Basically my SIL has met my DD for the first time today as have the rest of DP family due to us living far from them! SIL decided today to announce she is getting a tattoo of my daughters name and something to represent her! AIBU to be really annoyed at this without even being asked?

Ahh well for those who missed it, the OP came back (albeit under another NN) and said...

Ok so on reflection I do think this is a lovely idea and DD has pull probably love it when she's older! There was just so much going on yesterday my head was all over, just think it would have been nice to have been consulted over it(not ask permission for those of you who think that's what I meant) just out of courtesy!

So she thinks it's a lovely idea...

HeyRoly · 07/02/2017 10:53

HeyRoly, why do you think tattooing your child's name on your body is not weird, but tattooing your niece's name is?

Because, as werkz has just said a couple of posts back, tattooing a name is about ownership and so if you choose to tattoo a child's name on you that isn't your child, it's weird, presumptuous, inappropriate and (like I said earlier) really tacky.

It's also like staking a claim on being a loving aunt without making the effort to actually BE a loving aunt.

Ah super. Missed the update Worra, thanks.

Ownership??

Jesus Christ, it's a baby, not a designer handbag!

And as for It's also like staking a claim on being a loving aunt without making the effort to actually BE a loving aunt.

I imagine just as many parents fall into that category.

Slapping a bit of ink on your skin, is not an indication that someone has made the effort to actually be a loving parent.

If you don't think tattooing someone's name on you signifies ownership and a super intimate relationship, then that's fine. But I do.

That's kinda odd....but then I think all tattoos are horrible so I'm not a fair judge.

user892 · 07/02/2017 11:51

HeyRoly - do you mean voodoo?

Celaena · 07/02/2017 12:03

So what does it mean when fans get the idols names tattooed? Do they think they are 'owning' them?

All sil is saying is that your dd is hugely important to her (I know op has updated)

Mrsemcgregor · 07/02/2017 12:22

I see that the OP updated but I wanted to add my 2 cents worth.

As to whether it's odd I think it depends on the individual.

If my DB got my DS name tattooed it would be relatively normal and wouldn't register on the scale as odd. Because my DB is heavily tattooed, basically uses his skin as a life story board! And he is close to my DS.

My DSIL however has no tattoos and is very much not the tattoo type. She also doesn't see the kids that often and when she does she doesn't really interact with them. So I would be a bit Hmm I wouldn't mind at all, but it would be weird.

Sallystyle · 07/02/2017 12:38

I have my husband's name and he has my name tattooed.

I'm afraid that neither of us owns the other.

TheNaze73 · 07/02/2017 12:39

It's a bit odd I think.

Each to their own

TheDowagerCuntess · 07/02/2017 17:45

You can think name tattoos mean 'ownership' all you like, but they don't!

They're just tattoos. Really.
