Loving the Rick Ashley poster.

I know Trump is awful but I'm not surprised he got voted in. I think it's partly a rebellion by people fed up with bland-I-actually-did-nothing-Obama.

GingerIvy · 29/01/2017 10:19

There is discussion that Trump's twitter account could be shut down as against T&Cs, however, that Bannon could force twitter to shut down, effectively making it more difficult for people to fight back? Good luck trying to shut down facebook, as he's already angry.

borntobequiet · 29/01/2017 10:19

Very happy for my email to be used!

Also think that disputes re Brexit not helpful here (strong Remainer).

Peregrina · 29/01/2017 10:19

I'm hoping he comes on a state visit and Liz will fain illness,.....
Or they will trot out a minor Royal - Prince Michael of Kent perhaps?

Chippednailvarnishing · 29/01/2017 10:20

The Us have elected an isolationist President. If we leave the EU whilst he is still pursuing a fascist agenda we will be following his lead, consciously or otherwise.

All those people who supported Farage chose to ignore Farage's behaviour. You only have to listen to that interview with James O'Brien to back this up.

M0stlyHet · 29/01/2017 10:20

squishy: "... it is assumed that the vote for leave was a vote for whatever the hard right want it to be.
I know that not all leavers are a homogenous group. But the people in charge of executing Brexit are acting as though they are."

This - a 100 times this! Ashcroft's poll the day after the referendum suggested that immigration was not the top issue for the majority of leave voters, yet May and Rudd act as if only pandering to the worst excesses of UKIP will keep them in power. (Rudd in particular came into my workplace to campaign for "Remain" then as home secretary post referendum suggested a register of all non-British employees to see which employers weren't sufficiently nationalist... she is a vile person).

snapcrap · 29/01/2017 10:20

squishy thanks for saying that but with respect voices like mine are NOT and were not absent from Brexit discussions.

Myself, my husband, people I know that voted Leave (in an area of overwhelming Remain) have tried on numerous occasions to debate seriously and sensibly. In fact we have had sensible, interesting debates where friends have listened and understood our point of view and accepted it's not about racism. Then those friends have been on social media the next day shrieking about the racist, ignorant Brexiteers who just want to close our borders to immigrants.

It's totally demoralising and frustrating.

17 million people in this country or not stupid, or ignorant, or racist. 17 million people were not hoodwinked because of Nigel Farage (he was a complete irrelevance as far as I'm concerned). 17 million people did not vote without understanding what they were voting for.

GingerIvy · 29/01/2017 10:21

But Obama was limited by a Republican Congress that stalled and stopped every good thing he tried to do, even if stopping it was a detriment to the country. It's the fault of the Congress that Obama was unable to put much through. He did some EOs, but every time he did them, the Republicans went nuts, claiming he was going around Congress. Note their silence now. Oh, the irony.

merrymouse · 29/01/2017 10:21

It could hardly take ALL countries at the same time.

The thing is, 2 years ago, or even really 6 months ago the idea that Trump would become president would have seemed as likely as some evil over Lord taking over the EU. Even in November we were being reassured that Trump shouldn't be taken literally. Even now it doesn't seem real.

As I said, I am a Remainer, but while I think it's fair to say that Leavers should always have been worried about the effect of a US trade deal on the NHS, (even with a democrat in charge), I don't think it's fair to expect them to have predicted Trump.

The reality is that only a minority voted for Nigel Farage's Brexit. (Because half voted remain and a lot of leavers hate Farage). We need unity to stand up to Trump.

Holliewantstobehot · 29/01/2017 10:22

Finally caught up on these beautiful threads. I almost feel like this cannot be real. I am so ashamed of Theresa's stance on all of this. If you have a chance to watch there is a film called Good on BBC iPlayer which shows how the Holocaust happened slowly little by little. For people saying comparisons are ridiculous these things don't go from 1 to 100 overnight. They happen bit by bit.

Chipped I did not and do not 'follow Farage'. I, and many many others, voted despite Farage. But of course what I say won't make a jot of difference. People just want the Brexiteers to be racist and stupid because Remainers are so angry and need to hit out against someone and something. I get the genuine fear and anger if you dearly wanted to remain in the EU but the aspersions cast against the 'enemy' are blind and unhelpful.

GingerIvy · 29/01/2017 10:25

In shock. There is a DEFEND DONALD TRUMP video advert that has been playing in the US. Seriously. Gives a phone number and everything. I can't seem to link it. urgh.

Peregrina · 29/01/2017 10:25

17 million people did not vote without understanding what they were voting for.

I am sure they didn't. I have Leaver friends who are thoughtful individuals. But it only needed a million or so to follow Farage and vote blindly, for the result we got. Farage and Johnson, who can't usually keep their mouths shut, are quiet. Where is Gove, after the fawning interview of a couple of weeks ago?

I hope a lot of people - no matter if they voted Leave or Remain - speak up about this. Because what #theresatheappeaser is doing is because of Brexit and the need to sell the UK to anyone

If we were in the EU, our voice would be much stronger. I hope the other EU leaders step up and call him and her out.

It could hardly take ALL countries at the same time.

France and Germany both have elections coming up and are seeing growing support for some scary as fuck right wing parties. If they were to get into power this would change the EU beyond recognition. It would not be the organisation I voted to remain in. I believe many other countries are facing the same challenge, so while it may not take ALL countries there is a very real danger it could take a number of key ones.

Angela Merkel has criticised Donald Trump's ban on some Muslim immigration, saying it is "not justified to put people from a specific background or faith under general suspicion" to combat terrorism.

From a NYT article - THIS is what has been going on in the US.

Consider what just happened in North Carolina. The voters made a clear choice, electing a Democratic governor. The Republican legislature didn’t openly overturn the result — not this time, anyway — but it effectively stripped the governor’s office of power, ensuring that the will of the voters wouldn’t actually matter.
