DH has bought me one as a surprise, it's just a random letter and number followed by my initials (wasn't mega expensive)

But I'm just not sure about it! He thinks it's the best gift ever 😳 But he says we can just not register it and sell it on if I don't want it. I don't want to be ungrateful but what's the general consensus? Are they for twats or not?

Navy - it's not that simple. Some ppl take issue with driving where there is none and then click your personal plate

TheseAreTheGoodOldDays · 08/02/2017 11:39

I like them :) fancy one with my initials, will wait until I get married next year and see what's available I think!
I don't think it would look 'twat-ish' if it's not blatantly obvious..

DH bought me one a few years ago. I used it for a year and then got rid of it because I realised I spent too much time worrying about where I could park the car so my friends/business contact couldn't see it.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/02/2017 11:45

I've got one, not an obvious one, my initials are part of it. I like it and don't care what a bunch of strangers on the internet thinks!

I don't want a posh handbag, wouldn't get a piece of art for the money and a weekend in an Air BNB definitely doesn't appeal. Each to their own!

Itmustbemyage · 08/02/2017 11:46

Both our current and last car albeit unintentionally, could be seen as personalised (just last letters) current one with surname and previous one with my first name.
Am I still "twat-ish" if I didn't plan it Confused

NewPantsforaNewYear · 08/02/2017 11:47

SoupDragon shouldn't that be B1 NG0? Smile

Chardonnay73 · 08/02/2017 11:50

I have one. My family clubbed together and bought it for my 40th. And it's on my Range Rover. I should obviously be excommunicated from mnet Wink
Its my shortened name. I wouldn't have gone out and bought it myself, but I was very touched that they'd clubbed together to organise it.
If you like it, go for it! People judge whatever you do....

There's one in near me which is something like MR5 GR3Y

It appeared around about the time of the 50 shades franchise just to compound it's twattery Grin

Foxesarefriends · 08/02/2017 12:01

NinjaPosse the examples I gave do, I am not sure how you could possibly know that they don't.
I have no idea whether I have got the 0 where a o should be or vice Verda, but it's pretty obvious that no one with any intelligence is going to put the exact figuration up.

Madbengalmum · 08/02/2017 12:02

I am of the opinion that proper personalised plates are not naff ie 1 SBG or 22 DSG, however, trying to make a name up by cutting into numbers think 'PR1CEY' or random ones G12 YPY are naff. Thats just my opinion.

DollyMcDolly · 08/02/2017 12:02

Someone on my school run has one of those massive BMW cars that says SK11PPY or something like that. I like that one actually. I take it's his nickname or maybe Australian.

ArriettyClock1 · 08/02/2017 12:07

They are a bit embarrassing.

I don't think I would be keeping it.

Oblomov17 · 08/02/2017 12:12

Dh has one. I don't like them. He keeps offering to buy me one. I was diplomatic, may times, and in the end, I lost my cool. and said "look, I'm sorry darling, but I really don't want one, I think they are naff and shit". Blush

Twinklyfaerieglade · 08/02/2017 12:14

I like mine because I can always remember my number plate. V poor memory so many embarrassing moments til I got it. Loads of parking machines now require you to input reg, spent loads of time waiting for friends to run back to their cars because they couldn't remember theirs

maddiemookins16mum · 08/02/2017 12:17

I dislike them, bit naff and some are cringeworthy. I just don't get the whole thing, but hey, each to their own.

Eliza22 · 08/02/2017 12:18

I think many many years ago, they were a sign of wealth and you usually saw them on a Rolls or Bentley. Nowadays, no. So many people have them and I think they look naff.

My mum had one on her new BMW and it cost almost as much as the car. I told her she needed her head feeling 😄 I wouldn't want one.

CatOnAWarmTinRoof · 08/02/2017 12:18

I love mine, it's reasonably subtle and is a nice easy number to remember.

Naff and crass? Conspicuous spending?
It cost £250.

Hands up all you naysayers who own a handbag that cost more

austenozzy · 08/02/2017 12:19

There was a car where I used to live with the prat plate 'SEC 5Y' (sexy, geddit?!). That took some chutzpah. I can't even remember what she looked like, so wasn't particularly accurate either.

SheDancesOnTheSand · 08/02/2017 12:24

I bought a Golf a few years back that came with a personalised plate. The previous owner had an Audi A4 and was going to keep the plate but changed his mind....

It was great having one of when trying to spot the car or filling in paperwork but having people point and laugh (worst was when I was stuck in traffic behind a school bus) all because it was A4 ANL. A part of me wishes I'd kept the plate just because of how ridiculous it was!

cattypussclaw · 08/02/2017 12:25

We are not a personalised number plate family and my Dad is incredibly careful about spending money but, surprisingly, he turned up recently with a number plate that made no sense to me. It was G3 followed by three letters. He had to explain that it stood for Grandad of three, then each of his three grandchildren's first initials, in the order they were born. Must admit I thought that was quite sweet as only we know what's "personalised"'about it.

steppemum · 08/02/2017 12:27

My dad bought my mum one years ago.

She thought it was amusing and it went on the car.
Quite identifiable as it was her first name, eg May or Sue.

The thing was, she lives in a small town, and everyone all the time knew where she was. Friends would say - Oh I saw you were at the leisure centre on saturday. Or, passed you on the road to xx yesterday.

She actually began to feel that it was a massive invasion of privacy

PoisonousSmurf · 08/02/2017 12:27

There is a car down the village with 'SMUG 1' And it is a very expensive car.
Makes me wonder how much road rage is directed at him each day? Wink
