Aibu re personalised number plate? Yes or no

DH has bought me one as a surprise, it's just a random letter and number followed by my initials (wasn't mega expensive)

But I'm just not sure about it! He thinks it's the best gift ever 😳 But he says we can just not register it and sell it on if I don't want it. I don't want to be ungrateful but what's the general consensus? Are they for twats or not?

Plates like that are crass. If one has a sense of good taste, and instinctively knows what that entails, then it would be unacceptable and undesirable to have a personalised number plate. People with true class and breeding are not showy. That's the bottom line really.

Tangofandango · 10/02/2017 12:40

Navyandwhite my plate is a GAY as that's my name. My husband bought it for me 30 years ago. It was actually first registered the year I was born (1953). I love it. I've had offers of many thousands of pounds for it.

I'm not a twat, nor naff, nor a chav.

Sidge. I've recently seen Y5AVE around a few times but it's now on a beautiful Bentley.

Lweji · 10/02/2017 12:40

In most instances it's like putting your name in huge capital letters in front of a building. Wink

lakehouse · 12/02/2017 08:47

The Bentley one mentioned below is uw15hhx but misspaced to U W15HH X Terrible plate. Anything that needs to be illegal loses its impact really!

JustSpeakSense · 12/02/2017 09:08

They are twatish and try hard.

BlondeBecky1983 · 12/02/2017 09:14

I was bought one for my 18th birthday and have had if ever since. I didn't think about it being twatty at the time and haven't thought about it much since. I don't mind it though, as they go it's quite a good one.

ExitPursuedBySpartacus · 12/02/2017 09:27

I have one with my initials.

DH has one that he kept from a car he had many, many years ago.

We bought DD one with her initials for her 17th birthday along with a car.

We are naff central.

Just put a deposit down on a horse box. I might get one for that just to complete my naffness.

lakehouse · 12/02/2017 09:32

I saw a Bentley with LOV3E that was quite a nice plate. Otherwise the smaller the better!

EnormousTiger · 12/02/2017 10:29

If you like them you like them. Lots of people have them around here. I think and my family think they are a bit naff and I wouldn't have one for all kinds of reasons but plenty of people love them so let them have them. I would never say they are not quite right (off line in person) because above all we must all be polite to others. For some people it really illustrate how far they have come.

Hwever do be aware of how some people will regard them (and if you might want to be discreet it ruins that - everyone locally knows where you are at all times which indeed might be what you want. Just don't try having an affair or visiting the local m assage parlour in the car, take an uber)

Absolutely you must. The fact that you reference a horse box puts you firmly in the "naffness" category and will ensure you remain there. So cool.

It would be rude not to exit?! Eh???

Commas are so helpful. Keep practising.

SherlockPotter · 12/02/2017 10:53

I used to walk past a car that had 'BA57ARD' as its registration plate Grin

user1470041360 · 12/02/2017 10:54

My sil has one. She's a twat

I wouldn't want one myself, imo it's just an appearance thing, and I really, really don't care what my car looks like.

I know someone who is against private number plates on the grounds that people buy them to conceal the age of their car. This is one of the many things that enrages her. I've noticed from this thread that it's a common concern.

I've thought about saying that if you wanted to buy a car, the registration document would tell you the year of first registration, not to mention the big clue, which would be the model and general appearance of the vehicle, but it's not worth arguing with stupid.

I don't have a car. But enjoy yours and its plate NavyandWhite.

limitedperiodonly · 12/02/2017 11:58

A friend has one bought by her dad which spells his childhood nickname for her. Seemed harmless enough. He's dead now so it's even more important to her. I guess some people see it and rage inwardly.

EnormousTiger · 12/02/2017 12:05

MUM is fine if you like it (although in my world no personalised plate is okay and mum is not quite right either as we are mummy - class issue)

Of you like a MUM numberplate use it and like it. No one needs validation from others about these things. It can make people very happy to have all kinds of different things and we are all different.

Shockers · 12/02/2017 12:08

I saw this the other day: PN15 PSY

I couldn't help thinking how it would probably be bought up as a private plate by the owner of a grubby sex shop in years to come.

DH said he wouldn't have noticed and I have a rude mind.
