I can see the MP voting to stay in.

the people have voted and the people wants to leave the EU

People voted to leave the EU I'm not sure they all knew exactly what they were voting for. I wish Labour, Greens, the SDP, the Lib Dems etc would form a progressive alliance and offer us a vote to get out of this kamikaze tail spin.

travailtotravel · 24/01/2017 10:17

It's unlikely they'll vote to stay. What it will probably mean is a more measured (soft) Brexit. Which is probably best for us, and certainly best for our economy - I can't see Donald offering us very much except badly farmed meat and some GM food that's going cheap.

Seqkat · 24/01/2017 10:17

There is (or should be) a difference between democracy and mob rule which is really not acknowledged well enough in a lot of these discussions. One of the major parts of that difference is a legal framework which prevents a majority from just doing whatever they like - i.e. constitutionally speaking, it should not be possible in a democracy for a majority to just vote to have everyone they don't like murdered. The legal framework (itself ideally democratically formed, as ours is, via the passing of laws) intercedes at that point, thank goodness!

In the Ancient world, when they were inventing democracy, they were enormously aware of the importance of this difference - somehow we've now lost sight of it and how important it is.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 24/01/2017 10:18

I can see the MP voting to stay in.

I can't.

They will vote to trigger article 50.

There will be arguements further down the line about any deal though.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 24/01/2017 10:18

If we remain in the EU now they will forever take the piss out of us.

Massively.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 24/01/2017 10:19

I am pleased about the result

it wont change us leaving few mp's will vote against the government but it does allow greater scope for all to be involved in us leaving

ExplodedCloud · 24/01/2017 10:19

The government could appeal the ruling at the European Union courts...

I almost wish they would for the sheer irony.

YokoUhOh · 24/01/2017 10:20

It's not bullshit, it's called parliamentary democracy, I thought that was what Brexiters voted for?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 24/01/2017 10:20

I'm a Leaver, and I see the the fairness in this, if I'm honest. I'd love to crack on with Teresa Mays Brexit, but this is the right way to go about it.

LunaLoveg00d · 24/01/2017 10:21

SNP MPs will voters stay. Scotland did vote by a big margin to stay, but they'll be rubbing their hands in glee at a chance to piss off the government and advance their independence cause

PebbleInTheMoonlight · 24/01/2017 10:21

@EveOnline2016 if you don't understand why this is a good thing then you need to read up on our democracy.

The ruling isn't about overturning the 'will of the people' it's about making sure that we never have a prime minister who makes constitutional changes without parliamentary backing.

If we have to leave a system that's forced better rights for the average person/worker (maternity leave provision for one) then being left left with a system that can't see a prime minister just declaring something will happen without Parliamentary consent is the next best thing.

JennyOnAPlate · 24/01/2017 10:24

We will still brexit but the terms will have to be agreed by Parliament as a whole. It's a good thing.

Sixisthemagicnumber · 24/01/2017 10:24

The court is just ensuring that the correct processes are followed. The rules say that the MPs should have the vote on triggering article 50 and that rule shouldn't just be overlooked. If we start overlooking parliamentary rules where does it end?
I can't see that brexit will be halted but I am glad to see that the prime minister isn't being allowed To overlook procedure.

PenguinRoar · 24/01/2017 10:24

How is this process bullshit?

It is the right and proper legal process to ensure consultation, understanding and implications of leaving the EU.

It ensures that our elected officials follow the legal processes required of their role and authority and that the yes or no options presented in the referendum are turned into clear, agreed plans.

May was proposing she alone could make the application and that the shape of the exit was her decision. That was not what anyone voted for. It is a parliamentary process and a democratic one which should garner the comments, input and agreements of our elected officials.

EssentialHummus · 24/01/2017 10:25

What yoko said.

You lot campaigned for Brexit because you wanted parliamentary sovereignty. This is parliamentary sovereignty in action.

Imamouseduh · 24/01/2017 10:25

YABU. It's called democracy.

TheNaze73 · 24/01/2017 10:26

What a narrow minded post

travailtotravel · 24/01/2017 10:27

Whichever poster above thinks it is an EU directive on how brown your roastie s should be - please point me to that EU Directive. I think you will find it hard. It is the UK government via the good Standards Agency who have issued this guidance.

This is exactly why we are in this situation. It's like #alternativefacts or something.

Madmog · 24/01/2017 10:28

As I understand it we'll still be leaving. I suppose things have to be done properly and I want Article 50 implemented as soon the government feel the time is right. Whether you voted to leave or not, it's going to happen, so I think it's best to get on with it, deal with the uncertainty and hopefully things will settle down.

Bushymuffmum · 24/01/2017 10:29

Well, I didn't vote to lose my rights as a European citizen actually. Why should the turkeys Leavers dictate that I Should.

Erm...because they were in the majority. That's how democracy works isn't it? You have a vote and the majority wins? Or should it be changed to we have a vote and the minority wins?

icanteven · 24/01/2017 10:29

Itisnoteasybeingdifferent

Meanwhile the EU has issued a directive on how brown a roast potato is allowed to be.

As this is patently not true, I'm calling you out for the exact sort of bullshit that caused this rift in the first place.

Please show me the EU directive that dictates the shade of roast potatoes, and explain to me your understanding of what acrylamide is, where it comes from and the risks associated with it.

#alternativefacts

Mummyoflittledragon · 24/01/2017 10:29

MilkTwoSugars

If we leave the EU now they will forever take the piss out of us.

Massively.

Unfortunately we are damned if we do damned if we don't.

We are leaving. Sadly.

icanteven · 24/01/2017 10:29

travailtotravel Cross post - sorry!

Olympiathequeen · 24/01/2017 10:31

Unless MPs vote against the will of their electors it makes a farce of democracy.

No matter what the personal views of the MPs I don't see how they can defy the will of the people. Think it's just a minor hiccup.

LucyCallaghan · 24/01/2017 10:31

Agree travailtotravel, it's bloody ridiculous. In any case, I'd rather have a slightly less burnt roast potato than the chlorine washed chicken we will end up with when we go begging to Donald Trump and slash all our H&S regulations so businesses will take advantage of us post Brexit.
