AIBU... MIL and Finger Food

Hi all!

I know, it's another MIL one! But I genuinely don't think I'm doing anything wrong!

Yesterday I sent MIL some lovely pictures of DD eating foods! I'm so proud at how well she's doing! She's having 3 meals a day and loving it.

Anyway she's only just replied today saying how lovely but why am I not blending her food? I said I don't think there's a need as she's managing really well and chewing. She said I was being very naive and putting baby at risk for no reason! I got a bit annoyed and said well actually chewing is good for her and help with language development Blush, she hasn't replied.

AIBU? Should I really be blending all of DDs food?

I really don't see the problem as she's eating well! DD is having what we're having and eating as a family. Some examples of what she's had so far;

Weetabix
Risk
Toast
Ham sandwich
Pasta broccoli cheese
Pasta and meat balls
Lots of different fruits
Carrot sticks
Peas
Cauliflower
Mash

YABU if your DD is 4 months old.

LouBlue1507 · 28/01/2017 19:32

DD is 6 months old and it's my health visitor who's suggested three meals a day!

Your MIL is so silly - the natural consequence of her text is that you won't send her photos now.

Grumpbum · 28/01/2017 19:33

Ignore! My MIL used to ask similar via Facebook etc and once we visited and she saw him suck the life out of a piece of steak she started saying how sensible it was

Elllicam · 28/01/2017 19:33

Depends on her age, if over 6 months baby led weaning is great.

OwlinaTree · 28/01/2017 19:33

Sounds like a stelth boast!! Grin

Elllicam · 28/01/2017 19:33

Sorry cross post Smile

KateDaniels2 · 28/01/2017 19:33

How old is the baby?

LavenderDoll · 28/01/2017 19:34

How old is baby?

CatsCantFlyFast · 28/01/2017 19:34

Neither of you are being unreasonable. Her perspective is that the advice when she did weaning was purée and she will be concerned about the risk of choking. Things have changed but she's not aware of that. Take her a nhs booklet or print out on weaning advice now and about blw and help educate her to understand the way you are doing it and why. Then she can get involved and excited without concern

Twopeapods · 28/01/2017 19:34

How old is your DD? I know some people get on fine with baby led weaning.
My DD1 was a very bad choker but DD2 was better but we still blended things for a while. I suppose it's what works best for you.

IamScarfaceClaw · 28/01/2017 19:34

How old Is DD?
My DD eats only finger food at home, to the extent that she eats cereal/soup with her hands (it's becoming a bit tiresome now she is 14m)
But MIL doesn't understand this, so when she is there DD is spoon fed, it's not a problem for me, do things your own way and don't bother too much about MILs methods.

KateDaniels2 · 28/01/2017 19:35

3 meals at 6 months sounds a bit kuchm but thays going off my experience with my own children.

I get she is c9ncerned about chocking hazards. I would just ignore. Not a big deal. She is concerned, you are not.

Stripeyblanket · 28/01/2017 19:35

6 months and BLW sounds like you're doing a sterling job to me. Maybe give her some up to date research in BLW to educate her old fashioned views.

BoredOnMatLeave · 28/01/2017 19:35

Send her a baby led weaning book. She sounds like a nightmare OP

HookandSwan · 28/01/2017 19:35

I'm currently nannying for a gorgeous baby who at 10 months refuses to eat any lumps! Keep doing what your doing if it's working for you.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 28/01/2017 19:35

Just reply to say the advice now is to baby led wean, which means finger food from day 1. She's not being rude. She's trying to be helpful but isn't up to date with guidelines.

MoreThanUs · 28/01/2017 19:35

I agree with Owl. You know this is absolutely fine.
Well done on the great eating though!

Screwinthetuna · 28/01/2017 19:36

It was probably the norm when your MIL had babies to blend their food, that's why.

LouBlue1507 · 28/01/2017 19:38

Thanks for your reassurance. I'm really struggling with PND and anxiety atm so I doubt myself with everything!

Aww you sound like your doing a really good job. At 6 months food is a learning experience. I would suggest doing a first aid course if you haven't already.

Heirhelp · 28/01/2017 19:43

BLW. My DD loves it. She is 8 1/2 months and other than the occasional prune or pear fruit pouch (for constipation) she has not had anything puréed.

Then down sides are the mess, the time is take DD and I can't eat anything without her thinking she is entitled to some. There are loads of positives that I am sure you have discovered for yourself.

Look carefully at the ingredients on the rusk packets as they tend to be full of sugar. That is fine is you are happy with it though.

Palegreenstars · 28/01/2017 19:44

What does she think people did before blenders. Baby Led Weaning isn't a new concept. Ignore her.

Floggingmolly · 28/01/2017 19:44

You give your 6 month old a ham sandwich?

BertrandRussell · 28/01/2017 19:46

If she's eating that and is just 6 months then you started too soon. If she's nearly 7 months that's probably OK. But maybe give mil a book on BLW to reassure her?
