To only wash uniform...

Once a week? Confused

DS (reception age) went to a friends after school yesterday. The night before I messaged the mum to ask what she wanted me to send clothes wise. She said she would just keep them in their uniforms as it saves on the washing pile.

Normally when we get in from school DS changes into t-shirt/long sleeved top and some tracksuit bottoms (never PJs as they are for bed time) but just comfier clothes than school uniform.

When I picked him up friends mum mentioned that DS uniform was dirty because he'd got ketchup down his jumper. She said "no doubt you'll be doing the nightly uniform wash anyway but I just thought I'd let you know."

Obviously I washed his jumper when we got home and tumble dried and ironed for the next day but do people really do a nightly uniform wash???

Like Clandestino, our uniforms are from a specific shop and quite expensive (standard Irish primary school - parents were asked a few years back if they wanted to change to something generic and the overwhelming answer was no). So DDs both have one pinafore and one cardigan each. Pinafore washed every other week or if dirty. Cardigan every week for DD1 who is getting a bit sweaty sometimes now, as needed for DD2.

It's all helped by them wearing school tracksuits to school on the days they have PE or after school sport, so they don't wear uniform every day. (At the moment it's 2 days tracksuit, 3 days uniform).

Clean shirt/tshirt, vests etc every day.

They also change as soon as they get to childminder.

Clean every day, wash most days. I think kids are like dirty animals with no sense of basic hygiene so at least I can control their clothes.

Pinkponiesrock · 26/01/2017 20:51

I used to get mine to change after school but realistically they never came home from school clean Sad so I just had even more to wash. The result being I was 3 sets of school uniform every night, we have lots of sets!

BlackeyedSusan · 26/01/2017 20:57

was h nightly. it needs it. ds is nicking the school field little by little. other children would nt need their uniform washd daily. I know of many who do not. I sensed a slight wibble form one parent wondering whether they were unreasonable to not wash daily but they are the norm, we are not.

mummyofmoomoos · 26/01/2017 21:02

My dc's must just be right royal muck-tubs :( dd 14, trousers, shirt, jumper washed every night, blazer- perhaps twice a week depending on what shes spilled on it this time/ dragged her sleeves in. Ds, 5, mud encrusted everything washed every night- never yet had a jumper without a mark on it 😂

Zoflorabore · 26/01/2017 21:03

Dd (5) and ds (13) have everything fresh on each day for school, always have done.

Takes no time at all to pop the uniform in the washing machine, I love seeing kids all nice and clean for school, you would be shocked at the amount of children that go to school in dirty uniforms with last nights dinner visible Confused

They each have 4/5 sets of everything and ds blazer gets washed every Friday.

I think a lot of people are just plain lazy to be honest though appreciate some children don't get too dirty and items can be sponged down or spot cleaned.

Disclaimer- I do have severe OCD and this is one area that affects me so that may cloud my judgment somewhat.

Pastaagain78 · 26/01/2017 21:13

Clean everything every day but don't get changes after school.

paxillin · 26/01/2017 21:18

I used to have 5 sets of everything and until about year 2 it was needed. Later, 5 shirts, 3 trousers and 2 jumpers were enough. We only wash on weekends. If we had only one set it would indeed be an almost daily wash.

CerealShopper · 27/01/2017 07:37

Fresh uniform every day, washed in with all the rest of the laundry.

I, too, help out in an infants school and am amazed at how grubby some kids look at the start of the day.

maplepixie · 27/01/2017 08:08

My DS goes through 2 to 3 sets a week. I'm glad he's not the only one who seems to roll in mud and yogurt haha

iamapixiebutnotaniceone · 27/01/2017 08:14

Clean uniform every day unless by some miracle they managed to stay spotless which never happens 😂

SaucyJack · 27/01/2017 08:18

Clean tights and shirts every day. School cardies/skirts/blazers/ties are washed every 2-3 days. Pants and vests are changed Xmas and birthdays.

They have several changes of the cheapo Asda uniform, but I only buy one or two of the school branded odds and soda. I'm another one who'd rather have less stuff and wash it midweek, than face a massive mountain of dirty laundry on a Saturday morning.

Yura · 27/01/2017 08:23

Fresh most days and change trousers after school so double washing :( son has exczema and needs 100%cotton trousers without teflon etc - the knees would go even quicker if we wouldn't change. wash every 2-3 days (big machine)

Leatherboundanddown · 27/01/2017 08:24

Clean set every day and I have 7 sets of everything. Wash it all on Friday/weekend and set out on 5 hangers for the week on a Sunday night.

She has a bad habit of leaving her cardigan at school each day. So annoying yesterday I collected 4 from her peg!

Longdistance · 27/01/2017 08:30

We have enough for the week. It gets washed Saturday/Sunday whichever is convenient. A wash is sldi done midweek (normally the day I'm off work)

My dd's can wear their home clothes, every day, and still have enough left over. Family buy them loads of clothes.

I don't get nightly washes Confused

Itsnottheendoftheworld · 27/01/2017 08:31

Clean set everyday for my 2. Including cardigans and jumpers.

Woolyheads · 27/01/2017 09:09

Clean uniform every day.
Mid-week wash so have enough clean for re-use end of the week.

LaPampa · 27/01/2017 09:38

Clean stuff every day mostly but a polo that's been under a pinafore can be then worn the next day with a skirt. I like to do some washes mid week otherwise the laundry for 4 including a baby is somewhat intrusive at the weekend particularly trying to get it all dry. Prefer to have it hanging drying in kitchen when we are all out during the week.

I'm also trying to set up good habits for later years - changing and washing tights pants vests etc daily. Showering after exercise and so on, even though at 4 it is not strictly necessary.

CripsSandwiches · 27/01/2017 09:46

Wow my DS must be unusually grubby I could count on one hand the number of times his jumper has been clean enough to wear two days in a row (mainly school dinner mess). I don't have a drier so couldn't wash over night - I have enough uniform to last the week but do a wash every other day (once I have a full load).

PeridotPassion · 27/01/2017 10:03

I wash the uniform when they need it. They have two jumpers, two trousers and four polos each and we sometimes manage a whole week with them only wearing the two sets so no washing needed until the weekend.

I tend to find that during the colder months they need clean jumpers and trousers most days but can re-wear the same polo for maybe three days. They're not old enough to sweat and when their jumper's on all day during winter the polo is untouched.

During summer/spring they definitely have a clean polo every day but sometimes take the same jumper back and forth to school (just in case) for a fortnight without washing because it's never worn! Just gets carried to school then left on their peg then carried back out.

LaPampa · 27/01/2017 10:07

Mine won't keep a jumper on winter or not so we've had to compromise on long sleeved tops underneath the polos! The dresses over that then give a bit more body warmth and keep the polos clean too.

Ronnie1234 · 27/01/2017 11:03

Clean cluniform every day enough sets to do once a week weekend wash

InsultingTheAlligator · 27/01/2017 11:09

I have 3 sets of uniform so there is a clean set every day and on Wednesday I wash the lot and dry on radiators, then wash again at weekend.

Works for me.

Incidentally - on the clean hair people were mentioning. Ds has appalling ecxema and our allergist advised washing him every 2 days only with Oilatum. I am very sensitive to child cleanliness, having grown up in a household where people did not give a shit, so I use dry shampoo on his hair every second day when he is not having a bath. I am a major major fan of dry shampoo now!

TheMaddHugger · 27/01/2017 11:19

I now have grown ups, but they had 2 sets each and what was worn was washed and fresh for the day

MTB1003 · 27/01/2017 11:24

We grew up having a freshly cleaned set every day, but then we had maybe 3/4 sets so it was probably done 2 times a week. It's a bit grim i think to use it more than once. Kids run around and sweat, also with eating and playing it does get dirty.
