending a message to others, as it's on view to them. So to say you don't care what other people think is a bit odd when you've gone out of the way to get one.

tpThats ridiculous. I don't care what other people think about any of my purchases because I have bought them for. me. My coat is on view to everyone too, I don't give a shit what people think about that either :o

ExConstance · 08/02/2017 11:25

Having a personalised number plate does mean that no one will know exactly how old your car is, for some people that is an advantage.

Eolian · 08/02/2017 11:30

I think they are super naff. Grin at the CLA55Y one - was it meant to be ironic perhaps? I don't know anybody who has them. Whenever I spot a car with them, I just wonder what the point is.

teachergirl2011 · 08/02/2017 11:31

I have one. Bought in 2000. Love it.
