To think Paperchase have lost their minds over cock and anal cards

Paperchase have a series of Valentine's cards with such witty captions as "I love your big cock" and "nothing says I love you like anal".

As a high street chain hugely popular with young people, I'd kind of expect them to understand some boundaries about graphic and sexually explicit language.

They're brazening it out on Twitter, claiming their minuscule disclaimer about the cards being rude is absolutely adequate.

Grim.

Nasty

I actually buy most of cards from there. I'll be having a word with the manager next time I'm in!

SmilingButClueless · 25/01/2017 23:46

To be fair, the big cock one might be mildly amusing if your partner kept chickens.

Otherwise, no. Just no.

Inertia · 25/01/2017 23:48

Sadly , it's becoming increasingly common for people (especially women and girls) to be reduced to body parts in the eyes of others. The most powerful man in the world regards women as 'pussy' to be grabbed, the Daily Fail froths over 15 year old girls in bikinis, women and girls are under ever-increasing pressure to perform sexual acts they're not comfortable with.

I never imagined that Paperchase would be so desperate to align themselves with that level of sexual objectification- they always seemed to be aiming for a classier image than that.

I agree that Valentine's Day is supposed to be romantic, but I have to disagree that sex can't be romantic. I have had more romantic and loving sex than I have ever had demeaning sex as far as I can remember, I'm old now so sex is a dim and distant memory .

These cards are nasty.

Tikky · 26/01/2017 00:07

They are an awful and don't fit in with Paperchase.

WyfOfBathe · 26/01/2017 00:13

I don't know Wyfofbathe - I think explaining a topless magazine cover is actually easier than than trying to explain to a 10 year old why a card about anal sex is meant to be funny...
I see where you're coming from. My DD is only 5 so I suppose the question from her would be "what does anal mean?" rater than anything more in depth, whereas I can imagine her asking tricky questions about why the lady on the magazine is showing her "boobies" or sitting in a funny way.

Grin

Grindelwaldswand · 26/01/2017 00:20

They are disgusting !! Imagine having that conversation with your young children about what those words mean Hmm and it's hardly funny or romantic these seem more suited for anne summers not a family store

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 26/01/2017 00:21

I'm sorry, but there is no humour there at all - they aren't witty or clever. They are just statements. I just don't find them funny at all

They are not in the least bit funny.

I'm sure there are lots of Radio 4 listeners here who know that what Samantha gets up to I'm sorry I haven't a Clue is very dirty and very funny. These are the equivalent of scribbles on toilet walls.

Araminta99 · 26/01/2017 00:25

Disgusting!

5BlueHydrangea · 26/01/2017 00:32

They are revolting and wrong. Can't think of anything remotely positive to say about them. Makes me almost pleased about the time dd wet herself (she was 3) all over the floor in Paperchase!

And no, I love some of their stuff but it certainly wouldn't count as cheap in my book, especially with the likes of Poundland on every corner!

slightlyglitterbrained · 26/01/2017 00:37

TBH, it's not even so much that trying to explain that vocabulary to my four year old would be tricky. It's that I don't want him growing up thinking that sex is so grim.

They're pretty fucking joyless for so called "funny" cards. My god, imagine getting one of those as an anonymous Valentine?

SignOnTheWindow · 26/01/2017 00:39

Grim. And I've had words published in the Profanisaurus.

IamPoopyHead · 26/01/2017 00:47

Tacky! The sexual reference cards are not funny at all. Not even mildly amusing. The anal card is ShockHmm And I wouldn't call myself a "prude".
I'm not sure what they're trying to do here to be honest.

TheFilthiestPersonAlive · 26/01/2017 00:56

Gosh, who says romance is dead, eh?!

LoveforPGTipsMonkey · 26/01/2017 00:59

*I'm not sure what they're trying to do here to be honest.(

They are trying to be 'cool' - who the heck did they appoint as the designer? a 16yr old boy with a porn habit? no design skills there and no wit, just salivating.

LoveforPGTipsMonkey · 26/01/2017 01:01

even 'hardon' ios speeled in a teenage speak - grim precisely because the range is aimed at older teens! they well know that no grown up with any taste (i.e. their usual customer) will go for these.

LoveforPGTipsMonkey · 26/01/2017 01:01

*is spelled

Sybis · 26/01/2017 01:13

I wouldn't buy the cards, but would have no objection to them if they were being sold in Ann Summers or similar. Quite what they're doing in paper chase...

Zafodbeeblbrox10 · 26/01/2017 06:05

I was shocked on holiday in greece last year, in most of the tourist shops were depictions of ancient Greek men shagging other mens arses! In full view of enquiring young minds.. I may be starting to sound like Mary Whitehouse but I'm sure there should be a line somewhere!

CauliflowerSqueeze · 26/01/2017 06:33

So anyone who thinks the cards are fine, would you be happy for your teen daughter to receive the anal one from her frisky boyfriend then?

Didn't think so. But there's no minimum age, so anyone who can reach it can buy it.

elodie2000 · 26/01/2017 06:45

I'd love to see who they have employed as their buying & marketing team this year!

Natsku · 26/01/2017 06:50

They're just not funny, there's no attempt at a joke, no subtlety and I agree that the analysis one gives out a nasty message that women ought to do something they might not want to do in order to prove they love their partner, can certainly imagine teen girls getting that impression.

I'm all for rude cards but they should be subtle and funny, otherwise its like being back in secondary school.

heron98 · 26/01/2017 07:00

Not funny but then again I don't think it's the end of the world if a kid sees one on a shelf. There are more adults in the world than kids and the world doesn't need to be completely sanitised for them.

TheBogQueen · 26/01/2017 07:04

I'll just take the kids elsewhere to spend pocket money.

honestly it's just so
Crass and unnecessary
