To only wash uniform...

Once a week? Confused

DS (reception age) went to a friends after school yesterday. The night before I messaged the mum to ask what she wanted me to send clothes wise. She said she would just keep them in their uniforms as it saves on the washing pile.

Normally when we get in from school DS changes into t-shirt/long sleeved top and some tracksuit bottoms (never PJs as they are for bed time) but just comfier clothes than school uniform.

When I picked him up friends mum mentioned that DS uniform was dirty because he'd got ketchup down his jumper. She said "no doubt you'll be doing the nightly uniform wash anyway but I just thought I'd let you know."

Obviously I washed his jumper when we got home and tumble dried and ironed for the next day but do people really do a nightly uniform wash???

Ds - in Reception/Y1 washed weekly on general principle, but he just never got his clothes dirty. Now he's Y3 they are washed more.
Dd - trousers and sweatshirt and often polo need washing pretty much every day, and she's wearing out all of ds's old uniform. She can track down yoghurt and mud and glue anywhere!

On school days they rarely change into home clothes unless it's been raining on the way home - usually straight into pyjamas at bedtime or sometimes earlier.

Back when I grew up and we didn't have a washing machine it was clean shirt every 3-4 days, had 2 jumpers and tunics but they would only get proper washes at half term - the rest of the time spots were scrubbed off with a flannel and soap. Even at secondary it was assumed that skirts and blazers were only sent to the dry cleaners at half term and just scrubbed as needed in between.

Clean shirt, tights, underwear every day. Had 2 skirts, jumpers, trousers throughout primary school to get 3 days' wear out of each, mostly. By the time secondary school hit, DS & DD were each looking after their uniform so well (no way could we afford 5 sets!), they mostly wore/wear their skirt/trousers/jumper all week without needing washing. My kids get compliments on how nice they smell, we are not crawling with nits, worms, snotty noses, grubby fingernails or dirty faces thank you very much Wink

I didn't know I had a housekeeping motto, but from reading MN pages on cleaning-type stuff, it appears mine is: "Do as little as you can hygienically and socially get away with!" Nobody's died in my care during over two decades of child-raising, and we hardly ever get tummy bugs or anything. I think there's more to life than endless clothes washing and anti-baccing of surfaces, and I detest water wastage. Each to their own, however... one of the good things about MN is discovering the wide variety of 'acceptable' and 'normal' mumsing practice!

I wash DS uniform every other day. He has two jumpers, two trousers and a few polo shirts (which I wash everyday !!).

AllTheLight · 27/01/2017 13:42

I stick it in the wash when necessary, i.e. obviously marked. This usually means once or twice a week for DS1 and DD, more often for DS2 (age 7).

Mari50 · 27/01/2017 13:46

I purposely bought my DD so many items so that I can do one wash a week (she has 3 skirts, 4 pinafores, 3 cardigans, 2 tank tops, 4 polo shirts, 4 shirts and 10 pairs of tights)
Quite obviously I'm a lazy cow with money to burn.

mmgirish · 27/01/2017 14:15

Clean reception uniform every day in our house too. We live in a hot place so no jumpers or anything. Plus, we were given loads of hand me down uniform from friends when their children moved up to year 1 (different uniform per key stage) so we have loads.

ny20005 · 27/01/2017 14:20

Depends on the child. My ten year old can wear uniform for 2 days without a problem, 8 year old needs full clean uniform daily. I do a midweek wash, not nightly Confused

Googlebabe · 27/01/2017 14:55

He wears fresh uniform every day, regardless if there are stains on it or not. Why wouldn't he? With the conveniences we have nowadays - washing machine, tumble dryer and cheap uniforms, it is simply inexcusable to let your child wear yesterday's clothes, uniform or not.

Oblomov17 · 27/01/2017 16:29

'Goggle'? I wear jeans and jumpers more than once before they are washed. And skirts. Depends if it's next to your skin.
New undies and socks and a shirt each day. But shorts/trousers and jumpers can easily be worn for 2 days at least, or 3.

Occasionallyknownasmum · 27/01/2017 19:12

Dd (5) has 2 cardigans 4 tshirt 3 pinafore and 1 skirt. When she started in September I was doing clean uniform everyday top to toe but soon realised I was making life harder for myself so now I only change it if it's filthy and spot clean with damp cloth if just a mark here or there. Now she has 2 tops per week and cardy normally lasts the week (never wears it in school) and pinafore maybe change it once in the week clean vest and tights every day though.

Beedoo123 · 27/01/2017 19:17

Clean t-shirts and skirt/trousers every day and jumper lasts til it gets dirty... which is not usually very long Grin

JsOtherHalf · 27/01/2017 19:30

At that age DS would have a clean polo shirt every second day. The trousers would usually last 2 or 3 days. Two sweatshirts a week.

Love51 · 27/01/2017 19:38

I think it would help if school didn't encourage kids to use their uniform to scrub the tables, which is the only reason I can think of for dds uniform coming home as mucky as it does. And they don't use washable felt tips. I've soaked her uniform in vanish and all sorts.
I ordered her 2 logoed polos, one white, one red. Then realised that they don't get delivered til 3 weeks in, and got her a 2 pack from m&s in white. Should have got red. It's the only one that didn't look filthy by 1st half term. Future purchases will be red!

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 27/01/2017 19:45

We wash once a week. I'm happy to flannel any food spills if they happen but DH washes them.

Crumbs1 · 27/01/2017 20:02

Depends on age and activities- and item of uniform. Kilted skirts were half termly dry cleaning. Blazers same. Ties same unless dribbled on. Shirts daily. Jumpers usually weekly or bi weekly. Boys trousers more than girls skirts. Prep had shorts and pinafores which were usually bi weekly but shirts and blouses were daily. Summer dresses daily. Comprehensive uniform needed washing more often as a pale grey colour that showed every mark. Blazers were a horrid synthetic material so could go through washer half termly.

Barmymum2112 · 27/01/2017 20:50

Mine has clean every day she is a mucky beggar but only 3 so I can excuse it for now she has 4 sets so try to wash at weekend but sometimes she still wets so wash every other day

BigGrannyPants · 27/01/2017 21:08

My DS wears same trousers and sweatshirt all week and gets a clean polo shirt every day. I'd only wash mid week if he got mega bogging or spilled something like your DS did

Swirlingasong · 27/01/2017 21:33

Goggle, because washing clothes regardless of whether they need them or not is very wasteful of energy and, as others have said, the clothes wear out faster which is also a waste.

IAmNotAWitch · 27/01/2017 21:39

New clean uniform everyday. No chance they could re-wear. Completely filthy. DS1 is also now a teenage and though he showers and wears deodorant his shirts are sweaty and gross by the end of the day.

We are in Oz though so these are shirts and they do a lot of walking/running around/playing football in them.

5moreminutes · 27/01/2017 21:39

I've just remembered that when I was a weekly boarder I didn't even bring my skirts and blazers home at weekends, just "individual" clothes, shirts, jumpers and underwear...

The staggeringly disgusting, staggeringly expensive, weird thick plaid kilt like skirts worn year round must have lasted to be sold on second hand for generations because they were only washed 6 times per year...

bellie710 · 27/01/2017 22:58

All 3 of mine have enough to not wash clothes for the school week but wear clean every day, I always put clean uniform out, sometimes oldest DD (11) will wear the same cardigan but the other two have everything clean every day.

Craigie · 29/01/2017 18:04

No. I have enough shirts for every day, two pairs of shorts, two jumpers. Only a lunatic would wash the uniform every day. Kids put onesies on when they get in from school and mooch about in them for a week before they get washed (unless they get them dirty).

Bauble16 · 29/01/2017 18:10

Clean shirt every day. Jumper, trousers and tie is changed whenever dirty. Usually go through 3 sets ish each a week. As long as your child is wearing clothes that don't smell and are clean, it's fine to re-use. I have messy boys though :)
