Sainsburys is posh, isn't it?

I mean it is toward the upper end of Poshness isn't it? Coming after Harrods food hall, Selfridge food hall, Booths, M&S, Waitrose then Sainsbury's.

Artisan shops and veg box deliveries probably come between M&S and Waitrose I reckon?

It's definitely posher than Tesco.

I don't know why I've done this op actually. I am so not unreasonable.

I see Sainsbos as a wanna be Waitrose. It is the Asda to Tesco's.

wictional · 06/02/2017 08:57

*"Yep
It doesn't even have its own brand value vodka."

It most certainly does.*

Yep! Back in my student days, Sainsbury's basics vodka was fondly referred to as "paint stripper" Grin

I always considered Sainsbury's to be at the posher end of supermarkets. It's definitely more expensive than Tesco/Asda/Morrisons!

tangerino · 06/02/2017 09:03

I don't really see M&S as a proper supermarket- it's a convenience shop. So much prepared stuff and hardly any proper ingredients. So not really comparable to Waitrose etc as it's filling a different role. If someone told me they did all their shopping at M&S I'd assume they only ate ready meals and prepared salads.

sopsmum · 06/02/2017 09:03

M&s just sells ready means and overpriced fruit and veg. It's for single retired people. . I think sainsbos is posher than Tesco but still a bit rubbish. I try Aldi in my posh car every now and again but always end up back in Waitrose, which has gone downhill since the free tea and coffee brought the riff raff in Wink

sopsmum · 06/02/2017 09:04

Asda is full of people buying 30 packs of crisps

Gwenhwyfar · 06/02/2017 09:05

"If food is out of date or soon goes off after buying then that is the fault of quality control of the store.
Complain to the store. "

Yes, if they go off before the date on the packet. Not much point complaining at the corner shops near me, they'll just shrug.
If they go off on the date on the packet and the customer just didn't check the date, that's the customer's fault.

DorkusDelonghi · 06/02/2017 09:20

Whole Foods Knightsbridge or Clapham Junction. I also shop in Planet Organic.

Just ate my aspirational Celtic Bakers Organic seeded sourdough raisin loaf for breakfast. It is so aspirational that it even comes in a little wooden tray. I feel a bit sad for it, honeydragon as a tweed wearer I am not. Poor loaf.

StickyMouse · 06/02/2017 09:25

In our town we only have Sainsburys or Waitrose so I shop in Sainsburys, on occasion I will go to another town and use Tesco or Asda and honestly don't really like them nor notice a difference in cost worth travelling the distance. However have made a mental note to get the red wine from Asda next time I find myself near to one.

StickyMouse · 06/02/2017 09:27

also Sainsburys has great offers on Gin, whats not to love!

Avoid the own brand Vodka and Gin though.....

WaitrosePigeon · 06/02/2017 09:28

So much prepared stuff and hardly any proper ingredients.

Eh?

BoboChic · 06/02/2017 09:31

Sainsbury's isn't posh. It's very middle of the road.

MuseumOfCurry · 06/02/2017 09:34

I have an unreasonable dislike of Sainsbury's. I feel like it's too big, too fluorescent, too orange.

IMO, Whole Foods and M&S (and only some of them) are the only 'posh' grocery stores, outside of Harrods et al.

treaclesoda · 06/02/2017 09:35

When I go to England I get supermarket envy. We don't have Aldi, Waitrose or Morrisons.

When I once visited a Booths I thought I was in supermarket heaven Grin

BoboChic · 06/02/2017 09:36

If you really want quality food, you need to buy from specialist retailers.

Lovelybangers · 06/02/2017 09:55

I think it's all down to location.

Where I live there are lots of supermarkets I can drive to within 15 minutes. Sainsburys in town X is much better than Sainsburys in town Y - the stores are of a similar age and size but the stock differs due to the area and clientele.

Similarly the Morrisons - it's in a bit of a down at heel small town - I used to cal lin on the way from school drop off for convenience but I didn't like it. The vegetables were over priced - and there weren't any Fair Trade bananas - the fishmongers counter were rubbish at gutting the mackerel too. Grin

Asda is also in a poorer area - I find it overpriced for my tastes.
Tesco is scruffy - it's a last resort for me.

Favourites for me are LIdl and Coop - I can get most of our shopping in LIdl - lots of good quality vegetables, bread etc. Anything else I can walk next door to the Coop and pick up there. We have 3 Co ops in our small town - one I can walk to in 5 minutes. I find that their food is really good - and I like to think a bit more ethical.

We do have a Marks food hall but it's further away so I don't tend to go there - when I do I don't find that their higher prices make for any better product than Lidl though.

BoboChic · 06/02/2017 10:06

Why even go to a supermarket? They are horrible. Online shopping for all the basics is a Godsend. Then go to a greengrocer, butcher, baker etc or a market or farm shop for high quality fresh produce.

I always do check the used by dates and always grab from the back or lift the first crate up. Doesnt make any difference if my Sainsburys are not going to be generous with used by dates. I will write a letter complaining.

I have never done a full shop in M&S. I have seen young married couples like myself in the store. They sell flour, spices, milk , eggs, bread, cooking basics. They might not have the range Tesco etc have. However, I couldn't limit myself to only one supermarket. They all have their pros and cons. I buy mostly brand names, so it makes sense to me to buy those kind of things at at a cheaper supermarket than Waitrose.

Also some supermarkets don't stock a particular brand or item you need. I have yet to taste any Waitrose brand food ( other than their chicken and stuffing sandwhich) that makes me think they need to be my main supermarket. I also don't get the free coffe. I haven't bothered looking for one when I have been in there. Surely if you are "posh" you can afford a cup at Costa!

DaisyQueen · 06/02/2017 10:25

I wouldn't say it was posh but it's definitely more expensive. My weekly shop costs 20% more there than other supermarkets. I don't live in a posh area and there's definitely no dress code, pyjamas seem acceptable to some people but that a whole different thread!

user1236789 · 06/02/2017 10:30

I agree Bobo, quite frankly that would be the ideal way to shop. I have my eye on a little market town with butchers, bakeries etc. If I move there, I would certainly shop that way.

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2017 10:31

The ideal way to shop is unfortunately the most time consuming.

Unluckycat1 · 06/02/2017 10:44

My local lidl is quite new and huge, very clean and civilized, attracts all sorts but plenty of the middle classes. I love it and do 95% of my shopping there, with the bits I can't get in waitrose.

When I lived in London I avoided lidl like the plague, they were all tiny and rammed with huge queues.

Unluckycat1 · 06/02/2017 10:46

Most Sainsburys I've been to are quieter and less bun fighty than tesco, asda and morrisons.

myfavouritecolourispurple · 06/02/2017 14:05

I am definitely not posh and I shop at Sainsburys.

I'm not sure any supermarket is posh. Having your own chef is posh.
