Sainsburys is posh, isn't it?

I mean it is toward the upper end of Poshness isn't it? Coming after Harrods food hall, Selfridge food hall, Booths, M&S, Waitrose then Sainsbury's.

Artisan shops and veg box deliveries probably come between M&S and Waitrose I reckon?

It's definitely posher than Tesco.

I don't know why I've done this op actually. I am so not unreasonable.

I never understand why people shop at posh supermarkets.

Even the posh folk round my way go to Lidls. And i totally resent the fact that Waitrose charge a pound for parking. WTF??
Waitrose is an aspirational supermarket imo.
But yanbu. Sainsburies is posh.

DorkusDelonghi · 06/02/2017 06:51

I shop at Ocado because it is the easiest.

Aspirational food? Really? Aspiring to what?

DorkusDelonghi · 06/02/2017 06:52

And here Waitrose charge £3.50 for the first hour's parking. Refunded if you spend £20 or more.

DoctorBeat · 06/02/2017 06:56

Farmers' market/farm shop
Waitrose
M&S
Sainsbury's
Lidl
Tesco
Morrisons/Asda
ALDI
Farm foods/Iceland

That's my ranking of poshness based on the supermarkets round ere. Though personally I think lidls own brand products are far better quality than Sainsbury's.

AQuietMind and others:

There's a new script on MN presumably to slow it down again:

That was meant to be presumably to slow it down again

I shop a lot at M&S and Waitrose, and Whole Foods when I can. (This isn't a stealth brag, I'm a homesick expat who isn't quite used to UK food yet. I spend way more than we can afford to on groceries right now!) Whole Foods is definitely the best but absurdly expensive. Waitrose has higher quality basic food than M&S and it is more of a "real" grocery store. At the M&S stores I've been to everything is pre-packaged and there's no meat counter, fish counter, etc., and you can't get a salad or something scooped fresh. I do think M&S has better prepared and semi-prepared items like salads, dinner items, desserts, and seasonal things. But if given a choice I would pick Waitrose. M&S just all feels like it was made and packed in a huge factory somewhere far far away. But for a quick, decent-quality meal when you don't really feel like cooking but don't want a takeaway it can't be beat.

Trainspotting1984 · 06/02/2017 07:18

Waitrose absolutely aspirational- their target market is the wannabe middle classes.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 06/02/2017 07:19

No, it's no more or less "posh" than Tesco.

M&S, Waitrose, Budgens all qualify as "posh" if you're going with that.
Tesco and Sainsbury's next.
I suppose I'd put Co-op, Safeways and Morrison's next but I was last in a Morrison's about 30 years ago, so they've probably changed a lot since then!
And then Iceland, Aldi and Lidl.

But in the end, it's not about "posh" - it's about "does it have what I need at an affordable price" - and if the answer's yes, then buy it, if not then go elsewhere.

everythingtoplayfor · 06/02/2017 07:19

I tried the cheaper supermarkets like Lidl and Morrisons but the fresh fruit and veg didn't stay fresh for long at all, so it was a false economy and less nutritious.

Tesco is okay for that actually and wine but the rest of the food is so processed so nothing we would buy.

We do go to Lidl to stock up on essentials like washing powder, nuts and seeds and pasta (at a quiet time and/or when we have time to queue for an extra 15 minutes), but Waitrose and M&S has consistently the best quality fruit and veg, in our experience.

Trainspotting1984 · 06/02/2017 07:20

Whole foods is incredibly over rated IMO and also the most disgustingly wasteful shop going- their displays of fresh fish etc are obscene and it's obvious they won't sell it before it goes off

It's not posh either (how can anything American be posh?!) it's just metropolitan & monied

HoneyDragon · 06/02/2017 07:21

Aspirational food? Really? Aspiring to what?

Dunno? Maybe foods ambition is to be taken home by someone wearing tweed?

everythingtoplayfor · 06/02/2017 07:24

Oh and Sainsbury's is quite good, ranked well above Tesco but below Waitrose and M&S. A good balance of quality vs. price in my experience but we don't have one near our new home

EastMidsMummy · 06/02/2017 07:40

It's...

Booths
Waitrose/M&S
Sainsbury's
Co-op
Tesco/Lidl
Asda/Aldi
Iceland

FACT.

Can we just note that Aldi regularly stocks horse-riding gear in the Special Buys aisle? They must sell it otherwise they'd have stopped by now, so Aldi has quite a market share in people who can afford to ride horses. Seems silly to rank Aldi at the bottom of the list.

Last week, they had reins!

DollyMcDolly · 06/02/2017 08:05

I don't think it's posh but I prefer it to Tesco or Asda. I won't go in to those stores at all.
When I started working at Sainsburys, I was asked by some co-workers where I shopped and I said Sainsburys and they said I must be posh and rich.
I actually only shop there because Ocado doesn't deliver to my area. I love Ocado and miss it a lot. It was cheaper than Sainsburys.

user1236789 · 06/02/2017 08:13

The closest supermarkets to me are at opposite directions but same driving distance are Sainsbury's and Asda. Everything else is right in town ( so too much effort lol). There are a few items I can only get at Asda and everytime I go there, I absolutely hate it. If DH is with me, he refuses to get out of the car. However he will happily go into Sainsbury's. While the atmosphere at Sainsbury's is an improvement on atmosphere, it's only marginally better and not worth paying more for. The cafe has badly stained teacups and often the toilets are all taped off. Last time I went, I saw rubbish in a trolley. However, the Sainsbury's trolleys don't need to be tokened as most people return them to the bay. You still encounter ASDA shoppers there and you still have morons that don't realise shopping aisles are traffic areas!

What I hate most about my local Sainsbury's is trying to buy fruit and veg that can last more than one or two days. I have purchased burger buns to find out of date once I got home and speciality loafs that have 5 day shelf life are going to be out of date on the day you buy them or following day.

I LOVE M&S food hall. Our Waitrose is on the small side, so doesn't impress me. I have tried some of their branded meals which were aweful. I would say M&S is the posh one over Waitrose and Sainsburys.

jay55 · 06/02/2017 08:19

I think Sainsbury's basics are the best value line. But it isn't posh, no supermarket is posh.

BillSykesDog · 06/02/2017 08:21

It's normal down south, posh up north.

Gwenhwyfar · 06/02/2017 08:28

" I have purchased burger buns to find out of date once I got home and speciality loafs that have 5 day shelf life are going to be out of date on the day you buy them or following day. "

Why don't you check the date before buying? You always have to get things from the back of the shelf.

I've found that a few corner shops have milk that goes off before the date on the bottle. That is infuriating.

Thinkingblonde · 06/02/2017 08:40

Sainsbury's built a huge supermarket with a huge car park near our town. It never opened and stands empty, tumbleweed blows across the car park, the Sainsbury's logos have been removed from the building, but it's obvious who owns it.
It is close to our football ground, suggestions were put forward to allow parking in the car park on match days but it was vetoed.
Maybe the area isn't posh enough?

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2017 08:42

I can ever understand people who don't check dates when buying fresh food. The longer dates are at the back if the shop has its stock rotation right.

londonrach · 06/02/2017 08:47

Which whole foods as was not impressed by the quality of the food id place it around morrisons. Now farmers markets can either be at the top of the list or at the bottom. Ive been to some amazing ones but also some awful ones. Quality control is hit and miss.

Thinkingblonde · 06/02/2017 08:50

If food is out of date or soon goes off after buying then that is the fault of quality control of the store.
Complain to the store.
I once bought some meat pies that were mouldy, they looked ok but tasted odd. I lifted the pastry lid and found mould under it. I took them straight back to the Co-op. The manager apologised, took my name and address. Three days later a van turns up at my door with a huge box of goodies from the shop.
