Aibu re personalised number plate? Yes or no

DH has bought me one as a surprise, it's just a random letter and number followed by my initials (wasn't mega expensive)

But I'm just not sure about it! He thinks it's the best gift ever 😳 But he says we can just not register it and sell it on if I don't want it. I don't want to be ungrateful but what's the general consensus? Are they for twats or not?

I think they're a bit naff and I certainly wouldn't spend any money on one, but when I was a child a neighbour had a very old moggy (Morris Minor) whose number plate (not personalised, actual original registration) was my initials with a 10, eg EJW 10. I wanted that car! TBF, I was 10 year old.

ExitPursuedBySpartacus · 12/02/2017 13:09

Cara. Are you having a bad day? Am I not allowed to mention my horsebox? How is a horsebox naff?

Erm... nope. HmmHaving a great time in a personal thread atm..

Weird...

Must be exhausting being so nasty all the time Cara. Poor thing."

Tee hee. I am utterly crushed...Sad

I think anyone with 'true class and breeding' would probably keep their opinions on the subject to themselves, rather than be deliberately rude.

I think the general consensus is that such things are v v naff indeed.

CaraAspen · 12/02/2017 13:24

Personalised plates, I mean. Think hanging dice - and not in an ironic sense!

Shockers · 12/02/2017 13:25

I'm getting a slightly different idea of the general consensus on this thread.

DonttouchthatLarry · 12/02/2017 13:25

I must be a twat as I bought DH one for his 50th birthday Grin. I couldn't think of anything else to get him and wanted something he would keep and use, not be left in a cupboard. He changes his car every year (as does a high mileage) and can never remember his reg when he has to give it at races he attends, or at car park machines, so he thinks it's great.

I think expensive handbags are a waste of money, so each to their own - if you want one OP, get one, don't ask for opinions Wink

I
Am on AIBU. Just checked. It would be rude to be disingenuous.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 12/02/2017 13:27

Spending a couple of hundred on a private plate is deemed naff but spending twice that much on a designer handbag is apparently OK.
I prefer my number plate, it's lasted 20 years.
How are the handbags doing?

Horsemad · 12/02/2017 13:28

What's naff about horseboxes?

DonttouchthatLarry · 12/02/2017 13:29

ExitPursuedBySpartacus - I wanted HO55 BOX for our lorry but it's too old Sad

Horsemad · 12/02/2017 13:30

Get a newer lorry Larry, that reg is brilliant! Grin

Shockers · 12/02/2017 13:31

You are, as am I.

You brought up the notion of 'true class and breeding' having some bearing on the opinion toward personalised plates. I am simply pointing out that those with 'true class and breeding' might keep those opinions to themselves.

Those folk who are without 'true class and breeding' (it sounds more ridiculous every time I say it), are freed by the constraints of class and breeding, to be as rude as they like!

Mumsnet is obsessed with class, breeding and manners along with parking, supermarket checkout etiquette, entitled grabby people and neighbours with cannabis plantations in the loft.
