Aibu re personalised number plate? Yes or no

DH has bought me one as a surprise, it's just a random letter and number followed by my initials (wasn't mega expensive)

But I'm just not sure about it! He thinks it's the best gift ever 😳 But he says we can just not register it and sell it on if I don't want it. I don't want to be ungrateful but what's the general consensus? Are they for twats or not?

It's not really what we think, I think you've summed up your views on the issue. The only good thing I can think of is, if you were like into cars and you didn't want people to know how old your car is, get one of these number plates.

Apart from that I can't see why you'd need one, they generally start about £250 to £500 for a basic one, so it's an expensive gift. I think I'd rather have a nice keepsake. To keep it on retention you have to pay so much a year. Can DH return it if you don't want it?

KitKat1985 · 08/02/2017 10:34

DH has one, and has had it for many years (prior to us starting dating). Honestly I think it's twattish. And every time he's changed cars (I think he's on his 4th car with me now) there's all these bloody extra costs and faff involved with re-registering the plate to a different car with the DVLA. Plus (because when he was 18 and got it he thought it was cool) the numberplate is basically his initials with 666 in it, which always makes the local police assume he's a dodgy git, so he's been pulled over countless times, meaning it's a total PITA. And it's hardly representative of who he is - he's now a bloody 35 year old IT technician with two young daughters and an interest in star trek for Christ sake. Plus now we're married and have the same surname, and the same first initial for our Christian name, whenever I drive the bloody thing it looks like it's personalised to me. But he still loves it. Sigh.

Plus despite the 666 numberplate he still insists on driving his car to funerals etc which frankly just feels bloody awkward in a church car park.

My friend did an OU course on investing and they were advised to buy personalised number plates as they have a very good return on investment.
MN seems to have a hatred for them . . .and RRs . . . and sports cars . . . but I think you should keep it. Even if you don't want to put it on your car. Keep the paperwork for a few years and then sell it on. remembers I have one in the corner of my office that hasn't been on my car for years

Oogle · 08/02/2017 10:35

My DH has one which is work/hobby related. I absolutely hate it. I've refused to put it on either vehicle now so it's just sat on retention. He has finally put it up for sale for an eye-watering £2k.

Funnily enough it's not selling.

SparkleTwinkleGoldGlitter · 08/02/2017 10:35

I like them, dh got me one on my 30th. Then I couldn't give two fucks what anyone thinks tbh!

CrazyPebbles · 08/02/2017 10:38

Personally I think they are a bit naff, more so the ones that use things like BO55 on a ford escort rather than initials and a number.

DP has very niace cars and personal plates but his initials and numbers apparently these are an "investment" my eyes rolled to the back of my head for that one... but I love and will soon be married to the man so I put up with it, he has been told I will not be entering his religion and will be sticking to the assigned registeration of my vehicles.

He's been buying them for years, everyone has to have a hobby I guess Hmm

Mummyoflittledragon · 08/02/2017 10:38

I could get my name plus a 1 in between for 21k. Just checked. Mmmm maybe not, thanks. Ndn has a plate with the name of a sporting team on it. That must be worth tens of thousands and probably a lot more than 21k. Shock

Redpony1 · 08/02/2017 10:38

I love personalised plates, i can't see anything naff about them at all.

CaraAspen · 08/02/2017 10:38

Totally cringeworthy.

CrazyPebbles · 08/02/2017 10:41

kitkat that's hillarious! Well not so much when going to a funeral but DP is also always changing cars but what can you do?

I choose to be grateful it's number plates and that at least I'm not a cycling widow Grin

imonaplane · 08/02/2017 10:41

I like them. I have one on a BMW so I appear to be doubly naff, twattish, cringeworthy, etc. But I don't care! Grin

Ifailed · 08/02/2017 10:42

Unless you sit staring at your number plate in the privacy of your own home, it quite clearly is sending a message to others, as it's on view to them. So to say you don't care what other people think is a bit odd when you've gone out of the way to get one.

wheezles · 08/02/2017 10:42

Keep it! It's a gift.

I like them. I want one.

imonaplane · 08/02/2017 10:43

Adds odd to my list of failings!

stevie69 · 08/02/2017 10:44

Hey RQP,

Plenty of input on here but, you know what? It's all down to you. What do YOU think?

Some say they're for twas. Really? If you keep it, do you suddenly become a twt, assuming that you weren't one before? Course ya don't, hun.

You do as you see fit. And f**k the rest of us. I, for one, will not be basing my opinion of you on it. Enjoy.

S xxx

RocketQueenP · 08/02/2017 10:44

No it's something like T1 KDR

The KDR is my initials. Clearly mine has different numbers and letters not gonna advertise my actual plate on here 😂 !

Hahaha at "BR1 OCH" in Waitrose 😂 and P00 WEE😱

Once saw a bloke with LVR 80Y (lover boy) bet he had a tiny winky.

Loving imonaplane Smile

CaraAspen · 08/02/2017 10:45

It is so unnecessary and crass. One wonders what other forms of naff possessions the proud owners have? I dread to imagine...

ClaudiaApfelstrudel · 08/02/2017 10:45

They're a bit cringey. I'd be embarrassed to drive around with one

19lottie82 · 08/02/2017 10:46

My DH has got one and it's great. I'd say that the people on here that say they are "for twats" are actually bigger twats than people who have them! Hmm

OP if you like it then keep it, if you don't then get rid of it. Simple. Smile or you can just keep it ( you have to pay a £50 retention fee after a year) and not use it.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 08/02/2017 10:47

They're fine. Just a bit of fun.

Think people way over think it tbh.

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 08/02/2017 10:47

I saw one once which was P16 SX
This is definitely PIG SEX isn't it...
Honestly why?! Grin

InvisibleAt53 · 08/02/2017 10:48

I have one which has been passed down from my dad who had it for years. I like it because it retains that connection to him. It is an issue though if you intend to change your car often as it's costly. Although they have just changed the rules which means you can keep the number on retention for 10 years so my recommendation would be to only put it on a car you intend to keep for a while.

Newtssuitcase · 08/02/2017 10:48

I have one. DH wanted to buy it when we bought the (second hand) car to disguise the age of the car. I think that's why most people do it. It is just my initials and so most people wouldn't realise (particularly since I go by a shortened version of my first name which doesn't even start with the same initial). It made DH happy for a couple of hundred quid and I couldn't be bothered to argue.

Hate the ones that spell words though.

dailydance · 08/02/2017 10:49

I think they are chavvy Blush
