To only wash uniform...

Once a week? Confused

DS (reception age) went to a friends after school yesterday. The night before I messaged the mum to ask what she wanted me to send clothes wise. She said she would just keep them in their uniforms as it saves on the washing pile.

Normally when we get in from school DS changes into t-shirt/long sleeved top and some tracksuit bottoms (never PJs as they are for bed time) but just comfier clothes than school uniform.

When I picked him up friends mum mentioned that DS uniform was dirty because he'd got ketchup down his jumper. She said "no doubt you'll be doing the nightly uniform wash anyway but I just thought I'd let you know."

Obviously I washed his jumper when we got home and tumble dried and ironed for the next day but do people really do a nightly uniform wash???

Mine had clean shirts daily but everything else was once a week. (Boy and girl) they managed 13 years at school without any major mishaps. There was the odd time when I would have to wash my sons trousers during the week but really not many. He wore shorts all the time until primary 5 anyway.

Only1scoop · 26/01/2017 13:55

Dd comes home filthy most days but have enough to not wash nightly.

phoenixnix · 26/01/2017 13:55

Oh DD is 5 btw

TeenAndTween · 26/01/2017 13:55

YANBU. At primary DDs only had one change a week until y6 when shirts needed more changing. Out of uniform as soon as home from school, not sporty girls so no massive running around playing football at breaks.

BingoBingoBingoBango · 26/01/2017 13:57

Clean uniform (DS is in reception) everyday here. Apart from his jumper if he hasn't worn it.

I have more than one set though so I don't do a nightly wash. Does she only have one set of uniform?

icanteven · 26/01/2017 13:58

8 year old is reasonably clean now, and 5 year old sometimes comes home clean and sometimes looking like she rolled in yoghurt. I decide when I see her whether or not to wash the uniform. Generally twice a week. I pop big child's uniform in with small child's if I'm doing it. Just a 30 min wash and they're dry in less than an hour on the radiator. I don't iron (anything).

dementedpixie · 26/01/2017 14:01

Clean shirts every day for both of mine. Ds gets 2 days out of school shorts and Dd has a fresh skirt each day

WhatInTheWorldIsGoingOn · 26/01/2017 14:01

Monday to Wednesday one set
Thursday, Friday another. Wash on Sunday.

dementedpixie · 26/01/2017 14:02

I do a mid week wash and a weekend wash but they aren't the same clothes each time

Lazybeans50 · 26/01/2017 14:05

Clean everything everyday for DS. DD can sometimes get two days out of a cardigan as she normally takes it off (even in the middle of winter!)

bloodyteenagers · 26/01/2017 14:06

We have more than one set of clothes. I wouldn't wear the same clothes for a week so wouldn't expect my dc's to either. Gets them into good practice for secondary and beyond if they are putting clean clothes on.

champagneplanet · 26/01/2017 14:06

DD6 has two pinafores, four polo tops and one cardigan. I wash everything that has been worn at the weekend, she usually gets through three polos (good to keep one spare).

We have a 30 min cycle on the washing machine for emergencies but she tends to stay quite clean.

Nightly washes are a waste of time and money IMO.

chipsandchilli · 26/01/2017 14:09

Shirts and tights, clean ones daily
Jumpers/skirts a new one every two days
Blazer, gets washed in a quick was on a weekend

They have 5 shirts, 2 jumpers, 2 skirts each so don't have to wash every night, just do them all together and shirts on a Friday in the hot white wash with other stuff out the basket

mumofthemonsters808 · 26/01/2017 14:10

No way could I be doing this, 5 of everything (polo, jumper, pants) for my son which enables me to wash, dry and iron once a week. DD's high school uniform is slightly more expensive but even she has five shirts and four skirts (even though she prefers a certain one which she wears repeatedly). In my eyes its well worth having a lot of uniform, but I'm lucky in that both schools don't require my kids to wear expensive logo items so I can buy their uniforms relatively cheap from the supermarkets.

5moreminutes · 26/01/2017 14:11

We don't have school uniform thankfully but all the kids wear fresh clothes each day.

Service support are you suggesting young kids should wash their hair daily so as to ensure it smells of shampoo each and every morning? Confused

RhodaBorrocks · 26/01/2017 14:12

I have 4 complete uniforms for DS. He generally gets through 2 a week but sometimes 3 pairs of trousers if he falls over etc.

I used to only have 2 sets, but he grows slowly so I sometimes buy a new item in the next size up and don't take the old one out of circulation as he's not grown out of it fully yet. He grows erratically, so his trousers might become too short but the tops in the same age group won't be too small for a few months. I'm not a 'buy new uniform once a year' person.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 26/01/2017 14:14

I have a week's worth of uniform for DS. He used to stay clean at nursery, and in reception, seemed to lose the ability to eat without spraying food everywhere, then slathered his hands all over his jumper to clean them off.

He's a pain at getting dressed, so I tend to do that first in the morning for getting that row over with. He's frequently on a second polo shirt by the time we leave the house.

He was so much cleaner as a toddler Confused

maddiemookins16mum · 26/01/2017 14:14

Blimey, I only changed jumpers, cardigans and pinafore skirts twice/three times a week at most (unless obviously dirty). Clean blouse every day though. I have never washed/changed a full uniform daily. School dresses were changed daily in the summer and often the same cardigan would last a week as barely worn in hot weather.

DemelzaP · 26/01/2017 14:15

DD can wear her cardigan or trousers up to three times before they need washing. Sometimes it's only one day. She has enough polos for the week so I only have to do one lot of white washing a week. I do a couple of dark washes in the week so she only has two cardigans and two pairs of trousers.

AntiGrinch · 26/01/2017 14:16

I don't think she necessarily meant that. I think she meant "please don't think I'm policing you or suggesting that you would send your child to school in dirty clothes." It just came out an odd way.

formerbabe · 26/01/2017 14:18

Everything gets washed each time it's worn. Even if stuff looks clean... Smell it! It's not a body odour smell...More like that institutional cooking smell...I don't know how else to describe it!

monkeysox · 26/01/2017 14:19

Mine have to have clean on most days. Breakfast club and after school club and collect them 5 or 6. No point changing for an hour or two.
We have 5 sets of uniform as don't always have time to wash during the week when at work.

Dagnabit · 26/01/2017 14:20

No particular routine here...all uniform is subject to smell and visual checks...things that pass are worn again, otherwise it's chucked in the washing pile. When I have enough clothes for a dark or light load, the washer is put on. Ds (5) gets through more than dd (7) because he's easily distracted during lunch and likes to play in the dirt. Dd did go through a phase of playing 'mums and dads' and having to scrabble on her knees as the 'baby' but that's passed now we had words

wfrances · 26/01/2017 14:23

dont do a nightly wash but have enough uniform so they can wear a clean uniform every day .(ds 18 and 13)

tnemailrap · 26/01/2017 14:25

Nightly wash? God no!

We have 5 jumpers, 5 shirts and 5 short. All washed on a Friday.
