I know he is merely a figure head but oh my goodness. He said exactly what I wanted to say.
I am all of a sudden finding my belief in British democracy revised.
Is it just me?
(I have been following the political crap since Trump. This for me is my first sense of hope).

OP posts:
MalletsMallets · 07/02/2017 14:10

I think he has remained impartial and i don't feel like what he said compromises his position.

I think he was spot on, his reasoning is not against republicans or democrats, Trump is inciting hate crimes and encouraging racism with his views. I don't think the houses of parliament are the place for such views, in the same way i wouldn't want abu hamza visiting the houses of parliament either.

I wouldn't want the speaker to be impartial to racists and sexists. I don't wan those views entertained.

Topseyt · 07/02/2017 14:11

I am short. More of a LibDem than a Tory though.

I would love to see Theresa May's very hastily issued State Visit invitation to Trump really go tits up.

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 07/02/2017 14:13

I would not like to actually indulge in a bit of insert tab A in slot B with John Bercow, OP...

but apart from that, I do (kind of) see where you're coming from.

As you were.

user1475253854 · 07/02/2017 14:14

I'm glad I'm not the only one for George Osborne Cara Wink

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 07/02/2017 14:16

Gideon??????

Now I'm too frightened to RTFT in case any poster is professing an urge to sit on Trump's face.

😵

Topseyt · 07/02/2017 14:19

Cara, he hasn't compromised his impartiality.

Many in all main parties have expressed similar views on Trump. For those reasons it is inappropriate for President Fart to address our Parliament. It is also inappropriate for him to be accorded a State Visit.

He is the biggest twat that I can remember ever making it to the Oval Office, and that is saying something.

PickledCauliflower · 07/02/2017 14:42

I think he has made a fool of himself. Here he is kissing the bum of the emir of Kuwait.

Tbf Berscow has double standards on this.

He shouldn't use his position to shout his opinions, he's supposed to be impartial.

How can anyone be impartial about racism and sexism? Do we seriously want a speaker who says that it's a matter of opinion about which is right and he respects the opinions of people who think racism and sexism are absolutely fine.

As for the classic "Look over there" stuff about other people who've been allowed to come to Parliament: so what? Take it for the sake of argument that Bercow was absolutely wrong to OK them. Does that mean he must now OK whatever racist, sexist disrespecter of the rule of law turns up, for ever more?

FloweringDeranger · 07/02/2017 15:07

George Osbourne?? I really have to go lie down in a darkened room after hearing that anyone can possibly like that. He had a speech on the failures of the northern powerhouse recently and its failure to retain graduates. Not produce, retain. All the schools' fault. Of course, what isn't?

I didn't know of Bercow's background, but I can't say I'm that surprised. For a House that does not believe in sexism the tories are doing a good job of increasing it. Alas for innocence, as I did like what he said.

Ken Clarke on the other hand has had a good reputation for decency for years.

Pettywoman · 07/02/2017 15:09

I agree he's allowed questionable leaders to address the Commons before but I applaud him for what he said about Trump. Can't say I find him hot though.

BoboChic · 07/02/2017 15:11

John Bercow sexy?!!!!

Short, self-satisfied...

FuckingSausageFingers · 07/02/2017 15:11

YABU

But I fancy David Walliams, so what do I know?

Megatherium · 07/02/2017 15:14

I've heard him speak at events supporting charities dealing with children re SEN - he has a son with autism. He gives up a fair amount of his time to helping them, and is very much on the side of the angels in terms of the need to give children the support they need. So I have a definite soft spot for him.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 07/02/2017 15:14

As for the classic "Look over there" stuff about other people who've been allowed to come to Parliament: so what?

Point is, he was the speaker at the time. So it is double standards or Berscow trying to make a name for himself

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 07/02/2017 15:14

Short, self-satisfied...

I really appreciate the fact that short is being used as a pejorative on this thread.

😑

Megatherium · 07/02/2017 15:21

But, Piglet, as I said: supposing it is double standards - does that automatically wrong for him to say no now to a racist sexist individual who doesn't respect the rule of law and the impartiality of the courts?

Megatherium · 07/02/2017 15:22

Sorry - does that make it automatically wrong ... etc etc

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 07/02/2017 15:23

does that automatically wrong for him to say no now to a racist sexist individual who doesn't respect the rule of law and the impartiality of the courts?

No, as long as he admits that he was wrong to not make a stand the other times, otherwise it does come accross as opportunitism.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/02/2017 15:26

A man speaking intelligently, boldly and with integrity is bloody attractive.

I would have done bad things to Jeremy Paxman after . Bad bad things.

MrsDesireeCarthorse · 07/02/2017 15:28

I've met him and was staggered at how charismatic he was. He has major sex appeal in person and it's just completely wrong.
