Sainsburys is posh, isn't it?

I mean it is toward the upper end of Poshness isn't it? Coming after Harrods food hall, Selfridge food hall, Booths, M&S, Waitrose then Sainsbury's.

Artisan shops and veg box deliveries probably come between M&S and Waitrose I reckon?

It's definitely posher than Tesco.

I don't know why I've done this op actually. I am so not unreasonable.

Actually the poshest supermarket I've ever been in was nearly 20 years ago as a student. A tiny Tesco Metro but it sold quail eggs and Krug (I don't even think most Waitroses sold those at the time).

And of the same vintage, apparently students at Imperial College shopped at the Harrods food hall as it had the cheapest milk in the area.

No idea whether any of that is still the case.

No idea why that double posted!

I wouldn't call it posh, but it sells a lot more higher end and higher welfare products than ASDA and Tesco. It's not as expensive as Tesco, though.

I prefer Morrisons over ASDA and Tesco for a shite teenfood shop. Like Sainsburys, the instore experience is far more civilised, though I usually do my Sainsburys shop online.

Supermarkets are never posh

DorkusDelonghi · 05/02/2017 23:18

Can you get groceries delivered, wizard?

gamerwidow · 05/02/2017 23:23

Sainsbury's is not posh, ours has an Argos which unless the gentry have started wearing Elizabeth Duke is definitely not posh.
It is more expensive than tescos but the quality and clientele are no better.

BringMeTea · 05/02/2017 23:28

Ihavebrillohair Way back you mentioned farmer's markets... I was visiting my dsis and we were in the local Asda. Bil spotted an ex colleague, they had a chat. Turned out he was buying up veg in Asda which he then went on to sell at a local 'market' as 'locally sourced organic'. Selling for hyped prices of course. This is in Bristol, in a particular area that has many folk that would see those words and buy it for that reason. I was shocked. Shock

ClementineWardrobe · 05/02/2017 23:32

Sainsbos is practically the same as Asda to me, there's so many similarities. Taste the difference is same as chosen by you, sainsbos and asda own brand is practically the same, sainsbos basic is same as Asda smart price. The homeware is better quality in sainsbos recently (they've upped the game there) but Asda do a better wider range of Indian/Polish/Carribean etc type food. All George clothes are cack, except basic bloke stuff. Sainsbos is a bit better, but you've got to search. The jackets and coats last winter were good. I mix both. Oh and Asda water free ham is good too.

FernetBranca · 05/02/2017 23:36

I'm in London and have a Sainsbury's Local between the station and home which means I go go, ooh at least once a day, to pick up random stuff I've forgotten or need for last minute food/recipe decisions.

French people describe charmingly how they do daily shopping , to meet their seasonal food needs. I'm guessing they do not trip with a wicker basket insouciantly slung over their arm into a small Sainsbury's Local.

Sainsbury's tentatively show they trust us (naive neighbourhood) by leaving the wine on open shelves but any bottle over £6.99 has a security cuff round it (still London).

It is functional. No more, no less. Definitely not posh. It has a very small World Foods section which includes mayonnaise. I wonder if the layout designer is a bit UKIP.

No, of course it's not embarrassing, I find it interesting!

p1nkflam1ngos · 05/02/2017 23:50

I stayed away from Sainsburys for years a) because there weren't really any near us and b) I thought it would be too posh/expensive for me. Now there's one a ten minute drive away, and it's less busy than our local Tesco, which is enormous, always mobbed, and it's impossible to get parked there. Our Sainsburys is slightly out of the way but has much better parking.

It's slightly more expensive, but it the only place I can get Fentimans Rose Lemonade, and their fancy fish fingers, so I'm stuck going there for the foreseeable future.

DorkusDelonghi · 05/02/2017 23:53

Oh, I do agree, Sainsbury's has the best fish fingers. If you must eat fish fingers, theirs are the best.

kerryob · 05/02/2017 23:53

I find Sainsbury's own food better than Tescos. Few new stores have opened in SW London and they're lovely and spaced out, nicer shopping experience. I've added a photo of the new store in Fulham. Asda in Clapham Junction is like a jumble sale, way over crowed with too many product lines I end up walking out as it irritates me and I don't have the patience! They've done the same to a few other stores which put me off shopping there.

Whole Foods is the most expensive/poshest store, very zen Smile they do amazing chocolate cake worth trying humm may need to pop in there

Sainsburys is posh, isn't it?
DontstepontheMomeRaths · 05/02/2017 23:58

I did once over hear a woman suggest I should've been in Asda's across the road 😃

I started a thread about it in my old username a few years ago.

At the time my DC were toddlers and throwing a fantastic tantrum in the trolley. I looked like a harassed lone parent. I do remember the woman distinctly looking at my wedding hand for the absent ring.

So Sainsbos Watford the customers think it's posh well just that one anyway

I now shop at Aldi 😉

Rugbyplayersarehot · 05/02/2017 23:59

No it really isn't

brasty · 06/02/2017 00:05

I would love a WholeFoods near us. I went to one in the US, and their take out salad bar was amazing.

Tartyflette · 06/02/2017 00:18

Well, if you're going on price then Selfridges food hall is eye-wateringly expensive, more so than Harrods IME.
Farm shop delis - ditto (£7 for a jar of artisanal piccallili anyone?). Farmers' markets vary around here, some are good value but one stall selling beef wanted £20+ for a few pieces of oxtail (well, there's only one tail per cow, dear) .
Sainsbos is not very posh here, it's on a newish middle-class (ish) estate but 'Trose in the town centre is deffo more upmarket . Best Trose around, and quite upmarket, is just outside Cambridge.

charlestrenet · 06/02/2017 00:24

Sainsbury cucumbers are 45p, four pints of milk is £1, loaf of bread 50p, pack of chicken drumsticks £1.20 etc etc - I wouldn't say it was posh. It has nicer food for similar price to Tesco - I honestly think that Tesco is way overpriced. It's not expensive, but you definitely don't get what you pay for. I get a fair few clothes from Sainsbury as their sales are good - dresses for work for a tenner sort of thing.

People saying that the food is the same quality as cheaper labels because both are made in the same factory - not true I'm afraid. Of course factories make food for lots of different retailers from the same production lines but the quality and recipes do differ. I know this because I've worked in them.

WildBelle · 06/02/2017 00:34

Sainsbury's is ok.

Keeps the riff-raff out of Waitrose.

DorkusDelonghi · 06/02/2017 06:29

I like WholeFoods as well bratsy

frumpet · 06/02/2017 06:32

We don't have a tesco here so cannot comment on it .

Booths/Waitrose - often have really good offers on
Sainsburys - tend to do core shop here
Morrisons - kids t-shirts are fab , no annoying labels and wash brilliantly
Asda- opposite direction to me so rarely visit
Lidl/Aldi - you get a lot of the posh types stocking up on decent wine and nibbles from here .

Trainspotting1984 · 06/02/2017 06:35

Mind you fernet the sainsburys in Pimlico used to be very classy (but it is Pimlico) it's a bit dated now, was set out like a farmers market which were the THING in 2005 (and still are in Cambridge it seems)
