DH has bought me one as a surprise, it's just a random letter and number followed by my initials (wasn't mega expensive)

But I'm just not sure about it! He thinks it's the best gift ever 😳 But he says we can just not register it and sell it on if I don't want it. I don't want to be ungrateful but what's the general consensus? Are they for twats or not?

I think it's a great present in terms of thoughtfulness, it's just whether it's the sort of thing you like. There are some very bitchy comments on here, that's for sure.

KathArtic · 08/02/2017 10:02

You are asking MN so the majority will say twatish.

However, I too think they are twatish.

Unless you are mega rich and can have MN1, then it's a No.

Foxesarefriends · 08/02/2017 10:04

Dd got one from her grandparents for her 18th, my mother was horrified (other side), I think it's really sweet that in 60 years time when they are long gone, she will still have that constant reminder. Much more preferable than a handbag to her.

It is very much the done thing to call them naff though.

SoupDragon · 08/02/2017 10:06

There's nothing wrong with spending money on stuff but why not buy a piece of art, a nice handbag, go on a nice holiday, whatever makes your heart sing. Rather than spending money on a n ugly piece of plastic with some writing on it.

You couldn't get a nice holiday for £300.

Butkin1 · 08/02/2017 10:10

This has been discussed many times on MN over the years and they are generally hated..

I inherited ones from my mum and dad when they died. I have mums initials on my car and we've put my dads on our horsebox. We like them..

Certainly it looks good on the horsebox because whilst the box is newish the chassis is quite old (typical of most boxes) so hides it's chassis age.

I do find them horribly tacky, I didn't know there was a mumsnet concencus on it before.

Lweji · 08/02/2017 10:14

I'd normally say no, but if it's not obvious, why not?

namechange20050 · 08/02/2017 10:15

I've never actually seen a thread about personalised number plates on MN before! However I think they are awful. Lots of them about here, always on white Range Rovers.,

Aki23 · 08/02/2017 10:15

my mum bought one for my dad some years ago as a present - just his initials - I thought it was sweet

shovetheholly · 08/02/2017 10:16

You could get a weekend at an Airbnb for £300! And it would be loads more fun than a personalised plate. Smile

GoesDownLikeACupOfColdSick · 08/02/2017 10:16

mine was my 21st birthday present from my parents, before they were a bit naff, and DM had a cake made for me of a car with the plates on it. she died a few years later, so it's one of the last things I have from her. anyone who dislikes it (which includes DP, he hates driving around with my name on the car!) can suck it.

we also have DM's plate, which DF bought her many years ago. as we named DD after her, I guess that's her 17th birthday present sorted :)

RocketQueenP · 08/02/2017 10:16

Haha thanks all Flowers

I'm not offended at all by the ones who dislike them it's personal choice innit! And as I didn't choose one it was just a random present not even a birthday present or anything. I had the car for my birthday a few months ago. And My car marks me out as a twat anyway in many people's eyes so maybe I should just stick the plate on and go the whole hog 😝

If advanced search was working op, you would probably find that most people being rude about them are indulging in lots of things that I would consider 'tacky' Wink.

I would keep it, it's not a big deal unless you are the sort of person who cares what other people think. Would it not hurt his feelings to sell it on?

GoesDownLikeACupOfColdSick · 08/02/2017 10:17

I read somewhere that paul daniels used to have MAG1C and jimmy tarbuck used to have COM1C.

MrsJaniceBattersby · 08/02/2017 10:18

I have one
Love. It

FV45 · 08/02/2017 10:18

The only one I've ever liked was "DR DNA", driven by a senior scientist.

I think they serve no other purpose than to say 'look at me'

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 08/02/2017 10:18

I think the ones where it's a "normal" numberplate but you know it just happensto be someone's initial are just sad and a bit eye rolly that they went looking for that.

ones where someone has two Is and a screwhole to try and make an H or a 4 for an A or has changed the spacing to make it look like a word are really really sad

ones that say something ...like the PP example of the butcher's shop are mildly amusing.

Foxesarefriends · 08/02/2017 10:20

There is w white Range Rover near me with the number plate Pollice or something similar. He is the worst driver that I have ever seen, jaunts across roundabouts with no give way to the right, swings and meanders across lanes. I have no idea why he chooses to draw more attention to himself with that plate.

Dh bought me one to match his, I absolutely hate it with a passion and haven't put it on my car, although he'll expect me to soon. I'm hoping it'll go away!

BaronessEllaSaturday · 08/02/2017 10:21

Depends on the plate. If a random stranger would not realise looking at it then to me it is fine. If it is something like FCK1 on a sports car then you are a twat.
