To only wash uniform...

Once a week? Confused

DS (reception age) went to a friends after school yesterday. The night before I messaged the mum to ask what she wanted me to send clothes wise. She said she would just keep them in their uniforms as it saves on the washing pile.

Normally when we get in from school DS changes into t-shirt/long sleeved top and some tracksuit bottoms (never PJs as they are for bed time) but just comfier clothes than school uniform.

When I picked him up friends mum mentioned that DS uniform was dirty because he'd got ketchup down his jumper. She said "no doubt you'll be doing the nightly uniform wash anyway but I just thought I'd let you know."

Obviously I washed his jumper when we got home and tumble dried and ironed for the next day but do people really do a nightly uniform wash???

DS (10) has clean shirt, shorts and sweatshirt everyday even if it's not visibly dirty. He has 5 full sets of uniform so they get washed and ironed as we go through the week.

mambono5 · 26/01/2017 14:27

I too change their clothes every day, but have enough to last a week.

I don't think that our school uniforms are of a great quality anyway, so would age very quickly if washed every single day. I change any clothes or pyjamas every day anyway, school or no school.

TheLastDrop · 26/01/2017 14:34

God no I have enough to last the week. Mine comes home covered in mud every single day, jackets included (he has 3 which I rotate). Apparently it's because they 'slide tackle' each other at football Hmm. I've even got him cleaning his own shoes (also covered in mud everyday), now I know why they have to change into gym shoes, no outdoor shoes allowed in the school.

CupOfTeaTime · 26/01/2017 14:34

Clean every day

Screwinthetuna · 26/01/2017 14:34

Mine wears clean every day, but says in them until bath time

averythinline · 26/01/2017 14:36

Iron school uniform ! what a thought....ds had 5 trsousers/polos and maybe 3 sweatshirts in primary...
In secondary
3 trousers/5 shirts 2 jumpers (1 lost already other never worn)
shirts on hangers straight out of the machine- M&S non iron slim fit fantastic don't need ironing
neither do the trousers also m&s - still have central crease never ironed

I get when they have the discount off in June/May last all year - would rather pay a bit more and have them last/not need ironing

had Asda trousers before which were great for slim ds but did look shabbier faster - fine for primary though...

He doesnt change after school unless really grubby... no need for all that extra washing- he can if he wants just often doesnt bother....

alltouchedout · 26/01/2017 14:36

Clean shirt (and socks and undies of course) every day, jumper as needed (usually need a change of jumper on Wednesday or Thursday), clean trousers on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
All subject to change if they have made themselves spectacularly messy on any particular day...

Clandestino · 26/01/2017 14:38

DD's pinafore once in two weeks or something (was once a week before). The pullover once in two months or somethings, she always takes it off anyway because she's always too hot (oh, I wish I had her thermoregulation) or when it's dirty. Shirts get worn once or twice. She always changes when at the childminder anyway so doesn't spend her whole day in the uniform.
Tracksuit every week. Socks and tights every day.
Nightly wash? Wouldn't even cross my mind.

Hullabaloo31 · 26/01/2017 14:39

DS (just 5) has 5 pairs of trousers, 5 polo shirts and 3 jumpers. He mostly has fresh every day as he's filthy but I won't chuck clean clothes in the wash! Just have to turn jumpers round midweek with other washing.

When he started school in Sept it was hot so a jumper would do a week as it mostly sat in his bag and shorts would do 2 days, clean shirt every day. Some days he'll get 2 days out of a pair of trousers but their outdoor classroom/playground area is muddy right now so not really a hope! Friends have told me they need a bit less as they go through school Hmm

TheFirstMrsDV · 26/01/2017 14:40

Mine wear clean every day. None of my five kids have ever come home in a uniform clean enough for a second wear.
Their uniforms in primary are comfy enough for lounging in so I don't get them to change after school.
Polo shirts come off if we are having something messy for dinner though.

I put things in the wash as we go. I always have a wash on anyway.
Shirts get soaked on a Friday and hot washed on the saturday. I hate greying polo shirts so I have a bit of a routine to prevent them going mank.

If we didn't have access to a washing machine and lots of water no doubt I would be more careful like my granny was back in the day.
But unless that happens I will continue to make my life that bit easier.

MuseumOfCurry · 26/01/2017 14:45

We have five full sets of uniform. I don't like the idea of my children wearing their uniforms more than once, they're filthy beasts.

roundtable · 26/01/2017 14:48

Clean uniform everyday.

5 of everything except jumpers which I have 3 of. So I wash 2 Tuesday night and Thursday. Keep meaning to buy 2 more so I can just save it for Friday night.

I'm trying to get the habit ingrained before sweaty arm pits occur. Grin

Clandestino · 26/01/2017 14:48

We aren't allowed run of the mill uniform, it has to be bought from a specific shop. The pullover has a school emblem and the pinafore has a tartan pattern which is specific for their school. They cost lots of money so can't really have more of them, they'd cost me fortune, especially with DD growing like weed.

ElphabaTheGreen · 26/01/2017 14:48

averythinline We have the same 'non-iron' M&S shirts and they come out of the dryer looking like they've been scrunched! All shirts and trousers need ironing here or DS1 would look like he's slept in his school uniform.

I wear a work uniform (clean every day due to infection control), with trousers and tunics, so my ironing on a Saturday night is miserable. I am not looking forward to DS2 adding to it next year...

noeffingidea · 26/01/2017 14:48

All of my kids have had to wear complete new sets of uniform every day, at least when they were little.
They always have clean shirts or polo shirts every day, that and clean socks and underwear is the minimum standard of cleanliness in our house.

GarrulousGrimoire · 26/01/2017 14:52

DD1 could wear 1 set a week and be fresh as a daisy.

DD2 if probably need to do a wash and change at break AND lunchtime to keep
That one clean Hmm

They get uniform every other day clean, jumpers three days and I have enough to just do a wash at a weekend.

pishedoff · 26/01/2017 14:52

I normally do a wash on a Wednesday , DS1 (13) has 2 pairs of trousers, 2 jumpers and 3 polo shirts. He normally gets 2 days out of his jumper and trousers but a clean polo everyday .I've recently bought another PE kit as he is part of sports teams at school so it needs replacing daily.

DS1 has 2 trousers, 3 jumpers and several polo shirts, I can normally eek out 2 days with trousers but everything else is filthy 🙄

TheFirstMrsDV · 26/01/2017 14:52

elphaba I have heard that about the non iron m&s shirts!

I am glad mine wear polo shirts.

Have you tried drying yours on the hanger? I do that with shirts and if you give them a proper shake before putting them on a wide plastic hanger you don't always have to iron.

BusyBeez99 · 26/01/2017 14:54

clean uniform Monday and either Wednesday or Thursday if needed. Every day is excessive!

insan1tyscartching · 26/01/2017 14:54

Clean everything every day for dd who is 13, not that she ever gets dirty but I would hate that she didn't have fresh clothes on each morning. She has 4 sets anyway so wash midweek. She has always had clean uniform daily since nursery. She changes into something comfortable when she gets home (sometimes pjs if no plans to go out) and I wash these too.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 26/01/2017 14:56

dc are older now so have things like body odour to contend with if they forget deodorant or have pe. but have always had enough tops for a fresh one each day and usually at least three bottoms.

onemouseplace · 26/01/2017 14:57

Uniform gets washed when it's visibly dirty here - and then anything they are wearing Friday gets washed over the weekend so all fully clean Monday. How much gets washed in the week depends on each child - DD (7) can go a full week without anything needing washing.

I remember a friend at secondary school whose Mum washed her uniform every night. She was the one with the jumper that was massively pulled out of shape and practically see through because it had been washed so much - and I remember thinking that was really odd.

Bubblysqueak · 26/01/2017 14:59

5 full sets here. Can't be bothered to wash nightly and ds is a grub magnet.

ElfingHeck · 26/01/2017 14:59

Clean everything for all 3DC every day.

I think it's a bit yuk to do anything else. Aware I'm in a minority though.

Mind you, I am an ironing slattern, and just hang things up, they don't look creased.

ElphabaTheGreen · 26/01/2017 15:09

Tried that MrsDV. They look slightly worse if anything, so I think my washing machine is the culprit. Wrinkle pixies or somesuch. I shall write a strongly worded letter to the manufacturer if I ever escape from underneath my pile of ironing.
