My DH has his driving test today. AIBU?

My DH is mid 30's and last year decided that he would like to learn to drive. He's been having lessons and his test is today.

He mentioned to me yesterday that if he passes he would like to take the DC's to the park (in the car) whilst I'm at work over the weekend. I dropped into the conversation that I would prefer him not to go out with the kids alone in the car until he has had some experience at driving. He didn't reply to that but looked abit hurt.

He then said if he passes he would like to drive our car, on his own, around town to get used to the car. We bought a new large car (think 4x4 size) about 8 months ago and it is our pride and joy. I've been with him in this car when he's been practising his manoeuvres and he has struggled because he found the car too big (the car he's been having lessons in is a little clio).

AIBU to say not to take the kids out alone and that I would prefer him not to take the car out alone until he's had some experience with driving a car of that size?? I feel like I'm pissing on his bonfire abit and if he comes back all joyous that he's passed and wants to take the car for a spin what do I say?!?!

What exactly do you think will happen with the kids around town?

I'd have told my husband to fuck off if he told me not to drive what I wanted, who I wanted, when I wanted if I felt like it.

It does sound weird that your husband seems to be asking your permission to drive the family car, to buy his own car and to drive the children.

Lweji · 27/01/2017 16:35

I'd tell him he needs to have driven for a month to get real life experience before he takes the kids

"Needs"? Really?
Because you don't trust his judgement?
Is he a child?

FizzBombBathTime · 27/01/2017 16:37

Anyone else desperate to know what the very precious and expensive car is?!

LightastheBreeze · 27/01/2017 16:38

Well I did wonder...

justdontevenfuckingstart · 27/01/2017 16:40

To be honest DD1 passed her test and picked her car up last week. She then picked her sister up and they went out and about. I was scared as fuck all day. I don't think it's unreasonable to worry about this.

DJKKSlider · 27/01/2017 16:41

Thankyou for all the sensible responses. To all the nasty comments

I had my kids in the car a couple of times when I was learning to drive and very close to passing. It was only on quiet roads.

I am sure that will get me flamed but I would not have taken the risk unless I knew I was capable.

YABU OP. If my husband had told me I couldn't drive the kids when I passed my test I would have laughed at him.

FizzBombBathTime · 27/01/2017 16:42

tractor? Double decker bus?

Whatthefreakinwhatnow · 27/01/2017 16:42

The husband is probably at Audi now buying his own nice car, as a nice big screw you to the OP! 😂😂

Llanali · 27/01/2017 16:43

No I want to know what this car is!!

In my line of work we all drive BMW/Audi/Merc.
There are no minimal length of driving license holding periods. None.
There are similarly no minimum length of time required before taking an HGV license or towing licence.

roundtable · 27/01/2017 16:44

My guess is an Audi Q7 on lease maybe?

I know a family who have one and they are very cautious about driving/curbing/damaging it. They recently had some damage to it and it cost thousands to sort out.

In those circumstances I would understand in theory why, but I'm very much in the don't buy what you can't afford to replace category. Hence driving an old heap. Grin

Well done to your dh.

Gileswithachainsaw · 27/01/2017 16:45

@whatthefreakinwhatnow

Hopefully buying a 2 seater. Well if he can't drive his kids about he may as well get the car he wants and pp can carry on as she is

FizzBombBathTime · 27/01/2017 16:45

Nah, he bought this

My DH has his driving test today. AIBU?
Lweji · 27/01/2017 16:46

Notice on Driving Licence:

Only valid for vehicles larger than a Nissan Micra or children until the holder has had 10 years of safe driving with no accidents or claims.

FizzBombBathTime · 27/01/2017 16:46

My guess is an Audi Q7 on lease maybe?

If it is, he probably doesn't want to drive it anyway. You're saving him a job op Grin

Lweji · 27/01/2017 16:47

Long trips: No, you better drive, honey, I'm not trustworthy.

OnionKnight · 27/01/2017 16:47

You sound controlling OP.

FizzBombBathTime · 27/01/2017 16:47

Lweji you forgot

And when your wife has deemed you able enough

PurpleDaisies · 27/01/2017 16:48

Worry, fine. To stop him taking the children out, not fine.

Gileswithachainsaw · 27/01/2017 16:49

6 months later

"Aibu to think my dh is selfish. He wont take the kids anywhere and deliberately chose a car which means we can't even fit shopping in the boot. So sick of being the taxi driver"

Lweji · 27/01/2017 16:50

JustAnotherPoster00

Will that first car be the new official POTUS car?

Whatthefreakinwhatnow · 27/01/2017 16:53

Giles 😂😂😂😂

If DP said I couldn't be trusted to drive with my kids, I'd probably strop off and buy a smart car or little sports number to make a point! I'm usually pretty laid back but if my own bloody DP insinuated I wasn't capable of keeping my own kids safe, I'd be livid!

FizzBombBathTime · 27/01/2017 16:54

just 😂

I need that car in my life

MrsDc7 · 27/01/2017 16:54

Lweji
What a ridiculous comment. No he's not a child but he is a completely inexperienced driver. It's not unreasonable to ask him to get a bit of experience making judgements etc without the safety net of the driving instructor there before he drives their children. You can get off your high horse now if you don't mind
