To only wash uniform...

Once a week? Confused

DS (reception age) went to a friends after school yesterday. The night before I messaged the mum to ask what she wanted me to send clothes wise. She said she would just keep them in their uniforms as it saves on the washing pile.

Normally when we get in from school DS changes into t-shirt/long sleeved top and some tracksuit bottoms (never PJs as they are for bed time) but just comfier clothes than school uniform.

When I picked him up friends mum mentioned that DS uniform was dirty because he'd got ketchup down his jumper. She said "no doubt you'll be doing the nightly uniform wash anyway but I just thought I'd let you know."

Obviously I washed his jumper when we got home and tumble dried and ironed for the next day but do people really do a nightly uniform wash???

"She said she would just keep them in their uniforms as it saves on the washing pile. "

Eh?

What does what your kid wear have to do with her washing pile??!!

Another time just send a change of clothes if you want to.

I guess if kids have only on set of uniform it might need to be washed every evening?

MrsStinkey · 26/01/2017 15:14

DD1 is 6. Her cardi/sweatshirt will last the full week as she tends not to wear it. Skirts/pinafores 2 days but she has a new shirt/polo t-shirt every day and new tights every day. We have enough of those to last the week. We also have 3 skirts and 1 pinafore just in case!

MrsStinkey · 26/01/2017 15:15

Oh and she wears her uniform after school as well unless we're going somewhere.

MuseumOfCurry · 26/01/2017 15:19

In my experience, Brooks Brothers has the only children's iron-free shirts that actually look like they've been ironed. They are beautiful (but expensive).

The M&S adults men's no-iron shirts are ace, but come only as small as a 14.5 which will fit a big/tall year 9 boy.

HuckleberryGin · 26/01/2017 15:21

How do you have a reception child that stays clean by the end of the day, please share your secret!

TheSmurfsAreHere · 26/01/2017 15:22

No but we have 3 sets of t-shirt, jumper, trousers so they can last the week.
Dont have a tumble drier anyway so there is no way stuff would be dry the next day.

Starlight2345 · 26/01/2017 15:27

I had to change more often in reception..However we go through periods where his trousers are filthy daily. I change tops every couple of days the rest when dirty ..

BarbarianMum · 26/01/2017 15:28

We have 4 sets of uniform - enough so they can have clean everything every day as long I throw together a midweek wash. They don't change after school except for sport. They have never gotten through a whole week at school without needing a change (rarely through a day tbh) and the uniform is cheaper than their non-uniform clothing so I'd rather they messed that up at home too.

Your children must be very clean or wear very expensive uniform Grin

BarbarianMum · 26/01/2017 15:30

OK so for ds1 when in reception: wearing uniform all day = 1 set dirty clothes at bedtime; wearing uniform for school then changing = 2 sets of dirty clothes at bedtime. Simples.

steff13 · 26/01/2017 15:31

When my boys wore uniforms to school, the each had five pairs of pants and five shirts, so I only washed once a week.

diddl · 26/01/2017 15:36

"1 set dirty clothes at bedtime; wearing uniform for school then changing = 2 sets of dirty clothes at bedtime. Simples."

Obviously, but it's up to Op isn't it?

It doesn't affect the mother of the child being visited!

BarbarianMum · 26/01/2017 15:39

No, of course it doesn't. I expect she was only trying to be nice, assuming the Op worked on the same system for clothing that she has. She didn't refuse to allow her son to get changed.

MirandaWest · 26/01/2017 15:41

My two have two skirts/pairs of trousers (DD only likes skirts) and a number of polo shirts. DS has about three sweatshirts and DD two cardigans. Things get washed when needed.

Somedays · 26/01/2017 15:42

Clean shirt every day, then they have 2 pairs of trousers and 2 jumpers each, and I wash at the weekend. We also always have slightly small trousers/jumpers lurking for emergencies! Blazers go in the washer about once a term, and ties a couple of times a term. They have two ties each, but there are days when no one can find one...

The only items I wash during the week are muddy sports kit!

HelenaGWells · 26/01/2017 15:45

I have enough for the week. For DS this is 5 pairs pants and tshirts and 3 jumpers. DD has 5 tshirts, 3 pairs pants and 2 cardigans.

Even with DD at high school I bought enough shirts to last a week and 2 skirts and jumpers.

I do a midweek dark wash of everyone's jumpers, DDs skirt and DDs pants. That gives me enough spare for emergencies towards the end of the week I don't always need them though, it depends if it's forest school week/spaghetti for lunch/art day.

Somedays · 26/01/2017 15:46

And I don't iron school shirts. I buy the non-iron trutex ones from the uniform shop, which don't look too bad, and they're under a jumper anyway, so nothing to see beyond the collar!

HelenaGWells · 26/01/2017 15:48

They have two ties each, but there are days when no one can find one...

DD has a tie and I have a tie. Mine is the emergency one. You can only borrow
It if you can't find yours and it has to be returned at the end of the day. This is my sils system and it works brilliantly (she has 2 fighting over the spare tie though so she has to hope they don't both loose their Own on the same day)

RubyGoat · 26/01/2017 15:48

We have enough to last the week. DD is 4, likes all things messy, & we don't have a tumble dryer...

BastardGoDarkly · 26/01/2017 15:49

Yeah mine don't get changed after school unless they're going to the park (in better weather) or somewhere else. I CBA dealing with 2 sets of clothes a day, then there's the PJ's.

DangerousBeanz · 26/01/2017 15:54

My DD 7 is a proper scruff bag and prize winning muck magnet so it's a clean set everyday for her, I then wash it once a week. However I only buy the cheap generic uniform from the supermarket not the flash embroidered numbers from the school shop. I couldn't afford a clean set of those for everyday

SometimesMyMumComesOutMyMouth · 26/01/2017 16:19

Sorry reading some of the replies it makes it sound like she was responsible for my washing pile, I think when she said it she meant she would keep both boys in their uniform so that we each only had one set of clothes going into the laundry basket.

It also makes me sound like I only have one set of uniform! Grin we don't.

DS usually goes Monday-Wednesday in one jumper and trouser set, Thursday & Friday in another and then has a logo'd jumper for best.

He doesn't get messy enough to warrant a new polo shirt everyday and is often too darn lazy to take his jumper off. So quite often we will make a polo last 2 days. Again he has a logo'd polo for best.

Glad that no one else seems to do a nightly wash and it's not just me! There's more important things... like gin!

I am however envious of those of you who can have 5 sets per child! Would cost me a small fortune to kit mine!

Oh I do washing every day Grin

Uniform goes in with the other stuff I wash.

Kids have clean uniform every day. They run around and get hot in stuffy classrooms sit on grubby floors and mix with the kids who don't have regular clean uniform so it's bath daily and fresh uniform daily. Think.its a bit gross not too tbh but realise I'm. Also I'm the minority here

TheBruteSquad · 26/01/2017 16:37

Clean shirt everyday (but have enough to not need to wash the same one each night). Trousers/jumper etc. get washed weekly or when dirty, whichever comes first. (Have spares of these too).

But DC change when they get home into comfy 'house' clothes. These get washed when dirty. If they were going to a friend's I wouldn't send a change of clothes, I'd just let them play in their uniform for once. So on those days I'd have to put all the uniform in the wash. not the point of the thread

roundtable · 26/01/2017 16:38

I went to Aldi op. Grin

Oly5 · 26/01/2017 16:44

Clean uniform every day for my reception kid
Have lots of everything
