AIBU to think double barrel surnames all sound stupid and there's just no need for it?

I realise I will offend all you double barrellers
But why?
Do you realise it's a mouthful and makes you look like you're trying to be some kind of lord or lady?
What's wrong with one surname?
When I marry my OH i'lol take his surname. I won't just add it to mine and cause an unnecessarly long name to have to say/write/spell.

I think they make you look like a pleb.

Dd has very posh DB name.

Don't use it in everyday life as we shorten everything

We aren't married though and no way was she just having DP's
The only time I see it in its full glory is when it Bings up on the big screen at Dr's. Have to remind myself it's her.
Not a 'pleb' though.
Cheers for that.

danTDM · 05/02/2017 11:58

Spain and Italy it is the law for children to have both surnames of parents.

elQuintoConyo · 05/02/2017 11:59

Tell that to Ralph Twistleton-Wickham-Feinnes as he spanks you

FiveGoMadInDorset · 05/02/2017 11:59

We joined surnames when we got married, but then again I got married in the family castle in the family estate so not sure that I achieved pleb status

228agreenend · 05/02/2017 12:00

I understand why parents want to double barrel, their names, so the child has both surnames, although I grew up with only posh people have the two surnames.

However, what happens when a double-barrelled surname person wants to marry another double-barrelled surname-r - do you quadruple the surname?!

Mr and Mrs Montgomery-Smith-Windsor-Middleton!Grin

Maudlinmaud · 05/02/2017 12:01

Oh I'm not offended op! But you are quite rude. My family surname would have died out and I wasn't going to let that happen.

'With children it just makes me think that the Dad had no desire to marry.'

Really? It makes me think that the couple recognise the Mother's name is of equal importance.

Magzmarsh · 05/02/2017 12:02

I know someone who double barrelled with her dh surname. Both names have 4 sylllables, and a double consonant sound. It's quite possibly the crappest, most unwieldy name I've ever heard, she says her dc get a lot of stick for it.

A guy at school (35 years ago) had one and he just got called "hyphen" 😁

Bambambini · 05/02/2017 12:02

"I'm far more judgy of women who give up their own name and take their husbands without a second thought. Each to their own though."

My lovely niece and all her friends have gotten married the last few years - all mid 20's well educated with professional careers. Only one kept their name. I was surprised the others seemed to have given it no thought but couldn't wait to use their husband's name.

SonyaGluck · 05/02/2017 12:04

I think they make you look like a pleb.

These two parts of your post are a little contradictory are they not, OP? Were you just sounding off a little or do you not know what pleb means ?

PleaseStopTalkingAtMe · 05/02/2017 12:04

Are two short names double-barrelled better or worse than one really long name?

Emmageddon · 05/02/2017 12:04

Why on earth does it bother you so much? It's only a name, it's not indicative of anything else.

Double-barreled first names however...Grin

schokolade · 05/02/2017 12:05

The kids do whatever they want with their name. Obviously no one wants 16 names and they don't exist so it's not a problem...

I really don't care what anyone thinks of my name. But I answer these threads in the hope that my DD and grand daughters don't have to deal with this shit.

schokolade · 05/02/2017 12:07

My title is Dr. Bet that annoys you too OP.

OwlinaTree · 05/02/2017 12:10

If you both have a double barrelled name the woman would carry her mother's name forward and the man would carry his father's name forward.

Makes sense!

user1467976192 · 05/02/2017 12:10

Trinity if I double barrelled it would essentially be the same name twice, his the English version, mine the polish

MaudOnceMore · 05/02/2017 12:11

Exactly, schokolade. What my offspring do with their surname if and when they marry is entirely up to them. As it was for me. Hello modernity.

SelfObsessionHoney · 05/02/2017 12:13

My child will be having both mine and my partners surname, as I have no intention of taking his name if I do decide to ever marry him.
And my surname is a traditional girls first name. Just to make it extra confusing.

As for my child getting married, well I would hope that they would engage their brain and choose what they wanted their name to be upon marriage, be that dropping part, all or none of it.

SharkBastard · 05/02/2017 12:13

My DD has a double barrelled surname because she had my maiden name as I was a lone parent, thenIi got married and asked if she wanted to change her surname, she said no but would like my married name too. She's just greedy.

This new baby I'm having will be double barrelled like his sister cause I'm a cunt like that clearly Grin

mambono5 · 05/02/2017 12:13

If you both have a double barrelled name the woman would carry her mother's name forward and the man would carry his father's name forward.

Says who? Completely negate the reason for double-barreling names in the first place. Why would my son then chose his father name and not mine?

Only1scoop · 05/02/2017 12:14

I think Op's a wee bit jealous

Phantommanflinger · 05/02/2017 12:14

Your opinion makes you sound like a complete dick and I don't have a double barrelled surname.

NauticalDisaster · 05/02/2017 12:14

YABU, here's your Biscuit

Willyoujustbequiet · 05/02/2017 12:14

I think your stupid post makes you look like a pleb but hey ho
