To only wash uniform...

Once a week? Confused

DS (reception age) went to a friends after school yesterday. The night before I messaged the mum to ask what she wanted me to send clothes wise. She said she would just keep them in their uniforms as it saves on the washing pile.

Normally when we get in from school DS changes into t-shirt/long sleeved top and some tracksuit bottoms (never PJs as they are for bed time) but just comfier clothes than school uniform.

When I picked him up friends mum mentioned that DS uniform was dirty because he'd got ketchup down his jumper. She said "no doubt you'll be doing the nightly uniform wash anyway but I just thought I'd let you know."

Obviously I washed his jumper when we got home and tumble dried and ironed for the next day but do people really do a nightly uniform wash???

DD showers every night but changes uniform every 2/3 days (unless dirty) . Although reading this has made me consider doing it daily as I never thought about them mixing with the children who aren't washed and possibly getting worms etc. I have a slight worn obsession/ paranoia after DSC had them twice .....
Mind you DD ten now so probably not getting that close to other children . Might change it every day when next one at school age . We have three cardis, three skirts lots and lots of tights and tops. I do at least one load of washing a day , don't like it building up .

HollyBrown · 26/01/2017 16:47

My children have full, clean uniform daily. One has 3 jumpers, one has 4 and the eldest has 5 because he's the nightmare. They all have 5+ trousers and shirts. I have boys who appear to be actual dirt magnets! They also wear PJs when they first get in because comfffffy!

purplefizz26 · 26/01/2017 16:47

I have several white shirts, more than enough for one a day.

1 skirt
1 pinafore

2 cardigans
2 jumpers

Every day a clean shirt, and switch the jumpers, cardigans, skirt and pinafore around for 2-3 days wear before washing.

MotherofA · 26/01/2017 16:48

Oh she changes as soon as gets in after much nagging also to house clothes .

MotherofA · 26/01/2017 16:49

And tights get changed daily with underwear lol sorry for multiples .

BToperator · 26/01/2017 16:52

YANBU OP. I do the same, although it seems we are in a minority. I am fully expecting to have to start doing at least clean shirts daily when DS hits puberty, but for now he is clean enough. He only wears his uniform for a total of 30 hours a week, which doesn't seem excessive to me.

BinkyBuntyFintyCunty · 26/01/2017 16:56

Clean set every day here. I work in a school and when you see the extent of grubby kids (not their fault, I know) who are nose picking, coughing, sneezing, bottom scratching and possibly nit/worm carrying, the first thing you do is get changed and put clothes into laundry pile when you get home. Uniform is so cheap now (£3 for 3 polo shirts in supermarket) that it's not expensive to keep them clean (and thus more likely bug-free!). Even if you don't have five 'sets' of everything, none of it takes long to dry.

Oblomov17 · 26/01/2017 16:56

No mine don't get changed when they get home.
We have 3 x trousers, 3 jumpers, 6 x shirts. Enough for the week.
Thus I don't NEED to wash mid week, but I normally do. Just normal washing cycle with any uniform obviously thrown in.

This thread shows how many different ways of doing it, there actually is!

123bananas · 26/01/2017 17:01

Dd1(7) needs a new polo shirt everyday as she has smelly pits. Trousers/skirt and cardy saved and used for a second day and then washed unless cardy covered in mud or paint.

Dd2 (4) Manages to get something down her everyday so mostly needs a full change although skirts can sometimes do a second day.

Both girls have to take off uniform when they get home.

Ds (3) only does a half day and wears aprons for mucky stuff so his uniform can do three mornings if taken off when he gets home.

soontobemrsmckeown · 26/01/2017 17:16

Everything clean each day. Not messy or dirty but clean each day. 5 of everything for my reception age daughter.

Sweepingchange · 26/01/2017 17:18

Gosh, I'm amazed at all the industrious mothers who provide clean uniform every day! Understandable perhaps for very small children, but for those at secondary school?

My dd has clean white shirts and clean tights and underwear every day. Then two skirts and two jumpers which she wears in the week. The jumpers alone cost Euros 70 each; no way was I buying more than two!

A skirt is just a bit of material that hangs off your waist; so it never really gets dirty as such. And the jumpers never touch her skin so not sure more frequent washing is necessary. Plus she doesn't tend to spill anything much
and the uniform is good quality and doesn't crumple.

Sweepingchange · 26/01/2017 17:20

That wasn't necessarily directed at you soontobe btw! Just a general comment!

LostInLaundry · 26/01/2017 17:27

3 x DSs in primary and secondary here. All have a full set clean (and ironed) every day apart from big DSs blazers and ties which are put on a quick wash and then put straight on hangers and hung over a radiator every weekend. Always been the same since eldest DD (now at Uni) started school, well in fact before then even as DC have always worn clean clothes everyday at home or school, same with pjs. Could never put stale, unfresh clothes on them when they were little and the older ones wouldn't wear yesterday's clothes now anyway when I suggest getting two wears out of jeans, hoodies etc. Hence the username, rod for my own back and all that!

Notso · 26/01/2017 17:40

I am usually washing some items of uniform every night. Three kids in uniform, two jumpers, five shirts/polo shirts, and two pairs of trousers each. I refuse to buy any more than that and have got by with less, I hate uniform and they grow quickly.
I only do a twenty minute wash during the week though then a proper long wash in a Friday.

Sunnysky2016 · 26/01/2017 17:56

Whole clean uniform every day

TinklyLittleLaugh · 26/01/2017 18:12

I do it all on the weekend and we have enough for the week (potentially stinky 10 year old). Five polos, three sweatshirts and three trousers. We have been known to have the odd muddy trousers crises. And quite often the spare (last year's) coat gets pulled off the subs' bench.

MuseumOfCurry · 26/01/2017 19:44

I'm slightly in awe of the people who have a designated washing day. Every day is washing day here, every single day!

MrGrumpy01 · 26/01/2017 19:57

I have enough washing to do without adding in 3 sets of unoliform every day.

Dd10 has a clean t-shirt every day and clean trousers every other day. Cardigan all week.

Ds9 probably every couple of days but he gets filthy so more often if necessary.

DDd2every couple of days. Cardigan usually all week.

I do 2 dark washes a week and one white. (Plus many others)

oblada · 26/01/2017 20:04

No way would I do a nightly wash!!!
2 or 3 polo shirts per week depending how dirty it gets. 1 or 2 dresses (usually 2) per week again depending on how dirty it gets. Cardigan lasts the week. Of course undies/vests get changed daily.
Cannot change into 'house clothes' as goes to after school club anyway!
I do 1 or 2 wash per week (quite a bit washing machine) for our family of 4!

ChocChocPorridge · 26/01/2017 20:06

mine are both primary. First year I only got 2 sweatshirts for DS1.. the next year I got 5 of everything (2 official, 3 sainsburies on the sweatshirts, and 7 polos so I had a couple to keep nice for special occasions).

DS1 is a particularly clumsy child, who has a lot of accidents.

DS2 I could get away with less, but we're in the swing of things now with a routine, so it's easier to get him to strip and bung everything in the wash with his older brother than it would be to evaluate his clothe cleanliness each day.

foxyloxy78 · 26/01/2017 20:12

We have five sets of uniform. DS wears clean every day.

Minty82 · 26/01/2017 20:22

Reception-age DD wears clean uniform every day - she's usually either muddy or covered in paint/glitter when she comes home but even if it's not visibly dirty I'd rather send in her in knowing she's in fresh clothes than suddenly spot yesterday's lunch on her cardi as I'm ushering her in! She's got two pinafores, three shirts and two cardigans. I do a wash every day but I'd be doing that anyway; two-year-old DS needs clean clothes daily, plus DH's shirt and pants, my own clothes, everyone's pj's...if I leave it a day it becomes mountainous!

Astoria7974 · 26/01/2017 20:31

I bought 7 sets of uniforms. One for each day and a couple spare. Kids wear a clean one everyday and it all gets washed weekly.

BikeRunSki · 26/01/2017 20:32

The dc (5 and 8) have 6 shirts, 3 sweatshirts and 4 bottoms each. I rarely have to do a school uniform wash during the week.

Gileswithachainsaw · 26/01/2017 20:41

Ha ha ha yes washing every day here too. Rather do one load a day and take five mins to put it away when it's done in the drier over having to spend all weekend doing several loads.

Washing takes the same.amount of time whether you do it daily or in one day.

Only difference is the massive pile of dry washing you end up with when you leave it all to designated days.
