I know he has a lot of support! That's why it's even more important for everyone else to be united in speaking out. We need all the help we can get.

merrymouse · 29/01/2017 10:54

Boycotting America rather than specifically Trump would play into his hands.

MycatsaPirate · 29/01/2017 10:55

Just signed the petition to prevent him seeing our Queen. The numbers are rocketing.

I can't imagine how she would feel knowing she had to host and be nice to that man.

Heartening scenes at JFK last night and today. Absolutely wonderful to see Immigration Lawyers down there holding banners up for those who need help, to see such huge crowds showing support for muslims. Bloody wonderful human beings.

Important to note that number of people detained in US airports is small compared to number who can't or won't travel until this is resolved
Trump's inner circle, including Bannon, overruled the DHS and decidd that the order applied to green card holders

MsHooliesCardigan · 29/01/2017 10:58

I'm hoping that the fact he has gone straight into Dictator/Fascist mode will be his undoing. There have been lots of internet posts about Hitler not coming to power promising to build gas chambers, how it was all about making Germany great again. If Trump had any political nous, he would have started his Presidency by toning down his act, acting like an actual President and bringing in fairly incontroversial legislation to lull people into a false sense of security and make them think that he won't be as bad as his opponents thought he would. Instead, people around the world are sitting with their jaws on the floor and thinking 'Fucking hell, he's actually WORSE than I thought he'd be!!!'

Formerpigwrestler9 · 29/01/2017 10:58

everything is in motion and no one can predict where it will all land, long term or short term

merrymouse · 29/01/2017 10:59

I agree Squishy - the people who have the power to turn this around are Trump voters and republicans.

The Republican Party doesn't like Trump, but he can give them the keys to the Whitehouse, perhaps for the next 8 years.

They are unlikely to turn on him while they still feel that they can use him.

Peregrina · 29/01/2017 10:59

I have cribbed bits of your letter to, borntobequiet
Here is mine:
I write to you yet again, the issue I am about to write about is too important to be ignored. I am writing to express my concern about the current state of affairs in the US and our Government's reaction to it.

Mr Trump's administration has banned immigration from a number of countries, on the grounds of prevention of terrorism; to date these are countries whose citizens have not committed terrorist atrocities in the USA. This affects a number of British citizens who hold dual nationality or who were born in those countries. The Conservative MP for Stratford upon Avon is one. So is our much celebrated Olympian Mo Farah, whose achievements have brought much kudos to this country and is an inspiration to young people.

Mrs May was extremely reluctant to comment on this, whilst in Turkey, having had to have a statement dragged out of her eventually that the US immigration policy was their own matter. According to a statement on the BBC website, she eventually stated that she does "not agree" with Donald Trump's refugee ban and will appeal to the US if it affects British citizens. The suggestion here is that racist immigration policies are acceptable to her if the citizens involved are not British. This is not good enough. I would have liked to see her condemn it in the strongest possible terms.

The parallels in the US with the rise of Hitler in the 1930s are far too striking to be ignored. Does Mrs May want to be seen as a latter-day Appeaser? I found pictures of her hand in hand with the self confessed sexual predator and racist Trump sickening and too reminiscent of the hapless Neville Chamberlain on his return from Munich.

We are in tremendous danger from this horrific state of affairs and I hope the Conservative Parliamentary Party will make it clear to the Prime Minister that we have a moral duty to tell the Americans that no trade deals will be forthcoming with such a repugnant US Administration, one that silences its scientists, encourages religious and racial hatred and wishes to remove women's rights to reproductive medicine - especially as we are most unlikely to benefit from any agreement that enables US companies to move in on our much loved NHS. There will be no credit in being a global leader if that lead is to fascism.

In the years to come I do not wish my grandchildren and great grandchildren to ask why I did nothing, when I foresaw a slide towards fascism. I will stand up to be counted. I ask you to examine your own conscience too.

In Feb 2016, Mike Flynn (National Security Adviser) sent out a tweet saying "Fear of Muslims is RATIONAL...... " with all sorts of propaganda.

AndHoldTheBun · 29/01/2017 11:01

Just caught up on this thread, and the grim happenings overnight. Dear god, Steve Bannon, an actual neo-nazi, given such power. It would be laughable if it weren't so fucking scary.

Things are moving unbelievably fast, it's hard to keep up with it all Sad

Thanks to all those linking twitter, news articles etc all together on one place in this beautiful thread!

Airbnb are making a stand, as well as making a positive offer of help.

This is awful.

I only hope that those who couldn't bother with installing fire alarms, planning exit routes or put out the candles, will realise their mistake, take responsibility for it, acquire more critical thinking and start looking at history a bit more.

And do something now to help fix the mess they got the rest in.

Spare a thought for those who campained for the fire alarms and fire proofing and now have to deal with this mess.

Sometimes it takes something like this for things to change for the better. Shame about those caught in the middle.

Both British Airways and Virgin airlines have said they will refund those affect by the #immigrationban www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/01/29/donald-trumps-ban-refugees-us-president-insists-policy-not-against/

BigBadgers · 29/01/2017 11:10

I have just sent my message to my local MP. He is conservative and I don't usually have much time for him, but I had to do something! Now is the time for him to start acting like a reasonable human being.

StumblyMonkey · 29/01/2017 11:10

The problem is May will dance with the devil for nothing.

Trump doesn't give one shit about Britain or any other country. He is playing May for a fool and I imagine she knows it but also knows there's little other option than to continue.

He will string out hopes of a decent trade deal ONLY because he wants us to appear to back his other strategies and to make other EU countries consider leaving as a united Europe is a threat to his plans and a fragmented one isn't. Mainly because he's a puppet for Steve Bannon and others and that's what he wants....

Trump's EO also states that no one with "hostile attitudes" toward the US can enter. Expect this to be used broadly by border agents.

Roomba · 29/01/2017 11:12

*I've just asked DS "what else do you want?".
Reply: "a small loan of 1 million dollars"

Trump may be a hot subject in this household.grin*

Ha! That is almost identical to a conversation I had with DS1 the other day. He is 11 and is so appalled by Trump that he insists we put the news on at 6pm daily so that he can rant at the TV. He has never asked for the news on in his life before, he usually makes me switch it off!

BigBadgers · 29/01/2017 11:12

Great news from airbnb. I am actually surprised and impressed. Also good to hear British Airways and Virgin are acting is a responsible manner.
