..to prefer to be an expectant mother rather than a pregnant person?

The BMA has advised doctors not to refer to an expectant mother but to a pregnant person. Leaving aside the obvious question as to whether somebody who is trans-gender and pregnant is not also going to be a mother, do other people think I am being unduly sensitive when I say, that if either term has to be used, I would still prefer to be referred to as an expectant mother (if we get round to DC6)?

No. It is in fact perfectly possible for a woman to be a police officer.

Not a policewoman?

They should be a female police officer?

So, you are for distinguishing words sometimes and sometimes there should be no reference to your sex whatsoever. Hmm

Did they also specify that if a male partner accompanies their pregnant person partner to the doctors what they should be called? non-pregnant person? or are they allowed to be an expectant father still?

And if the latter is the case, if a female partner accompanies their pregnant person partner to the doctors, logic could/would dictate they then become an expectant mother - except they wouldn't be and the person who was the actual expectant mother couldn't be called that... Confused Guess they would go with non-pregnant person too.

I do think it's sad that given there is only one person that this affects in the UK at the moment, their first reaction is to jump in and wipe out something that gives many new mothers* a real pleasure and excitement to be called, rather than just saying to be sensible and if anybody who is pregnant doesn't want to be called that then to find out what they do want to be called, and to ensure that computer systems have some sensible options like pregnant person and surrogate mother/person, and 'other' so that all bases are covered.

*I realise too that many new mothers (sorry, pregnant people) won't care or notice or would just expect to be called the expectant mum as a standard, commonly-understood, factual description of the themselves when discussing their pregnancy with medical professionals.

CripsSandwiches · 30/01/2017 12:36

YABU. Why do you care? Both terms are accurate in your case so stop throwing a hissy fit and wasting medical professionals time.

Manumission · 30/01/2017 12:38

Being offended once in a while won't actually kill you. Women give birth, men don't. Be offended by that if you like, but don't expect people to lie and say it's not the truth.

Amen to that.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 30/01/2017 12:38

its a fucking storm in as teacup, and massively fuelled by the Daily Mail.

No one is going to follow this ruling...... chill

stop throwing a hissy fit

Interesting that the insults are still gendered Smile

OhhBetty · 30/01/2017 12:42

This wouldn't have bothered me when O was pregnant. However, what do fathers get called? Plus, I'm forever being asked about what my husband does etc. I'm a single mum and have never been married so maybe they should stop that too? I think efforts could be better used elsewhere.

tartansnowman · 30/01/2017 12:43

What do they call you after you've given birth? The post natal person?

CripsSandwiches · 30/01/2017 12:44

Interesting that the insults are still gendered

There was no mention of gender in that insult at all - that assumption was all yours.

Does there have to be a trans bashing thread on mumsnet every week? I have literally met no one in my life that would care that they were referred to as a pregnant person by a medical professional. I don't believe for a second the OP is genuinely upset by the particular (accurate) term she's referred to by medical professionals. She's just annoyed that she feels a minority group is getting some concessions.

Manumission · 30/01/2017 12:46

Yes became "hissy fit" is so often aimed at men isn't it?

Viviennemary · 30/01/2017 12:47

Lets do away with boy girl man woman mother father aunt uncle. Ban the lot. And folk will still find something to whine about.

GoesDownLikeACupOfColdSick · 30/01/2017 12:47

For me, something that is very important to some people has gone too far. It's going to get more and more difficult to take people seriously when this sort of bollocks is being spouted in an apparent attempt to help!

thenotsoquiet · 30/01/2017 12:48

a) We don't need five billion different threads on this. MN hates trans people WE GET IT.

b) The overwhelming majority of trans people have zero objection to this or any of the other nonsense that's constantly trotted out. It's only a handful of attention-seeking extremists who do NOT represent most trans people spreading this "don't say mothers" nonsense.

Viviennemary · 30/01/2017 12:48

And what about MN. It should be PN.

OneInFiveBillion · 30/01/2017 12:48

The thing is Crisp, it's fine and admirable if the minority group get some concessions. But what about the majority group? Why should it have to affect them? They can do both!

Manumission · 30/01/2017 12:48

Crips you're not coming across as overly bright.

Where is the "bashing" on this thread? Who's been bashed? Women being clear about their own preferences for things relating to them isn't bashing.

Other sexes and genders can have their own preferences.

"Surrogate is short for surrogate mother!" It's been over 9 years since my most recent surrogate pregnancy but I never used the term mother to describe myself during the process, I used 'gestational surrogate'. It doesn't stop me being a woman and for pregnancy to be a biologically female act though.

Servicesupportforall · 30/01/2017 12:53

What manumission says.

tartansnowman · 30/01/2017 12:54

You can describe yourself however you like Old Boots.

ElfingHeck · 30/01/2017 12:55

Either is better than elderly primagravida

wettunwindee · 30/01/2017 12:59

or are they allowed to be an expectant father still?

DH took great delight in saying "we're pregnant", especially during the latter stages where I was a waddling, sore, tired mess. He was always careful to do it at arm's length though!

MN hates trans people WE GET IT.

I'll be honest, I was surprised to learn it. Absolutely true though. I'm sure not all of us / them do. Just the vocal minority who flock to this type of thread cf. women in guides and men in prison.

@manumission

don't be a dick
stupid bastard
wanker
prick
arsehole
fucker
motherfucker

etc

interesting? As a linguist, I still struggle to find the "gendering" of insults interesting. The etymology perhaps, but that's my inner child giggling at using obscenities in academia.

Other sexes and genders can have their own preferences.

But can they, without them being decried as exclusionary or unfair or misogynistic?

Threads like this confirm one sad inalienable truth about mankind. Any group will look to promote disdain of another.
